Really enjoyed watching them & your excellent analysis Fil. I'm 50 , my brother is 60 and I have 2 sisters in their 70's . The one group we all like are The Shadows . My brother was lucky enough to be taken by one of my sisters to see them at Bristol Colston Hall circa 1964 but as he was only 5 ,he remembers very little about it !

I have heard about the Shads since I was kinda rather 7, wee bit more or less. I heard them on the radio back then and my parents always come to tune in that channel on exact time on Sunday and that was fond memories about music to me. In Thailand they quite known a bit if you're kinda 60 or more, but kids these days only heard of Clapton the most not Hank.
and yes I'm just 34 and I grew up listening to 60s, I become a bit outsider due to that but hell, Shads are guitar heroes of guitar heroes.

Hi Fil! I love The Shadows! Cliff Richard always comes to mind when I see them play! Cliff says that they never had any falling out when they split, but only broke up because of different career paths..they came back together more than once. Hank, and Bruce were two of the best musicians on guitar! They also were good actors having played in movies with Cliff! I am so glad you showcased them ...I love them with with Cliff, but they were perfect on their own! They could sure get large audiences too! As a side note Cliff Richard did a version of Move It with Queen’s Brian May! Thanks Fil for doing this video! One of your best! ✌️

Hank Marvin is rarely, if ever, mentioned as a guitar "hero". But he had the chops. Great clean tone all without the aid of a wall of amps.

He never used distortion either. Plenty of guitarists' playing inadequacies are disguised by its use.

I'm so pleased to see this one from you! I saw The Shadows the age of 10 @ the London Palladium and was blown away. Sadly, The Beatles and their music drew me away (I saw them live too in the early 60s) and it is only decades later I got back into The Shadows music. Sadly, no more concerts, only tribute bands and past videos. I've been inspired to return to learning the guitar too. There will never be another Shadows they were unique and will always be the best in my view.

Beautiful video as all your other ones I am watching these days. Just a little thing you missed in your brilliant Shads biography. Between 1970 and 1977, John Farrar an Australian guitarist and singer from the Strangers, joined Hank and Bruce to form Marvin, Welch and Farrar (Brian was there to play drums as well). They did three vocals album which are true gems, last one without Bruce. Because of the fans always asking them to play Shadows tunes they finally reform the group in 1973 with John Farrar as second lead guitarist. They did two Albums with him "Rocking with Curly Leads" (instrumental) and "Specs Appeal" Half vocals and instrumental in 1975 with the "Let me be the one" song they did for the European Song Contest. They also play with Cliff during that era. Even if some songs were used in the 1977 album "Tasty", John Farrar unfortunately (for us) left the band to produce, write and play for Olivia Newton John (yes he wrote some of the Grease hits among others for her) and also went to the US with his wife Pat Carroll who sang with Olivia before. Unfortunately because he brought a lot to the Shadows especially in the creating part and vocal harmony, even to Hank playing. Anyway, again, thank you for your thoughtful videos.

An outstanding analyses with your usual interesting back story. I really don't know how many subs you had when I started watching you, I think it was under 23,000. I was embarrassed the first time I clicked on one of your videos, but I clicked on another one when you came up, and subbed and have never been disappointed. The only two videos that I hesitated on clicking were Meat Loaf (political reasons) and Miley Cyrus. But I watched them anyway and didn't regret your humanitarian music appreciation. Sad you are surprised at Cliff's popularity, but blame Elvis, who was totally complicit in ensuring USA talk shows, radio stations, and even EMI, ensured Cliff did not have a fair playing field in the USA.
America's loss, not ours, but Elvis always knew he could not lace Cliff's boots.

Great analysis Fil! Hank B. Marvin (born Brian Robson Rankin) is so many of the current guitar heroes hero. You can always tell that it's Hank. There are loads of stories that I've read about the influence of Hank and The Shadows... Like - Bruce Welch used to get really worried about his guitar being in tune before going on stage. So worried that he would ask Hank or Jet Harris to tune it for him for a payment of half a crown (that's 12 and1/2p in today's money). Like - Mark Knopfler ( a Geordie just like Hank) who is naturally left-handed, posing with a tennis racquet and playing air guitar in front of the mirror like his hero Hank. In Mark's view of his reflection, his hold on the racquet matched Hank's right - handed style! Until Mark's older sister saw him and said that he was " holding it the wrong way round". Hence Mark changed hands and the rest is history. Like - Hank really wanted a Strat and you could not buy one in England in the late 1950's because Fender did not have a U.K. distributor. So Cliff bought the Strat for Hank, directly from the U.S and had it shipped over. Think it took 6 weeks to arrive and Cliff paid something like 450 guineas for the instrument ( a guinea was £1 and 1 shilling in the old days, now £1 and 5 pence). Some years ago I met a guitarist who was the secretary/organiser of a branch of the U.K. Shadows Appreciation Society. This guy - a left handed player bought a white l/h Strat, had it professionally stripped, re-painted the correct shade of Fender red to match Hank's, completely refitted with gold finished hardware etc. Everything right down to the last detail to replicate his hero's instrument! And boy could he play like the man. He even had an extended lever for the tremolo system to make playing more comfortable. Such is the influence of Hank B. Marvin and The Shadows! While we are on guitar instrumental bands, have you ever heard of a Swedish outfit called The Spotnicks? They used to wear full space suits on stage! They did a brilliant version of "Hava Nagila". Thanks again Fil!!!

