    THIS EPISODE
    NOTE: This episode was filmed before the September wild fires started in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. Our thoughts and prayers are with the more than 2000 firefighters who have been battling the blaze. ❤️
    This week we continue to show you one of the top 5 places we think you NEED to see in North America - BIG TREES! If you missed Part 1 from last week, be sure to check that out before watching this one:
    • WHY IS NOBODY TALKING ...
    After our incredible and unexpected sunrise at the top of Moro Rock and getting to have Tunnel Log all to ourselves, we headed to see General Sherman which is the biggest tree in the world by volume! The base of General Sherman is the same length as our RV! 😳 Really puts it into perspective!
    We hiked Congress Trail to see the big trees in that grove and to walk through some of the amazing stands of big trees all clumped together, which is Lily’s favorite part. Our little detour onto another trail led us to an amazing surprise!
    After a drive out to Kings Canyon National Park, we got our sign photo shot and headed back down the mountain where we could actually see everything in daylight!
    We hiked 8 miles and were in the park for 10 hours and felt like we had truly experienced Sequoia, so we had a great night sleep and headed out!
    Stay tuned for the next episode where we head to the California coast and begin our drive up the 1! Be sure to like and subscribe and click on the bell icon for notifications when we release new videos!

    Would you rather do Part 1 - sunrise and donuts after climbing the 350+ steps of Moro Rock and drive your car through Tunnel Log or Part 2 - hike through the Sequoias and see some bears?🤔

      Impossible to decide. I’ll have to do both. Take heart in what you learned and how sequoias survive fire. Controlled burns I’d think helped. I’d also think California would have a huge budget for forestry to help reduce risks of forest fires but I’m not educated in how it all works. Still sad. Love your videos so much. Thank you.

    There is a section of road into Kings Canyon I would highly recommend. So unique and scenic. We also enjoyed a short hike to a waterfall (cascade) in Kings Canyon. Don't pass these little parks, they will surprise you.

    • @FindingOurSomeday
      @FindingOurSomeday  3 года назад

      Kings Canyon is definitely still on our list. We just didn't have time to add it into the day that we had already spent hiking in Sequoia. And we had been up since 4am to get to watch sunrise at the top of Moro Rock. Next time! 😃

    • @natlovell122
      @natlovell122 3 года назад +2

      The drive into Kings Canyon is by far my favorite stretch of road! Once you're down in King's Canyon it's like your own little world. Grizzly Falls, Roaring River Falls, Knapps Cabin, Zumwalt Meadow, and Muir Rock at Road's End are all places there that are amazing. But being anywhere in that canyon is extremely special. Just went last Saturday for the 7th or 8th time this year and the fall colors were beautiful. Maybe saw 20-25 other cars the whole day! I have sent so many people on that drive who think that Kings Canyon National Park is just the General Grant area and Hume Lake and have no idea about going into the actual canyon. I encourage everyone to take that trip just once! Also the campgrounds in the Cedar Grove area are awesome! By far my favorite place to camp in the Sierras.

    • @srachui9150
      @srachui9150 2 года назад

      @@natlovell122 Have you been to both parks since the fire? If so, would you still recommend going? We are hoping to go for the first time in March (although I'm concerned it w/still be too cold). Do you think the Cedar Grove area is a good place to base ourselves to see both parks? Thanks!

    • @natlovell122
      @natlovell122 2 года назад +2

      @@srachui9150 I have only been to Kings Canyon since the fire and it was largely untouched. I can't speak of what Sequoia looks like but I believe all the roads are now open. This March should be an absolutely amazing time to visit as we are getting a LOT of snow this year (record-setting in some places) However, keep in mind that if you do come in March the road to get down to Kings Canyon might be closed still due to snow/ice. It usually opens in March or April depending on the snow levels. The Cedar Grove area is definitely a good place to be centrally located to head to both Kings Canyon (the actual Canyon) and the main areas of Sequoia. They're both probably about 45 mins to an hour away from Cedar Grove. I would say Princess Campground might be one of your best bets. It is a cool campground set on a giant meadow. It's fairly close to Cedar Grove (15-20 mins maybe) and its also close to Hume Lake, which is a beautiful little lake there with lots of amenities (pizza, burgers, ice cream, kayaking, paddle boarding etc.) It's a bit farther to get to Sequoia from there but it's a great spot. No matter where you stay there, you will be surrounded by beauty! There are a lot of fun little hikes off the General's Highway as well (which connects KC and Sequoia) Hope this helped, if you have any more questions just ask! I love talking about this stuff as I have been hiking the Sierras for 30 years

    Corey, That place where you stopped where the rock garden is below (I think where you turned around) is technically outside of the NP so my hubby was able to fly his drone! He was so happy. And yes he’s a certified drone pilot and checked for permission to fly. 😊
    I know you had had a long day by that point, but if you drove further you’d be back in Kings Canyon and the road actually ends about 45 minutes further. It’s a long drive but very scenic with river alongside and a waterfall near the end. There’s also an ice cream shack that a lot of people stop at (but we didn’t). 😊

    • @FindingOurSomeday
      @FindingOurSomeday  3 года назад +1

      There is a lot of National Forest land up there were you can fly. Glad he was able to find a good spot! It had been a long day and so much of what is up in Kings Canyon was closed (like the caves) so we called it and headed home. We will be back SOMEDAY! Thanks for watching!

  • @waynesimpson4081

    As you pointed out: Kings Canyon is not meant to be a drive-in NP. It's purpose is as a high Sierra wilderness for hiking and equestrian packing. The roads in are to server as trailheads, not so much as tourist spots.

      It had been a long day of getting up at 4am for sunrise at the top of Moro Rock and then 8 miles of hiking so it was time to head back home, but we definitely want to go back when the caves are open again.

    Hi guys thank you so much for the beautiful footage. If I haven't said it before. You are hands-down the very BEST videographic artist on RUclips. And believe me I watch a lot of videos. I can't thank you enough for all the armchair travel. I haven't been to where you are since the 90s( have pics in albums same photo ops places) and watching your video it was like I was there yesterday. I am so very saddened by the fires that are going on there it's heartbreaking... well kids you guys stay safe. And as always safe and happy travels💗 p.s. hope you don't mind me calling you kids it's not because I'm older than the two of you but you're all like big kids just like me it's the only way to live! My mom used to always say us 6 kids kept her Young!💗💗💗 p.s. Hello to both your beautiful girls. You're very very lucky fortunate girls! By far the very best education money could buy!👍💗 "Land of the Giants" that was a TV show probably before you guys time.. that's exactly how I felt when I was there so very tiny.. lmao

    Wow!!! Your bear encounter was so amazing! Running across a mama bear with her cubs is something I worry about because I know they are so protective but she certainly didn't look aggressive in your video. What a blessing to be able to view their interaction up close. Thanks for bringing these beautiful trees into our living rooms again. It was encouraging to hear your conversation about annual fires and how the Sequoia are able to weather them. You had no idea what would happen weeks after saying that but it was definitely comforting to hear. Safe travels!

      Yes true. They need fires to reproduce, but if the fire is TOO HOT, the tree and cones are destroyed. Problem is so many of the recent fires are INCREDIBLY HOT. This is something that has changed in the last couple decades.

We use only Homer Buckets from Home Depot Because they are Orange, we all love free pails, but the orange ones are so handy, we put one over our jack to shade it from the sun and hang out chains from the handle, can always see where our rig is from a distance. also in an emergency it doubles as a cone, plus all the other uses, we typically have 2-3 of them with us at all times
