    While the original Fatal Fury may not be considered a very good fighting game, but it created one of the most awesome Fighting Game Icon ever - The Lone Wolf Terry Bogard! My favor fighting game legend!

    I could never get in to the original Fatal Furys. I do have part 2 on my Neo Geo though. I also have part 2 on Arcade Card CD for PC Engine. I could get into the Real Bouts. I have one of the Real Bouts on my AES, part 2 I think and I love it. Granted Fatal Fury 3 is pretty awesome as well.

    I must say, i really LOVE your videos! Because i am 36 and can relate to you when i was young, played with my best friend nils, and am best friend even today and we are also talking about video games memories even to this day. I first had a sega master system and played wonder boy and alex kidd. And then i got a Megadrive and played the sonic games. All my friends had NES and SNES, and i were really impressed by the SNES graphics and gameplay. So i bought a N64 and had mario 64(the best game of all time) and then i got the playstation and had crash bandicoot,tekken,kings field,extreme games and twisted metal, if you dont have played extreme games then you have missed out on something great!! Cant wait what news/stories your going to talk about next!

    What makes Happy Console Gamer one of my favorite channels: You take a game that I didn't even hear about when it came out (Fatal Fury), a game that I still have no interest in, and you have me wholly enraptured as you sit there and talk about your memories of the game and what makes it great. It's always great to share in someone's positive feelings about a game.

    Between u and AVGN us older gamers (I'm 35) have two fantastic channels to check out for guys around our age that have a true passion for the golden days of gaming and also have fresh takes on current gen. It's nice to see the non-hipster approach to retro gaming. Ur insight and stories on gaming bliss of the past is very entertaining. It would be cool to see u n James somehow do a show together ....a one time thing. In any case your Arcade Tales with Robman and the skipping school episodes are my two favorites that immediately come to mind. I remember skipping school one day taking my saved up money and walking to KMart to get Legend of Zelda Link to the Past.....I get back and right when I put that sucker in my mom had come home from work to have lunch at home.....needless to say it was 2 weeks later when I finally got to play it. My favorite gaming experience of all time is playing through final fantasy 2 (snes) for the first time and more recently shadow of the Colosus. In any case keep up the great work. Been a huge fan of ur show for a while. Looking forward to more.

    I have many great memories playing Fatal Fury, World Heroes, and Art of Fighting in the early 90s. It's sad there's so few arcade games anymore around here, I really miss those old games from back in the day.

  • @PrimalJayquay

    Yep, one thing that really struck me about Fatal Fury when I first saw it was how HUGE Raiden was. At the time he just looked absolutely massive, like he literally took up about a third of the screen!
    Also, that epic intro that cycled through each of the main characters standing on a cliff with that awesome intro track.

    The first time I played Fatal Fury was at my favourite arcade called "Sports Land" in a town called Portrush. So many happy memories about that place. My mum would give me a fiver on a Friday evening & talk about hours of fun playing Narc, Golden Axe, Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat, Terminator 2, After Burner. Jesus they even had paper boy lol. Thanks Johnny for another fine video and a sweet dose of nostalgia :)

    'Bout the best tribute to Fatal Fury that one can ask for. Out of the whole series, the first game is what I go back to. The music, the colors, take me right back to the arcades. Awesome vid.

    The cool thing about SNK-fighting games is the consistency and "shared universe". Geese Howard was also the bad guy in Art Of Fighting (which came out a bit before Fatal Fury), but he was much younger and had longer hair. It happens 10+ years before Fatal Fury. Geese also screwed up Ryo and Robert's life by kidnapping their father Takuma and sister Yuri. The reveal that the mysterious masked bad guy Mr. Karate was actually Takuma who was being blackmailed was a massively cool twist and I remember people talking about it a lot.

    This is one of the few good reviews on Fatal Fury here on RUclips. Most people seem to miss the mark and the historical importance of this game on the genre, especially since it is one of the first few games.
    When you kick Geese out of that window the first time it's and AMAZING FEELING.

