  • In this video I test out the Sima GoDVD! CT-100 Video duplication enhancer with VHS and DVD sources recorded to a Panasonic DMR-ES15 DVD Recorder. I try doing direct dubs via composite video without the Sima and with the Sima and see if DVDs of copy protected content can be recorded on this device. I also investigate what the GoDVD! does to the video blanking interval (VBI) with content encoded with Macrovision, including Closed Captioning information.
    I have an entire playlist dedicated to devices used for this purpose.

    Enjoyed this episode. About a year ago I needed to transfer some footage and could've used such a device. Thanks for the reviews!

    Learned a lot from this video. I keep telling my cable company they cannot upgrade my cable box because I need the s-video out so I can archive my favorite content from my dvr to dvd. Thank You

    These processors only affect the Y (luma) component of the video signal -- the C (chroma) information is unaffected. So with some wiring adaptation, you could use it with S-Video by looping the Y signal through the Sima unit while providing a direct connection to the C signal. You could even use it to remove MacroVision from 480i component video by feeding the Y connection through it while directly connecting the Pb and Pr jacks.

      Excellent point. I own two S-Video breakout cables that I've used with my old RXII stabilizer to separate luma from chroma. It was demonstrated on the 2nd vid I published on this channel back in 2018.

      Using old stabilizers with the Y connection on a YPbPr signal is a good idea for a video! Thank you for your input @VWestlife.

    Informative video. Any chance you can come across the Sima SCC2 for testing as well? And then there's the Grex 7.4 which you've mentioned some time ago......

    • @ThriftyAV
      @ThriftyAV  2 года назад +1

      I watched a SCC2 on Ebay a few months ago, but it bid up too high for me to justify the purchase just for a vid. I've reached out to Grex twice about reviewing their product with no luck. Maybe the 3rd time will be the charm.

    • @vampyrelycan99

      @@ThriftyAV With Grex I doubt it. After all, its entire product lineup is on copyhuard defeaters and I don't know how the current state of DMCA would have an effect on them. So if Grex (or whatever parent company it's called) decides to lay low (profile) I can understand that. But what about dealing with product warranties for existing customers, should they experience problems with their units? That I have no idea, although, I'd be interested in getting one some day even at premium pricing (around $105-110 on eB).

    I am gonna buy a Grex, as that will allow copying of protected content from cable TV as well as allowing the copying of protected content on DVD and VHS tapes that we all know as Macrovision. The Sima GoDVD seems cool if someone just wants to copy from tapes and DVD's, but if you wanna copy protected content recorded from cable TV AND also copy from tapes and DVD's that have Macrovision protection, the Grex is the way to go!

    What I have is a Panasonic DMR-E75V built in VHS and DVD player/recorder. Years ago when my now 42 year old son was playing baseball as a 12 year old I bought 3 baseball hitting instruction tapes. Well now my 10 year old grandson is in need of instruction after 3 days of searching found the VHS tapes and thought I could use my Panasonic DMR-E75V combo to make DVD copies. The DMR works for transferring all the home recordings I made but because of Macrovison I get the Recording not allowed on the instructional VHS tapes. Is there a way to circumvent the Macrovision in this all in one VHS to DVD recorder?

    Supposedly a "video stabilizer" that only has composite connectors can be used with S-Video by making a cable that separates the chroma and luminance connections. Run chroma straight through and pass luminance through the stabilizer.

    Hi ThriftyAV, I recently bought some CDs at my local Barnes & Noble (Fleetwood Mac's Rumours and Toto IV), and the cover art showed that they were the original editions from the 1980s, complete with the original catalog numbers, but they were actually newer pressings (one with an updated Warner Records logo). I was wondering if you could do a comparison with some of these newer CDs to see how different they are from their older counterparts.

    • @ThriftyAV
      @ThriftyAV  2 года назад +1

      Mitchell. I actually have a video in the planning stages where I compare multiple masterings of the same title. I've been holding out because I wanted to include a vinyl version in the mix, but I haven't aquired it yet. I could make the video NOW if I limit it to CD versions. I will think about it.

    • @MitchellHang
      @MitchellHang 2 года назад

      @@ThriftyAV I am not necessarily talking about remasters. The new CDs have the same catalog number as their originals from the 1980s, but they appear to have updated matrices with nearly identical surface designs. I ripped the CDs and they sound fine to me, so I speculated they are repressed original CD editions.

      Are you including hi-res digital versions of the albums in that comparison? Qobuz has Toto IV and Fleetwood Mac's Rumours in 24-bit 192khz.

      @@MitchellHang Bit accuracy can be tested using Audacity as a tool. I did that in a vid comparing a BMG club title to a studio release.

    • @ThriftyAV
      @ThriftyAV  2 года назад

      @@Code7Unltd I haven't messed with hi-res files because stand-alone high-res playback devices cost more than my stereo receiver. Yes, I have software that will play these files, but the built-in audio on my computer would not do them justice.
      I have a Pioneer DVD player capable of playing Super Audio CDs, the old physical media high resolution format, but I don't have many titles in that format.

    I'm considering whether to buy CT-2 or CT-200, I'm in PAL regions. In the video you says that you had "problems" with them, or one of them, could you explain better what you mean? Also, could you help me in choice the best protection remover for VHS era? if it's good for the DVD era so much the better, but it's not strictly necessary. Please help me. Thanks!

  • @nsputnik

    When you say the CT200 was a dud do you mean it would not power up or something or do you mean it did not actually remove Macrovison?
