I think he gets overlooked because Tom Scholz gets all the attention (and rightfully so) because he writes almost all the music and lyrics. I just think Brad gets overlooked somewhat. Michele C-F, it’s a bit of a new experience for me...this “tunneling through” videos. Usually I have something in mind and follow that particular thing until I’ve had enough. It. Now that I finished this song for the first time I feel like Joanne just proved the point I was trying to make, anybody who can play leads like that can carry a good three piece band

Nice to see Joanne here! It must be a year back or more I suggested her to you but only another track (blackest day live version) She's one of my favorite female bluesplayers and I like all aspects of her playing. She has the sound, the technique and she always goes to the edge, she really gives it all on stage! Thanks Phill and btw; really loved your interview with Frank Marino! Great video! I didn't know Joanne Shaw Taylor and she is awesome. Somehow she reminded me of Ritchie Kotzen (of course at a different level) with the singing and the long solo.

It's nice to see some one playing original bluesy stuff like this, especially these days with all sorts off horrible music on the radio. her guitar playing is good, her vibrato really connects with the listener. good tone and her chops are there. The emotional content in her playing really sticks out, and in her voice even more so. she reminds me a bit of Melissa ethridge vocal wise, they have a similar grit and timber. I have been in two three piece bands, I really like that but it needs the right drummer and bassist. They have to be of the right mindset to pull it off. Really like her style!!!. thanks Fil!!!
Thanks for this one. JST has probably been my favourite guitar player for the past few years. Judging by the bass player this performance is about five years old. He's been replaced by someone a bit more active and she's also added a keyboard player/second guitarist to the line-up. I think, even since this was filmed, she's developed a lot as a performer, how she interacts with the audience and the band, and I don't think I've ever seen anyone who looks more like they enjoy playing guitar. What I particularly like about her playing is her dynamic sense, and the way she combines rhythm and lead. It fills a lot of space in the mix, and I think some of that would be lost in a larger set-up. She's also built up a pretty good catalogue of original songs by now, with enough variety to add something extra to avoid the potential danger of simply repeating blues cliches.
Interesting. Just found out about her recently, and bought tics for a June 1st show here in Raleigh last week. She's got "it". Still waiting on Carolyn Wonderland though... Cheers, Fil!
Seen her around a dozen times now. She sometimes covers "Manic Depression" . Absolutely awesome player. First saw her play at Colne Blues Festival when she was around 16 yrs old. Met her mum and dad at a couple of her gigs; lovely people!
Hi Fil .... time for the ladies ~ How bout Joan Jett - Crimson & Clover / I Hate Myself ( live ) She's been rockin' it hard soooooo great for many years .... and defies nature because she looks , plays & sounds better with age. It's her time... let Joan ROCK 😎🎸 Thanks Fil for tonight's video and analysis !
Fil - I love your analysis videos! I've been playing for 50+ years, but I always learn something from you. One thing I like about this particular video is that you give some constructive criticism about the bass in this mix and you also suggested that Taylor could flesh out her great sound with a few more players; maybe keyboard or horns or both. I totally agree on both points! The bass player is okay , but he's too low in the mix he seems to be playing it safe with basic lines throughout the set. Also, as amazing as Taylor is on both vocals and guitar, I think a good keyboard and/or horn section could make her stand out even more. Keep up the good work that you do, Fil!
I started a comment about lovi loving her voice and your description soulful, gritty and thick! Love that in a singer but couldn't verbalize it nor finish this sentence with out my phone battery quitting! Gotta hear more!
Not only are your analysis videos great, but you provide us with great music to check out. Don’t know if you do suggestions but I’d like to see an analysis on Tosin Abasi. Great modern guitarist.
The power here is in the performance and the emotional lead playing. Regardless of the formidable amounts of technique this woman has, it must be sold to a audience on a level the audience understands and she pulls it off brilliantly.
