FYI this coming from an instructor that teaches engines....you may want to rethink your oil choice. What you were saying about the cam & lifter wear in an engine is correct, but your engine utilizes roller lifters which aren’t as critical with needing the higher amount of zinc/phosphorus as a older style flat tappet camshaft. If you do prefer the higher zinc rating, there’s nothing wrong with the Mobil 1 High Mileage oil...it has a rating of 1000-1100 ppm zinc/ phosphorus which is plenty. The oil that you’re using has a rating of 1200-1300, which isn’t that much more. The other drawback to using what your showing is that it’s a mineral based oil and not a full synthetic oil, which won’t stand up to the higher heat and demand that you’re wanting from your engine. Also, with a full synthetic oil like Mobil 1 along with a good filter like a Wix XP, you can extend your oil drain intervals..it also protects your engine better...take my word for it, been doing it that way for over 20 years now.
A good oil for you would be Amsoil Signature Series 10w30. Or any of the premium synthetics. For your high temps, use 10w30 instead of 5w30. VR1 is a race oil, not meant for street. Race oils are meant for very frequent changes... they have very little if any detergents. Street cars need detergents to prevent sludge build up.
Also it helps if you take your finger and smear oil on your filter gasket. It makes it much easier to take off the next time. And WIX filters are the best for any high performance engine. Great video Kayla.
Totally agree with you, even with a cam I would only use a full synthetic oil, and as you said these newer engines have roller lifters, all that zinc is not needed.
I have seen so many people struggle with getting a jack under their car because it's lowered. Driving up on two by fours and other random blocks of wood they have laying around and usually drive straight over them, they spit out from a heavy foot for the Honda front wheel drive guys or they just push it along never driving on top of the block. About 80% of them also own a set of race ramps but never had the idea to do what you did in this video. Brilliant! First time seeing your channel, whoever is responsible for your wheels deserve a gold star! Design and the color and the fitment are spot on!! My dad was rushing doing an oil change on his cherokee one time and the gasket stuck to the pan. He blew the engine because the 2 gaskets built up so much pressure the filter popped. Good point 👍

You could add or should know that the wiping down and inspection of the oil filter gasket interface before putting the filter on is a really good idea. The most common way to destroy your engine is to not check for any leftover gasket or other material, you will have a leak and it might not show right away even. I have seen two of my buddies engines destroyed this way. What is worse, is both of them took them in and paid for the oil change service rather than DIY.
hi Kayla im danny or d from the big NYC, i love the sound of your exhaust system on the SS sis, it sounds sweet, plus thouse HRE wheels are a clean look, i always like HRE rims, i think their the best $$$ can by, keep up the good work, u got me thinking of a SS now. thanks.
For those who have a low car and no race ramps, using an old set of brake rotors will do the same thing for getting the car high enough to put a jack under and cost $0 if you keep them when doing a brake job, and they don't take up much room in the garage for storage.
I don't like how your jack stands are holding your car, since the place you choose at the botton is flat and only the tips on both sides of the stands are holding the car up. I use a couple of pieces of rubber, from truck tires that i found on the road, to put in between the jacks and the car, it gives better grip and also avoid any scratch underneath. Be safe and thanks for the video!
Cammed = More fuel, less miles per gallon, more oil…but definitely more smiles per gallon! ❤️ the look and sound of your ‘maro! Great job on doing your own oil changes! 👍🏽
I moved from a house with a 2 post lift in the garage to a house with a low ceiling in the garage. I spent $1,200 on Quick Jacks and I use them every weekend. I can barely get a jack under my V or BMW but the quick jacks are awesome. In case the EPA is watching of course my car has cats! LOL

I always have great oil pressure as well. Whatever works for your individual build is perfect! I’ve always wanted to make a trip to Australia. One day for sure 🥰
hello,!!!just a suggestion!!!!!when changing the oil in your engine, the car must be in a level place and lift only the wheel on the right side so that all the oil is directed to the exit of the crankcase left side to extract the maximum of used oil, hugs from Portugal
Changing the oil is the beginning, next you'll do your own brake job, tune up, water pump, alternator etc etc. Good choice in oil and filter. Good neat job and video too. Give yourself a pat on the back, you deserve it. Cheers.
