    Your channel is really a treasure trove and I'm glad I found it early on.
    Recently I learned of the Rule of the Octave, and it's really helped. I'm working on sightreading Bach Chorales and the ROTO has helped to understand how he was taught and how he thought. There is a lot of material on the sight for Derek Remes, including the translation of a book by Kellner.

    Thank you Francheska. Sight reading is the most challenging part of learning piano (as an adult person driven by your own free will and not by your parent/teacher) because of immense frustration you get of trying slowly to decipher those inhuman inscriptions and really not much of direct joy from succeeding, so I never was able to really keep it on par with my hands technique. I've never thought of special "sight reading books" for different levels and I think I'm going to follow your advice and just start from grade one.

    I practice about 3 hours a day as an intermediate pianist. I focus on technical exercises in the morning for the first hour (Hanon, scales, chords, arpeggios, etc). After a few hours break I will play some pieces I’m trying to learn or work on sight reading for another 45-60 minutes. Then in the evening I will continue working and refining pieces I’m working on until bedtime (1.5-2 hours). Since I’m retired I have more free time than people that have a job. Because of this I feel I have progressed nicely over the last 15 months. I took piano lessons many years ago but never had the time to consistently practice. I hope to one day be a decent amateur pianist.

    Excellent vid. Best yet!!! Great advice. My teacher always recommends sight reading a grade above your level so that the exam is easier - but I like your plan too as playing a lower grade helps to build confidence and speed.

    • @BitesizePiano
      @BitesizePiano  2 года назад

      In exams, the pieces you learn are much more advanced than the sight reading they give you. You’re given sight reading excerpts 2-3 grades lower than the standard of your pieces.

    Hi,
    Yesterday I was struggling trying to play
    "Sweet Home Chicago".
    It's a twelve bar blue and as a beginner it's too hard for me to coordinate both hands as the right hand is kind of improvisation and is different from the left.
    I need some exercises to build strength, dexterity, independence of hands, sight reading on the left and right side of the piano ( notes with auxiliary ledger lines above and below).
    I have a book on scales, arpeggios and broken chords in several keys. They are good exercises, but any piece has notes above and below and those exercises do not train for this kind of sight reading.
    I guess those books like Hanon or Czerny do not train . The book I have create new clefs in the middle of the line and so rarely use the notes above and below in notation.
    I thought of doing exercises of my own, but surely I would commit mistakes in fingering jumping to one side to the other side of the piano.
    Thank you for your advices.
    The T-shirt is really beautiful and funny.
    Best wishes from Brazil🇧🇷

      You need to focus on essentially memorising one small section at a time (around 4 bars), and add another small section to it after that section. Try practising to a steady metronome also.