Had it not been Cliff Richard &... The Shadows including Cliff as the singer would have been a band writing their own material long time before The Beatles since Cliff Richard also did write songs with Marvin & al.
The 1977 album "Hank Marvin's Guitar Syndicate" shows a more progressive side of Hank Marvin. I think "New Earth pt 1 & 2 " is the best known track from that album.

Back to my earliest musical memories, the Shadows alone. The other guitarist I really liked was Duane Eddy, and then somewhere along the line I picked up the Fifty Guitars of Tommy Garrett. I only wish I had started learning the guitar then and not just last year. Muting strings? I'm very good at that, unfortunately not when they should be muted! I saw the Shadows live in Hong Kong with Cliff Richard and Olivia Newton John, between 1971 and 1973. Being a stadium show we couldn't see the synchronised walks though. Another good one Fil.

I'm not sure, Fil, whether you have made the point that it wasn't Hank playing on "Move It", it was Ian Samwell Smith and a session guitarist. I don't know much about drumming, but I've always considered Brian Bennett to be one of the best. At one stage three out of the four Shadows had the first name Brian! Everyone, quite rightly, speaks of Hank and the Shadows as such a great influence on the upcoming generation of guitar players, but let's not forget Bert Weedon, who did so much to popularise the guitar and wrote the book we all bought to learn the instrument, "Play in a Day". Perhaps an analysis of a Weedon performance could be considered? Thanks!

Suggestion / Request - Michael Cleveland Fiddle, extraordinary musician and fantastic back story is nominated for a Grammy at tonight awards show. It's be so cool for you to feature a segment on a Fiddle player, after you did a vidoe with Roy Clark playing fiddle, and it would be awesome for you to introduce Michael Cleveland to your audience and analyze how he plays. I suggest 1 of two videos. My favorite is with Billy Strings but it's long - nearly 10 mintes and Michael doesn't even get rolling until 4:30 into it.... but man oh man!!!! IT's good. Michael plays with all the best but Billy Stgrings takes him somewhere I don't think he has often had opportunity to GO! It's spectacular. - you might find a lot to talk about there>
SO With Billy Strings playing "Sally Goodin'" : ruclips.net/video/uC0TPnStIfc/видео.html
With his band Flamekeepers also "Sally Goodin" ruclips.net/video/Cp9JrPsHTQI/видео.html Michael gets pretty progressive with this one at about 4:45 - but he doesn't have Billy Strings there to go along with him.
Here is a good one from Bluegrass Underground "Good-bye Old Pal" Yodeling included ruclips.net/video/a4JJ5i2kpXo/видео.html
The last one there is probably the easiest to work with.
Thanks again for all you do.. Really love the analysis of the Mental Landscape of SRV playing!

But what a price tag for someone who doesn’t make their living making music! I’ve watched your video on what you have, but have you ever had to consider whether or not you can justify a piece of equipment?

Fil. do you know if Hank uses a pick? I've checked several video's and I can't see one because he always has the whammy bar in his hand. It looks like he is using his thumb and first finger.

Really! Why don't they do away with it all and make it less of a hassall for you? You can pin it and we can watch it all the way thru, give Fil a break!

Thanks for the lesson on reverb. You are still wrong Hank very rarely use's reverb, mainly use's echo and he always use's echo on Shadoogie live or studio. Look up the history of Hank Marvin and the Shadows you will find from the 50's to date he used many echo machines the list is as long as you arm. You wont get the Marvin sound if you add reverb with the echo it simply gets messy.

I guess we're into the realms of reverb as an effect added, or reverb as in natural reverberation due to the acoustic space. So in a large venue as this is, there's definitely the reverberation of the open space. It's difficult to know how much of the acoustic space comes across in the recording as usually it's a direct to mixer sound. But it may be the reverb is natural due to the venue and mic positioning on the night.

I have to say I never heard of these guys. This song is all music,no vocals.

They were huge in the UK back in the 60's (before The Beatles, I think) but never got anywhere in the US. They backed Cliff Richard but only did instrumentals without him.

    ITS ECHO NOT REVERB

    • @wingsofpegasus
      @wingsofpegasus  3 года назад +1

Echo is a repeat of the signal, reverb is the sound of the ambient space. If I say reverb, I mean reverb! There is usually both reverb AND delay (echo) added to a sound, as a 100% dry delay signal will always sound out of place unless paired with some reverb.

Reverb was added post recording by the Abbey Road engineers using the famous reverb chambers.
