An awesome project! USB-C on an iPhone would help speed up its adoption which is good for consumers, the environment & innovation in the tech industry.
Except for all the Lightning accessories which will get thrown away... all that trash. I want USB-C too, but don' think moving to it will reduce e-waste (only in the long term).
I can see an Ifixit style replacement ribbon for older model iphones with usb-c being a real seller. older iphones have great screens and cameras that hold up quite well against even 2021 budget phones so would be lovely to see them kept arround for another few years!
@@eavedrops oh yes, I don't think we will ever see this in mass production. perhaps for DIY hobbyists with heat guns, patients ,and skill. JLB pcb do really affordable ribbon cables now so i wouldnt be surprised to see a a few schematics for this type of device
Good job, I hope you're able to miniaturize your circuit. It would be amazing if third parties started selling flex cables with USB C already swapped in instead of lightning, and then you'd just need a custom chassis.
Thank you. This is definitely something I'm aiming for. I will make it all open-source once it is completed and maybe someone will make a commercial version like you mentioned!
A fun idea I got from this. Fill the charging port with dust or something. Take it to a repair shop and say it does not charge and record their reaction 🤣
True but you need access to an x-ray machine, which I don't have. There is simpler ways to reverse engineer small circuits ;) Thanks for dropping the idea tho

I actually use an android phone as my daily driver. The main barrier to me owning an iPhone is the lack of USB-C. This is super high quality work, very interested in seeing the next video. This would be prohibitively expensive I’m sure, but would it have been possible to salvage the charging port module from a usb c iPad and work that into the iPhone?
Great question thank you. I thought about this when I first started the project but decided not to choose this path for two reasons. 1. The parts were just not available easily at the time 2. I don't believe it would actually have helped in this case as the operating system on the iPad is most likely capable of using the USB protocol natively whereas the iPhone uses the Lightning protocol. This would have probably required a software mod that completely changes the scope of the project. Here we reverse engineer the circuit on the C94 board to do the Lightning - USB conversion for us without having to study it in detail.

@@BlakeTedKord Because it's faster than AirDrop and more convenient than a cable. Plus, plenty of people use micro SD cards to expand their phone's storage and not necessarily to make file transfers to other devices.