Smokin'!... Wow... u weren't wrong when you said this could be the main solo coming up... I mean Joanne really drove a juggernaut through the track with that solo!!
I think she fits right in with Bonnie Raitt, Big Head Todd and Ryan Adams somewhere and that is a very sincere compliment. Sort of a nice fusion of rock, blues and jazz but not overdone. I like to chill out to this kind of music.
Thanks Fil, for your reaction to the great JST! As always, an excellent analysis, but I have to disagree with your producer's hat suggestion. No overproduction necessary! Joanne has the chops to pull off a satisfying trio performance. There are few who can. I'm glad she does and I hope she continues. Like 72, C64, V411. /:-)
She toured here and was support for Joe bonamassa!! liked her playing more than joe`s.. Joanna has definately improved in those few years since.. hoping she tours here again.. so Fil when are you proposing??/
Hope you ever gonna do Johnny Guitar Watson one day. One of the best entertainers on stage and a serious guitarslinger. He was the reason that Frank Zappa picked up a guitar at the age of fourteen. Saw him once in Amsterdam and it was a legendary concert.
Maybe I've gone over the edge bonker nuts.....but everything about that seemed totally UNIQUE to me.....every aspect....composition.... voice.....what she played......gonna look her up now.....see if I can find more and also see if she's playin near me.......ok.... I lied last nite.......I like and am up for an adventure
Joanne has toured with a keyboardist in the past. I suggest searching you tube for the song Kiss The Ground Goodbye from 2014. Her fretwork is amazing. Probably one of the best guitarist on the road right now.
Joanne has amazing skills on the guitar and brilliant vocals. She happens to be good friends with Joe Bonamassa which I think shows in her playing to. She is very underrated
She’s absolutely amazing! Her voice reminds me of a modern day Janis Joplin. Her guitar playing really kicked in after a mellow start! Excellent musician! She rocks! 🤘🏼 I do think they need a stronger rhythm section especially with the bass, turn it up a bit 👍🏼
Never heard of this gal...JST...chicks with guitars are always entertaining but this chick can really play! Just when I think she’s reached her limit, she pulls out more tricks and all while still singing! True talent!
Your idea about Sony, with whom Joanne is signed, equipping Joanne with a full featured blues band, is excellent, Fil. Joanne blows other players off the stage.
Fil I love watching your analysis videos. I don’t know if this is the place to request you listen to someone and do a video analysis but please check out Damian Salazar. He’s a street performer and blows my mind. Thanks!
Joanne Shaw Taylor comes a lot closer to realizing her potential on White Sugar, she seems to be far less restrained. That could very well be due to the suits not wanting to risk anything, or possibly, she has only been active since 2002, which in Blues genre is a blink of an eye.
Hey Fil, have you done Bonnie Raitt yet? She's one of those guitarists that can play so few notes, yet play so much...kinda like B.B., great voice too.
I will be adding a video of myself, as I analyze a British guitarist that is analyzing another British guitarist! For all you mirror in a mirror picture fans that want to step back from actually doing something yourself. Stay tuned!
I disagree in principal about the size of the band, some of the great ones almost never had more than three members,my best example is Johnny winter. For Rock and Roll look at zz top and the stray cats !
JST has mad skills on the guitar, and a voice that was created for the blues, she has great composing skill, and she is not hard to look at either. B U T . . . When she is doing a live performance, the lyrics she is singing is all but intelligible. It’s like she is chewing the words and swishing them around in her mouth. On studio albums, none of that is present. The diction and annunciation is clear and sung without the cloudiness of live performances. I don’t know whether it’s the sound man’s impropriety in the mix or if she is actually masticating her music Just sayin . . . STILL, a big fan ! This is actually my third time watching this reaction/analysis. Also a big fan of this sight.
I follow JST. She's just great. Close your eyes and you will definitely hear Susan Tedeschi in her vocals. Joanne is certainly a force to be reckoned with.