    8:26 was this Canadian pricing?, $700 for the AES & $250 for games?
    I bought the Neo•Geo Gold System (2 joysticks + Baseball Stars Pro) for $550 and the games were $170 each, with the exception of League Bowling, which was actually only $120 brand new at the time. When I bought the system + a game they even threw in a free Memory Card ($30 value) which was nice.
    I nearly went with the Silver Edition for $399, but I wanted 2 controllers and Baseball Stars Professional was/is an awesome game.
    Keep up the great work man, and let's see more Neo-Geo classics! :)
    How about some Cyber-Lip, a criminally underrated game by some of the same developers who went on to make Metal Slug!

    i can relate to your feelings of Fatal Fury. it was at a local video game rental/sales/arcade shop by my house as a kid. i played it and wasn't impressed, but i still thought it was cool. but the thing that really makes it special was in '94, when i got a NEO GEO as my graduation present. fatal fury was one of the games i got with it and i will never forget hearing the Richard Meyer stage music from the comfort of my stereo. its such a funny sounding song, but at the same time it was cool because there was singing in it and that was just amazing for the time!

    Honestly,even though i played street fighter turbo as a kid,all i ever wanted to do was just pull off special moves.Never was into the whole combo thing.Fatal Fury and the Real Bout series especially allowed me to finally just do special moves.I honestly beleive that SNK games focused more on special moves than they did combos,and i love SNK for that.To pull off the Power Geyser right as Geese throws a Double Reppuken and canceling that out and wrecking Geese's shit is beyond satisfying.To pull off the Ho-oh Kyaku(hope i didnt misspell it) as Ryuji does the Driller(Legitimatley happened to me.Bastard did the Driller right next to me and the second he did it,i did mine.I cant begin to describe how awesome it was.) Fatal Fury hands down is better than Street Fighter.

    I was only 2 when the original came out but I got the Genesis/MegaDrive port when I was older and had a Genesis. I spent a lot of time playing it. That's one thing I miss from being a kid, getting a game or two and being unable to get more very often so you spend so much time playing the games you do have. Kids these days could do with that kind of wait for new games I think, it would make them more appreciative when good ones come out instead of drinking up the yearly COD swill.

    Geese Howard is so insane on arcade difficulty! If you look at 7:08, he killed Johnny in just THREE hits. If you can beat him, its up there with defeating Tyson in Punch Out in terms of gaming accomplishments. Honestly.
    I agree that the original Fatal Fury has sluggish controls, I've always felt that as well, but SNK did improve them with later releases. Real Bout Fatal Fury will always be my favourite (of the ones that actually have "Fatal Fury" in the title, as Garou: Mark of the Wolves is probably the best of the entire series) for that reason.

    Ive always loved Neo Geo's games. The cabinets were great!! They were the main reason I went grocery shopping with my mom on Sunday mornings when I was a kid, to play Samurai Showdown. Eventually because I loved Fatal Fury, World Heroes and Samurai Showdown so much, King of Fighters kinda became my go to 2D fighter. Still love Street Fighter, but KoFs gets me more.
    Also, I enjoyed the Fatal Fury movie, it was decent enough. Havent seen Hungry Wolf but I think I have it on DVD somewhere.

    the Neo Geo can draw sprites 16 pixels wide and 16 to 512 pixels tall so huge characters like Earthquake or Raiden were no problem, unlike the other consoles at the time which worked with individual 8x8 or 16x16 tiles to draw objects...

    Great review of a game that I overlooked back in the day. I had a MD/Genesis back in 93 and didn't know much about Fatal Fury but I had seen that Street Fighter Special Championship Edition had been released for it in a mag.
    Since seeing and playing the game in the arcades I wanted it so bad and when I seen the original console port being exclusive to the SNES I was gutted. My parents were quite tight as they wouldn't allow me to have multiple consoles so when I begged and pleaded with them to get me an SNES so that I could play Street Fighter at home they said I had to get rid of my MD.
    As soon as I found out about Street Fighter being released on the MD I begged my dad to get me it for my birthday and while we were in the gamestore I had seen Fatal Fury for the first time sitting there on the shelf and I picked them both up. I wanted them both and my said choose one, I was stood there for about 45 minutes constantly changing my mind and in the end went with Street Fighter just because of how long I had wanted it for the MD. That day back in 93 was the first and last time I would ever pick up a Fatal Fury game as to this day I am still yet to play either Fatal Fury or King of Fighters.

