Also a lefty, I learned to use an adapted tripod grasp where my pen is between my pointer finger and index and then keep my hand below the pen tip.
This keeps my hand from being on any rings or coils and also keeps me from smudging the ink when using pens that don't dry quickly :)

Hello my friend! I have found this "hack" super useful while using my Everbook! writing on the ruff side of the cover for about a almost a week now and can not understand how I didn't came up with that earlier... Great Idea which works flawlessly with my loose leaf system!

I've been using this method to write while I'm out in the "field". I cut my leather into a sort of dashboard and punched holes in the leather so I can just slip the leather in with my inserts. I like top tabs so I cut a tab into the leather and I use it as a page marker.

Hold paper still with other hand; even with a bound book, I have always done this..
Or use a paper clip; more portable than your coat hanger...
    Write in landscape.
Use smaller holes (I find the 5.5mm standard punch far too big)

All good tips. I may discuss these ideas in a future podcast.

I like the idea of keeping the leather on the rings for this purpose too. I would put a slit in the wholes so I can easily pull the leather out and move it. Love this idea

Love the ideas in the comments. I think as a right hander I instinctively place the thumb of my left hand on the paper between the rings. I'll have to check that...

For me the rings getting in the way has never really been a problem, but your hand not resting on your inserts once you've gone past the middle certainly has. Whenever I get past the middle, I take out the paper and move it so that the upper rings go through the bottom holes on the page. Then when I'm done writing I move the paper down to its normal position again.

      Many thanks for your feedback.
I’m going to chat about this in a future members’ only “coffee break”.

Neil, great idea - as I don't suffer from rings getting in the way but do see the lower page 'waggle'.

Maybe it's exercise books at school: if you don't hold them still they won't stay still!

I slit hole in the paper, so I easily can take the paper out and back again without opening the rings all the time. But the smaller rings the easier it is I guess. But plotter size rings is the only size that is no issue I think.

If we imagine that our Filofax is like a portable filing cabinet we wouldn’t try and write on a file without removing it.
I use Personal size and am right-handed so the left pages are problematic. It is best to remove pages to write on them.

I love your filing cabinet analogy.

Hi, have you tried using the pages in your binders in ‘landscape format’ in situ? I have a Wuzhi A7 (pocket sized) and have done a quick experiment and the rings are somewhat noticeable/obtrusive. I do notice them near the bottom of the 'top page' but on the plus side it does feel like I have room for my larger handwriting. The pages felt reasonably stable and there was a 'sense of space'.
It is similar to the A6 Leuchtturm pocket bullet journal which is designed for landscape format use to offer the user an A5 spread should they wish to use it. Interested in your thoughts. Thanks

I often take the pages out to write on them, especially when designing templates. I love an A5 filofax for my diary and my budget book but I find by the time I have a year's pages and some information I carry over from year to year that removing pages becomes a problem. Especially at the beginning and end of the year, you have so much paper on one side of the ring it often slips off and you have to move paper over to the other half of the ring to close it. Are you able to get binders with larger size rings so this would not be such a problem?

A good point. Yes, there are binders with larger rings, but I also recommend considering using a second, or even a third binder.
