  • I test a Clearline Concepts VC-1 and a new old stock VTI VC-3 with a Disney movie encoded with Macrovision Copyguard. I also try the RXII stabilizer for comparison. I demonstrate how a Samsung DVD-R155, Panasonic DMR-ES15, Philips DVDR-3576, and a Polaroid DMR-2001G respond to a video signal encoded with Macrovision. The playback machine is a JVC Super VHS Deck HR-55900U.
    In this video, I reference an earlier video covering Macrovision and Video Stabilizers. This video can be found HERE:

    I just purchased a Stabilizer, a Sima so I will try to see if that makes transfer copies better at least to begin with! Things I've noticed is that old VHS from the 80s do not have Macrovision on them as well as Rugrats VHS made in the 90s copy with no issues due to no macrovision. Newer ones detect that signal. Typically Paramount VHS releases have it.

    I still have my Sony 8mm home VCR (sans tuner), and it always ignored macrovision. Same as the SuperBeta machine I had but lost many moves ago. This has a lot of good information in it, thanks Will.

      I guess that Sony secretly hated Macrovision.

    I got a lot of use out of that VC-1 in the early to mid 1990s. It was really best suited for VHS to VHS recording. I just threw it away a few years ago, after trying the same thing, with VHS to DVD.

      The VC-1 was a bit of a disappointment for DVD dubs, but yes, for tape to tape duplication it works fine.

    I bought a Grex Video Stabilizer and was not impressed with it's abilities to remove the Macrovision Copyguard! I tried to record Jurassic Park from VHS to my Toshiba DVD recorder. It allowed me to record it but was less than acceptable video gain issues. Lots of bright flashing, especially during bright scenes. Also notice some desegregation in quality. I am going to try an RX-2. Thanks

      Thanks for letting me know. I haven't been willing to pay the asking price for a Grex. I've had the best luck with the RXII among the stabilizers I have tried.

    There was a Sima CT-2 Digital Video Enhancer and Duplicator .. sold HUNDREDS in 2003-2009... somewhere in between they were sued by Macrovision and had to discontinue the product. I guess it was that good!?

    • @ThriftyAV

      I've been trying to acquire the Sima CT-2 or the Sima CT-2000 for several years now. According to reviews, it is quite good at dealing with copy protection! I found one about a year ago, but it was faulty. Once I get one at a reasonable price, I will definitely be doing a video about it. Thanks for the comments.

    Question. Are all of these stabilizers compatible with PAL VCRs ?

    • @ThriftyAV
      @ThriftyAV  4 года назад +1

      Unfortunately I have not acquired a PAL VCR or DVD recorder (yet). Once I acquire one I will certainly test all my stabilizers with it.
      None of the products in this video mention PAL compatibility on the box/literature. I know the "Sima DVD It!" has a PAL/NTSC switch on the unit. The Xdimax website says that their "Grex" product is PAL compatible.

    What would happen if you started recording a NON macrovision signal on the DVD recorder and while it's recording, switch to a macrovision video signal, like by either unplugging or using a switcher box?

    • @ThriftyAV
      @ThriftyAV  5 лет назад

      I've tried this with my Panasonic, Phillips, and Samsung using a passive switcher. All three of these units stop the recording as soon as they detect the Macrovision signal.

    Canopus models for your next review? I would also like to see how one can use a TBC to achieve the same goal you achieved with the RX II. Are there any VHS decks that output a clean signal so that a stabilizer box is not needed?

    • @ThriftyAV
      @ThriftyAV  4 года назад

      At one TV station where I worked, we had a professional Panasonic SVHS that I believe had a built in TBC. This would likely achieve the same goal. However, I never tried to dub any Macrovision encoded tapes when I worked there. I'm always on the lookout for video stabilizers at an affordable price. If I find a Canopus, I will certainly review it.

    Hi, thanks for reviewing the protection removers. Can you review Copymaster CM102 (made in Germany) please if you can find this one? (it is quite rare). Also you need to have PAL VHS tapes to view these I guess ? An interesting note about Mulan the Disney movie: The asian Mulan in Chinese/Cantonese sounds best, with the chinese actors voiceovers. (especially the songs!). Thanks for the information you gave me! It saves me ton of money and time to get a workaround these copy protection guards (not "gaurd" > as your description says it). I think also all your DVD recorders are fairly nasty ones. Why? Because they cannot do an all region hack with the dvd's. But if they do: let me know in one of your videos.

    • @ThriftyAV
      @ThriftyAV  6 лет назад

      I will add the CM102 to my list of gear to look for. I have one monitor that is switchable between NTSC and PAL, but that is the only piece of gear I own that is PAL capable, which is why my vids have been NTSC specific.
      The DVD recorders I have acquired have one thing in common, I found them for a bargain, so I couldn't really be picky about features such as region-free hack compatibility.
      Thank you for the spelling correction. I updated the description but then added my misspelling as a keyword. If I spelled it wrong, so might someone else!

    • @ThriftyAV

      Any video encoded with Macrovision will bring up this warning if no filter is applied to the signal. I have a few videos, including this one, where I test out different filters with different recorders. Usage of copyrighted content to demonstrate how certain hardware works falls under "fair use" under Section 107 of the Copyright Act of 1976.

    There was a video stabilizer called "The Corrector II" manufactured by a company called Search Technology, Inc. from approximately 1989-1992. This stabilizer was said to reconstruct and/or restore the vertical blanking interval to original NTSC specifications and remove all unwanted signals totally. It was an AC powered unit that ran on a software program making it upgradable to handle changes in the Macrovision system. It was advertised as being effective on all forms of copy protection: "past, present, and future." If you can find one, that would be a good one to test out.

      @@vietnamintlvideo422 I've successfully used an RXII to remove Macrovision from NTSC signals on VHS tapes when recording to Panasonic, Polaroid, Philips, and Samsung DVD recording devices. Later forms of copy protection on optical discs (DVD, Blu-Ray) and streaming yield mixed results. Sometimes the RXII works, sometimes it does not work. I have NOT tested an RXII on PAL or SECAM video signals.
      If you are transferring NTSC video from VHS tape, the RXII should remove the signal bursts caused by Macrovision. If it does not, I would check the battery on the unit. If the battery is working, but it RXII does not work, you may have acquired a defective device. This is 25+ year old technology.
