Notch's code for the project was left in the game in one of the Beta versions. You can actually slightly edit that versions code for it to generate the same way it did in Notch's posts.
So, in a way, the Aether did somewhat exist inside a version of minecraft.

The "sky dimension" is actually availible to play, at least in Java edition. Under world type, select single biome, and scroll to sky islands.
Yeah, i played it a week ago, i don't know why he is speaking as if the dimension was removed.

The end dimension is actually still referred to as “SKY” internally
It changed in 1.13 or smth I think
It is highly likely that the data wasn't fully abandoned, being used to create The End dimension and the Floating Island world type.
Fun fact: The Aether's creator tooks the code of the "sky islands" custom world and use it to program more easily the Aether

There is a feature in Minecraft: when creating a new world, you will come across the floating islands customisation option. Select it, create new world and enjoy(works in java edition only)...

Dreaming in Minecraft would actually be awesome. It could put you there on a timer, and you would temporarily have creative mode, you could build whatever you wanted and when the dreams end and start up again, you spawn where you left off. If you fall into the void it would either send you back to the overworld, or launch you back up.
fun fact: for Java edition plays you can actually access this dimension because of world types. There is a floating island option and you can access thy sky dimension because of this. Unfortunately, I play on Bedrock edition. I can't access it.

U figured it out. I can’t believe it. The end is… the end of the player. He dies. The player when he sleeps enters the dream dimension but when he sleeps for his last time, his beautiful dimension is destroyed by monsters. That or the end is just a nightmare

Let me give you a (Not true) backstory.
Nothing is alive to remember it, or nearly nothing. There are three beings, one of which has long outstayed its welcome there.
When it first arrived at the magical land, it had beautiful and mystic properties. It was a very powerful, almost god-like being. It found a world that was comprised of many enormous islands on a mesmerizing planet. They were amazing lands, and the being was completely satisfied. As time went on, it grew weary of the plains inhabited by the only species there, the apex inhabitors.
The builders.
The Apex Inhabitors had a rough relationship with the being, but they coexisted well enough. They had an understanding, because they both built great things and had death-defying powers. The Apex Inhabitors never truly died, as they had so much power that they could bend reality to rip them away from death. Only them, not what they were carrying. They got ripped back to wherever they last slept, as the beds contained the Apex's energy after being slept in at the price of losing their belongings.
One day, they decided to collect some samples of the matter around the being, as it contained the being's mystic magic after being in contact with it. The being lashed out, forcing them to respawn and taking their items. The Apex Inhabitors took this as an act of war, and they attacked the being. It raged so much that it lost control of its near infinite power, making its last conscious thought come true. It had, of course, thought of becoming a huge and frightful beast that flew and could shoot poisoned fire. It had transformed itself into just that, though the process was agonizing. It made the being into a dragon, but it released so much sheer energy that it forced thousands of years of evolution on animals and permanently killed several builders, turning them into skeletons and zombies, and made a few unable to respawn. However, it gave those right next to it some of its powers, and made them invincible and able to summon any material that they wish, even letting them fly. This transformation nearly destroyed the being, but it still had a bone to pick. It ravaged the lands, but there was still hope.
As I mentioned at the start, there were three beings that old. The other two were more practical and more skilled at controlling their power. They realized their home was at stake, so the two of them combined their near infinite energy. They banished the dragon, but it fought back. It had made them angry. They lost control, too, and they focused all of their combined power on the dragon. The dragon was gone, but they had fractured the landscape, shattered reality, and reduced themselves to atoms. They had put the builders into random groups across the broken landscape.
The dragon was in a strange place. There was a large chunk of corrupted land floating in an endless void. If you were to slaughter the beast, you would have the ability to travel to a very strange place. It was mostly empty, other than the building of the other two beings. If you went through the portal in the egg perch, you would hear the thoughts of the two atomized beings. This experience brings your experience to an end, as you put your headset down and contemplate it all.

1.21 needs to add the Aether with the boss being Notch's Ancient Red Dragon
When making a world, you can choose floating islands as world gen so it’s technically in the game, you can also choose the biome so you can have floating islands of any biome in the game. Floating nether islands, floating ocean islands, floating cave islands (some of these are best to try in creative)
Finally some one with actually sense these people know nothing about the game

Well I actually remember playing on the sky dimension. It was like 2019 and I decided to play a random old version of the game. But it was in the selection for the world type. I chose it and then I was in a world that looked exactly like that. So I can claim that it did exist in the game
a dimension like that would be cool, although I feel like it'd need a different entry mechanic to not be annoying since if it was random then either you couldn't access it consistently so it'd be a pain to find, needing you to wait multiple in game days for the RNG to kick in, or you'd randomly end up there when you were trying to do something in the overworld and just wanted to avoid mob spawns

I love how he chose to keep them in the files because if you get the immersive portals mod on Minecraft Java and turn on dimension stacking you can gain access to the skylands 1 and 2

If I were to guess the reason on why he wanted to do this is a reference to Castle in the sky, which included the inspiration for Iron Golems with flowers, beautiful floating sky island of mass destruction, and the dream just to go there(Pazu's dreams of proving his father was right there is an island in the sky, don't worry that's early in the story and the title of the story)

There was also another dimension which is actually a type of world you can make. It was called the Hell Dimension and it looked like the Nether.
There were also other dimensions you could make in Minecraft with older versions because, before Infinite Terrain Generation was a thing, you could set a world’s size and stuff. You could make multiple types of worlds like floating islands and stuff.
