This is part one of Maître d'armes Cecil Longino's lecture on the history of the French school of fencing. Parts 2 through 5 will follow.
The Association for Historical Fencing (AHF) is an organization created specifically to meet the needs of those who are engaged in the practice, teaching and research of classical and historical fencing. As an educational institution it provides factual information on the fencing arts and related martial systems as practiced in Europe from the Middle Ages through to the beginning of the 20th century.
The Association for Historical Fencing is a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit corporation registered in the State of New Jersey.

The anecdote about the edict was funny and interesting.
If my people could have half the love you have for their own history, that would be awesome.
Just two small remarks : in french, we talk about the Ancien Régime, not Régime Ancien. It's the official way to talk about what was before the french revolution.
About the left hand in the back, that you mentioned briefly, you didn't mention the purpose. So in case someone is wondering why, it's to help propulsing and regrouping. It acts as a counterbalance.

The laws keeping schools of Fence out of the city of London is older than this period. It is also viewed that such schools attract the wrong sort. We should note that London does not have a University. Paris does.
Also there were the loop holes in the law and why people had schools of fence in the city on formally ecclesiastical land such as Black Friars