Sultry voice over a blues - that's always a good mix - throw in that lead and wow kickass! I hope her studio albums aren't too polished - rock needs a bunch of live albums like back in the 70s to catch the energy of these bands. Have you looked at the Main Squeeze? Not sure if they have any originals, but put their own spin on covers of some well knows classic rock songs. They've got a live playlist, as well as some "live in studio" vids. ruclips.net/user/MainSqueezeMusic
Seen her live 4 times, great player, very subtle and nuanced. 2 years on her voice is better too. Phil can I recommend you look at Alan Nimmo (King King), Ben Poole, Ash Wilson, Dan Patlansky.
Wow! Didn't know. Now I do, and that's a blessing. Shaw is really blessed. Thanks, Fil. Bless you.

Definitely horns! She rocks!
Bob Fridzema has been playing keyboards with her for some time now
Your idea about Sony, with whom Joanne is signed, equipping Joanne with a full featured blues band, is excellent, Fil. Joanne blows other players off the stage.
Really good. She reminds me alittle like Bonnie Raitt.
Could you take a look at Liquid Tension Experiment? Maybe Rhapsody In Blue. John Petrucci on guitar, and there's a Chapman Stick.
Fil I love watching your analysis videos. I don’t know if this is the place to request you listen to someone and do a video analysis but please check out Damian Salazar. He’s a street performer and blows my mind. Thanks!
Yes in the comments is the right place!
Oh that sound of hers is awesome but so is her voice. 👍
an analysis vid for Larkin Poe would be cool
Joanne Shaw Taylor comes a lot closer to realizing her potential on White Sugar, she seems to be far less restrained. That could very well be due to the suits not wanting to risk anything, or possibly, she has only been active since 2002, which in Blues genre is a blink of an eye.
Hey Fil, have you done Bonnie Raitt yet? She's one of those guitarists that can play so few notes, yet play so much...kinda like B.B., great voice too.
Great choice Joy. B ! Yes Fil.... Bonnie Raitt is a must do video for sure ! 😎
bigbow62 Bonnie is a legend. Beautiful lady inside and out.
She's here somewhere!
I will be adding a video of myself, as I analyze a British guitarist that is analyzing another British guitarist! For all you mirror in a mirror picture fans that want to step back from actually doing something yourself. Stay tuned!
I have been 'reacted' to before for my music years ago so maybe pick someone less known! 😂 wingsofpegasusband.com/about-me

🤘
I don’t know whether it’s the sound man’s impropriety in the mix or if she is actually masticating her music
Just sayin . . .
STILL, a big fan !
This is actually my third time watching this reaction/analysis.
Also a big fan of this sight.
Listen to her sing Summertime!
I follow JST. She's just great. Close your eyes and you will definitely hear Susan Tedeschi in her vocals. Joanne is certainly a force to be reckoned with.
☝🏻
She sounds like 'Richie Kotzen' which can't be a bad thing.
I forgot to say,Fil you Rock!
Thanks!
I like her more classic blues tracks over this funky wah style, but still another good track.
One day, I wish you take a listen at Kawabata Makoto from Acid Mother Temple. Thanks! :)
what about Melissa Ethridge ?
Wow !! Her guitar playing is just amazing and doesn't she ever sound like Susan Tedeschi...don't you think?
Yeah a little!
Not yet!
Seen her live 4 times, great player, very subtle and nuanced. 2 years on her voice is better too.
Phil can I recommend you look at Alan Nimmo (King King), Ben Poole, Ash Wilson, Dan Patlansky.
👍
Brass sections are classy, just like you, Fil! \m/(>.
Have a look at steely sabbath on u tube.
HI FIL CHICS ARE GOOD PLAYING .BUT NOBODY CAN TOP YOU. EVER. STAY SAFE OUT THERE. PEACE AND LOVE. STAY COOL
PAir Joanne's blues with Tal Wilkenfeld's jazz what a combo Jazzy Blues... Me thinks the gender gap is shrinking...