I’ve already done most of that. Sometimes it’s hard to go back and explain exactly how to change oil. I’ve changed my own cam, springs, Coilovers, headers, axles, brakes, etc
I would recommend looking for leaks AFTER you have started the engine. If your oil filter is not sealing properly, it won't start leaking until you have oil pressure.
Good piece of advice. I recommend ALWAYS checking before you start your car. You never know if someone reached under and loosened your oil filter for fun 😧
@@KaylaRundle The problem with the oil filter is it can be tight, but the gasket didn’t seat properly. I also had a coworker that failed to notice the old gasket was still stuck to the engine. When he installed the new filter it was “double gasketed” and it started leaking as soon as he started the engine.
Great video. One thing i do is, i use an oil drain container that catches and holds the oil from 2/3 oil changes and then just take the container to Autozone and recycle it. That way you don’t have to stand there and try to fill 8 bottles up and try not to get the oil all over the place. It’s much easier. 👍🏻
I just randomly came across your channel, great content! A great thing to help you out with lifting your car, since it is low, is getting a quick jack as well! keep up the good work!
I would use a 6 point socket to prevent rounding the drain plug. Zinc is nonferrous so anything sticking to that magnet is coming from somewhere else. Zinc is being used in your oil as a lubricant.
Yes! I picked up 4 of the vr-1 10w-30 from advance 10 years ago and there api SL like how mobil 1 high mileage was until 2015. It's funny how motorcycle oil went from sj to sl and sm.. they dont need friction modifiers to make it slippery since the oil is shared with the tranny.
I hope my daughter gets into cars like you. We're in AZ as well and I think I've seen your Camaro around town before. I've owned a '78 and an '81 and hope to have another someday but it's cool to see supped up Camaros around town here in AZ!
I agree with “ r “ no zinc in the oil. You have roller lifters not flat tap-it lifters also you need to tighten the oil filter 3/4 turn Not hand tight 1/3 or 1/2 turn. The big question is, How many hours do you get on your hair after running your dirty oily hands through it ? 😀 ⚙️ 🔧 🔨Girly Gear head !! Practice makes perfect
Good that your using jack stands for safety first! Get some of those black mechanic gloves. Old engine oil is toxic and you don't want those toxins getting into your bloodstream. Get some safety glasses to protect your eyes. You don't want any automotive fluid getting into your eyes. Safety shoes also. Even if you drop a wrench or a screwdriver. It can hurt you. There's a product called magic creeper. It can help to move around under the vehicle. Wear old clothes too. Oil is difficult to get out of clothes. Keep up the good work. Your helping other people to learn more about their vehicle and how to do routine maintenance.
Great job if you ever get a chance one day somebody with you before you put the oil filter on and you feel the engine up with the fresh oil give it a quick fire up and shut it off you’ll see the old the leftover dirty oil come out where the oil filter is if you put a new oil filter on without oil in it the first dirty oil from when you start the engine go straight into your new filter just to something I learned over the years to you’re very inspiring and you’re very passionate about your car and it’s in my favourite colour white and the Camaro looks great and you look great too Don
Couple of other comments as an automotive engineer.... Reason why you heat the engine up bit prior to an oil change is...not to get it apart...doesn't matter much, but rather to lower engine oil viscosity for more complete drain of the oil...you get more dirty oil out of the engine when oil is at a higher temp...newbs don't burn yourselves btw. Second point is, belt and suspender redundance of leaving ramps under the wheels is excellent advice. You are right to be anxious about raising the car and crawling under it. Also, for even more safety aka redundancy, you can leave your floor jack extended under one side of the vehicle where you aren't working for another measure of safety. Always safety first as none of this matters without your health. A last point. As a car channel if you want to determine overall engine health...you mentioned zinc content in the oil for greater lubricity....you could have mentioned higher cam lift is helped by more slippery oil because the ramps are steeper, lifter springs are a higher tension and hence greater frriction on every engine revolution...a suggestion is send an oil sample off the one of the famous oil laboratories for analysis....like Blackstone. This will give you peace of mind your engine is in good condition. I am impressed with your love of cars. When I was your age, my Dad was an engineer for Chevrolet and he brought home all the fastest cars of that era. The vast majority of men won't change their own oil. As a car designer, people kill cars more than they just fail as a result of neglect. Frequent oil cjhanges make a huge difference in engine longevity. Good luck
That's so funny but yes that's true it's not as thick, much easier to drain when hot. I've gotten my car pretty hot and have never burned myself luckily! It turns into Glue for the gaskets when cold. Maybe I'm weak who knows haha I might have to send a sample of oil away, that would be interesting. You're lucky you were raised with automotive influence. I am doing this and learning everything by myself and through RUclips comments. So thank you so much for all your knowledge and advice you're willing to share. It will help all of us in the future.