    • @KronnangDunn
      @KronnangDunn 9 лет назад

      I played Fatal Fury just as it popped in the arcades back in 1991. Skipped school a couple times to play but it was damn worth it.

    • @perfectsplit5515
      @perfectsplit5515 9 лет назад

      KronnangDunn Actually, it was called, "Fatal Fury: King of Fighters". The sequel was "Fatal Fury II". And the next sequel after that was "King of Fighters '94". There was some home video console version that called it, "King of Fighters". But it was really the same game as "Fatal Fury: King of Fighters".

    • @perfectsplit5515
      @perfectsplit5515 9 лет назад

      KronnangDunn At the University of Delaware arcade, there was usually a line of people waiting to play Street Fighter II, but Fatal Fury was usually available. So I just played that. The graphics seemed so much "brighter" than those of SF II. But it was Street Fighter II that truly sparked the revolution in 1-on-1 fighting games of the 90s. To an extent, Fatal Fury was a SFII clone.

    • @perfectsplit5515
      @perfectsplit5515 9 лет назад

      KronnangDunn Joe Higashi was my favorite, since he looked so muscular and martial-artsy. I disliked Terry Bogart because he looked so plain. Nothing exotic-looking about him. He was just a generic fighter, who did not seem to represent any particular discipline. I always preferred the characters who clearly represented a particular discipline.

    • @perfectsplit5515
      @perfectsplit5515 9 лет назад

      At a time when the 16-bit Sega Genesis and the 16-bit Super NES were about $200, the 24-bit Neo-Geo home console was a whopping $1600! I wonder if they sold a single unit.

  • @SikSlayer
    @SikSlayer 9 лет назад

    I didn't know until recent years is that the Neo CD version has no load times after the initial one. The entire game fits in the memory of the system, and thus you get CD audio. I guess that makes it otherwise better than the cart version.

    I am surprised you didn't mention the 2 on 1 vs the CPU when playing 2 player. Then of course you fight each other. BTW, to beat Billy Kane, just keep throwing him. Then he loses his cane and you throw him right when it gets thrown back to him. I also suggest jumping over Geese Howard's raging storm waves and throwing him. The C button is pretty brutal when used right.

  • @berugaslabor
    @berugaslabor 9 лет назад

    I like how they created a story-world for the FF series and its characters with Southtown. Street Fighter (and other fighting games) never really bothered with those aspects and just had generic background stages all over the world with no real connections. Whereas Southtown comes of as this vibrant in-depth almost Gotham:ish city with a lot of different places and environments, plots and characters to explore, maybe developed and realized to its fullest in Garouw Mark of the Wolf. But i think the foundation for SNK:s Southtown "soap-opera" (in lack of a better term) story-world is laid already here and in the first Art of Fighting game!

    I agree, the NEO GEO system was always on display at the top shelf. It was like looking up at the heavens at our local Babbage's (now Gamestop) praying to get my broke ass 15 year old hands on this divine creation.

    Just have to say that I love the neogeo. Such a bad ass system. Still expensive even today.

    Now you're speaking my language, but you left out the Street Smart comparisons!?! It's alright, I didn't know that shit either until the one and only B. Miller filled me in.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts, memories and enthusiasm for Fatal Fury. Very enjoyable video. I saw many Neo Geo cabinets when the system was new, but I don't recall ever seeing Fatal Fury in the arcade. I found out about Fatal Fury when I took a chance on it as a rental for the Genesis, as I think it was available for quite a few months before Street Fighter 2. I enjoyed it at the time. Strangely, I never really sat down with the Fatal Fury games after that, having put more time into Art of Fighting and King of Fighters when it comes to SNK's stuff.

    Never seen this in the arcades but played the crap out of the MegaDrive version which of course isn't as good but still hold up pretty well, There was no hope of getting the home system back then it was crazy expensive.

    Could also be considered a spin-off in some sense to Street Fighter since they were made by the same person.

    Gotta love your energy.
    Btw, can you give me some advice on good Master System games? I finally got time and money to begin my SEGA collection and next week I'm picking up my console along with Phantasy Star :-)