@@KaylaRundle You are terrific and I am a huge fan. I believe your leaning in school is directed toward the art side of car design. Yes, I spent countless hours in design studios trying to create what the stylists wanted, but my background is mechanical engineering and I was the guy responsible for how to make a given shape function at its highest level. Kayla, at the end of the day, its like iterating a math function. Polishing a stone. When is it shiny enough to be satisfied? At some point you have to shoot the engineer and release it for production. :-) Design isn't perfect but over time it improves. What is surprising about you is not only you are a girl really into cars and you are all girl, make no mistake but your Dad in particular isn't as passionate. Love of cars simply seemed to happen for you. My hope is in your young life, you come across someone with a profound understanding about cars to share with you. Good job with the oil change. Here are a few tips for the next time: To remove a stubborn drain plug, smack your ratchet with a rubber mallet. It would be better to hit a 6-point box wrench and not your ratchet but work with what you have. I suggest you wear disposable gloves. The oil absorbed through your skin when removing the filter is not good for your health. Also, wear safety glasses to protect your eyes. I did not see you replace the drain plug crush washer. Was the old one stuck to the oil pan? Finally, I don't think your filter was tight enough. Hand tighten and then use a wrench for another half turn. At the completion of an oil change, let car idle and look for drips. Then turn off engine and wait for oil to settle into the pan and check dipstick. Don't just rely on oil pressure gauge.
IMO, A fumoto style drain valve is much easier and waaay less mess. I've been using one for years. Stick some rare earth magnets on the oil filter to assist with ferrous metal removal from the oil, for extra peace of mind if one chooses.
If using zinc oil makes you feel better then do it, not really necessary with roller lifters, I would stay with what the factory recommended that is how they designed the engine, unless you plan on putting on a power adder the zinc might help with the higher cylinder pressure
Are you running a flat tappet? That's the only reason to consider zinc in oil. If your running hydraulic/roller tappets, zinc is not as important. Nice ride....and sounds great!!
A big hello from Australia Kayla🙃 I just watched your video a 1st for me as I just happened to stumble across your site.. and someone famous once said I'll be back 😉
Purolator "Boss" Oil Filters are better than K&N and Wix, Purolator has a lower Micron Filteration Rating and the Filter Media is a very strong Synthetic Material held in with a Mesh Metal backing, Not cheap paper, But i do agree on Valvoline VR1 Oil is Great Oil!
Kayla, love your beauty and charm....enjoy your vlog as well !!! Please get some Esco jack stands and wheel chocks. Safety glasses would be a good idea also. Too bad you don't live closer....I have a huge garage, 4 post lift and every tool you could think of. Stay safe! Keep making videos....GREAT STUFF.
I do my own oil changes also. Lol I get the anxiety part when first jacking 🤣🤣🤣 So glad I came across your channel! It’s rare people service their own cars, much less a female that’s awesome!
Here in CA they have s.a.f.e recycling centers. They accept up to 15 gallons of oil at one time. I pour my oil basin into a 5 gallon arrowhead bottle. It's a lot easier for me than going to Autozone/Oreilly's every oil change
Hi Kayla, looks like you used your torque wrench to remove your drain plug , I know it’s only 18 lbs/ft but it’s a bad habit, breaker bars are cheap, your car knowledge has really been improving remarkably during the last year
I know it's a bad habit. It's the best size for a tight squeeze and something fast. I was being lazy with my tooling choice. Thanks for the help and support!
I use ROTELLA 15w/40 in my 5gen ZL1, and I change it every 2,500 miles due to using e85. I also use WIX oil filter. The zinc content is 1200 ppm. Good for you on changing your own oil! ✌
That's another great option. There are plenty on the market. This one was recommended to me when I cammed my car so I've stuck with it since. Thank you so much.
To the original poster, I understand that diesel oil contains extra additives that help during the break in period of a fresh build, but the LS platform was not designed to run continuously with 15W40 tolerances. You may never have any problems with your choice of oil, but as a GM factory certified Corvette technician I assure you this very thing was taught to me in school. It leads to premature lifter failure, damage to rings, and premature damages to seals "as if the rear main needed any extra help in failing prior to 100k miles". But the 5W30 is what the LS platform was engineered for. With an aftermarket roller cam you are good for 10W30, but it's not recommended to go any higher. Just find an oil with the additives you need. VR-1 and Amsoil are the only ones that I personally run in my Corvettes, and turbo Silverado. Just a suggestion. You can definitely run whatever you like in your vehicle, but I felt obligated to let you know that Diesel oil was specifically brought up during my training and told it was never to be used for extended periods of time. Have a good day.
you should always use great oil from the best oil stocks like redline or royal purple or the best amsoil. they use additives that quite down the lifters and other parts in the engine.
I suggest Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic. I used it in a Chevrolet Malibu and the 2.4 liter 4 cylinder engine survived well with minimal wear on Cams and other surfaces. It ran 432,000 miles on the original engine. The only reason for car failure is the Automatic Transmission finally failed.
Kayla, I haven't read the comments, however I'd recommend wearing gloves when draining that oil pan. Just to protect your hands.... Great video though!

I have seen two of my buddies engines destroyed this way. What is worse, is both of them took them in and paid for the oil change service rather than DIY.
I remember those days changing oil in the alley behind garage, I'm way to lazy to Do that now, I just take it to the dealer but props to you!!
Great video. The women I know who work on cars always secure their hair as a safety precaution (hat, bun, or ponytail)
Yes this is important when using power tools!
hi Kayla im danny or d from the big NYC, i love the sound of your exhaust system on the SS sis, it sounds sweet, plus thouse HRE wheels are a clean look, i always like HRE rims, i think their the best $$$ can by, keep up the good work, u got me thinking of a SS now. thanks.
For those who have a low car and no race ramps, using an old set of brake rotors will do the same thing for getting the car high enough to put a jack under and cost $0 if you keep them when doing a brake job, and they don't take up much room in the garage for storage.
This is awesome to see working on your own stuff. Sounds so good to.
Beautiful and not afraid to get her hands dirty. AWESOME 😉
Kayla so beautiful to see you do your own work on your car 💯💯💯
Keep up the great grind Kayla 💪. Love to support girls and their cars. Your looking beautiful as awlays. Camaro looking and sounds sick as always 👍❤😍
Thank you so much for your support 🤍🤍
Camaro sick, got covid
Free tip about the oil filter. Wrap a plastic bag around it once it's loose so you don't make a mess.
Awesome. Next time I want to punch a hole in the bottom of it so it can drain out.
@@KaylaRundle that's another good way. Also punching a screwdriver through the side of it, if it ever gets stuck.
Cammed = More fuel, less miles per gallon, more oil…but definitely more smiles per gallon! ❤️ the look and sound of your ‘maro! Great job on doing your own oil changes! 👍🏽
Amsoil signature series, I use it on all my customers it's the best oils
I moved from a house with a 2 post lift in the garage to a house with a low ceiling in the garage. I spent $1,200 on Quick Jacks and I use them every weekend. I can barely get a jack under my V or BMW but the quick jacks are awesome. In case the EPA is watching of course my car has cats! LOL
Thank you so much. I just got a Stock '15 Camaro. It's my first car so seeing your perspective AND letting us newbies know if you're stock use this instead was out of sight 😏
And you're gorgeous 😎 win win scenario
Kayla there's nothing better than being able to do services Yourself. Awesome content 👍💯 Aussie Fan I run Penrite full synthetic with extra Zinc. 10 W 40. Always great oil pressure. I change it every 5000 kims.
I always have great oil pressure as well. Whatever works for your individual build is perfect! I’ve always wanted to make a trip to Australia. One day for sure 🥰
@@KaylaRundle I truly hope that you make it over here Kayla. Have a beautiful day 🌷 I really appreciate you taking the time to answer me 🆒🤟🥰
Beautiful Camaro! Those wheels are perfect!!
Thank you so much!!
Yes !!you are a car person!!,and be proud of that!!!,Nice Job,the" maro" sounds awesome!!
I love all this stuff!! Not stopping any time soon! Thank you
@Kayla Rundle who is the gearhead in your family,?(besides you, lol)
Your Camaro sounds wonderful, and thanks for the thorough oil change. Great work
Thank you! I try my best!
I'm so happy that it's so easy and you can do it yourself. I love my camaro
It's super easy. I love my Camaro too:)
Very very nice she knows a lot about lubrication stuff SuperTech oil still the best oil tho
I made some ramps out of 2x10s. It lifts the car 4.5 inches and works quite well. That would prevent having to use the jack.
Good to see a young woman doing you own oil change nice job beautiful car
I came here for the Oil Change on this Cammed Camaro and Stayed longer to read all the "Thirsty AF Comments" as per Usual they didnt disappoint!!
Not the body count?
One of your best videos so far...please keep them coming .
Thank you Patrick!! More to come 🥰
hello,!!!just a suggestion!!!!!when changing the oil in your engine, the car must be in a level place and lift only the wheel on the right side so that all the oil is directed to the exit of the crankcase left side to extract the maximum of used oil, hugs from Portugal
If you pour the oil with the opening at the top, you can pour it without the air causing the oil to splash back and fourth. Plus it pours quicker.
I use larger Race Ramps so I can change my oil without having to jack up the vehicle. Makes changing my oil much simpler. Highly recommend.
What if car rolls back
Great job on your oil changed and I also learned something new today about the difference kind of oils is there out 💪🏻✌🏻❄️
Glad I could teach something! Thanks for your support!
Great video. One thing i do is, i use an oil drain container that catches and holds the oil from 2/3 oil changes and then just take the container to Autozone and recycle it. That way you don’t have to stand there and try to fill 8 bottles up and try not to get the oil all over the place. It’s much easier. 👍🏻
That would be much easier. For the longest time I didn't even have a drain pan, we'll get there eventually.
Very interesting!
Love Cars & Coffee. I do the Scottsdale ones. I'm with the Porsche group
I’ll most likely be at HighLine next week!
Nice Camaro, nice oil change and absolutely nice you! Thanks 👍
Thank you for the support 🥰
The white looks really clean! Love that car!
If you get jack anxiety, grab some quickjacks. They are a game changer.
Maybe I'm weak who knows haha
I might have to send a sample of oil away, that would be interesting.
Surround yourself with the best and brightest. You are smart and you can learn it all. Further you have the right attitude to learn. Attitude is huge for success in life.
I came here to see if she needed any help washing up after she was done 🙋♂️
what in the only fans is going on here
and why these videos that happen on a chill sunny day with a quite background sound have a special place in my heart
Kayla, you got the street fighter spoilers. They look so good on the camaro. I got one too. 😊😊😊😊😊
Congrats!! I love the Street Fighter Spoiler so much!
WOW!! great job ! first time seeing a woman doing oil changes
Flat tappet on the street is like from the 1960's!
Too bad you don't live closer....I have a huge
garage, 4 post lift and every tool you could think of. Stay safe!
Keep making videos....GREAT STUFF.
I do my own oil changes also. Lol I get the anxiety part when first jacking 🤣🤣🤣 So glad I came across your channel! It’s rare people service their own cars, much less a female that’s awesome!
Car ramps will help out a lot kayla and engine flush.
5th Gen Camero! Super easy to do.
That's why I love this car so much!
Great Job on the Oil Change Kayla 👍‼️
Thank You!
My builder recommended me run that same oil but I run the synthetic version. On my built forged turbo LS3.
Very good oil
I got it recommended as well and have never had a problem with it! So it just be good stuff 👍🏼
@Kayla Rundle yeh! I love your fifth gen!
