Knew TVS News Editor Jim Monfort really well as I wrote to him several times as a child during the 1980s. My interest in tv prompted him to give me a special tour of the TVS Studios in Southampton which will never be forgotten. Meeting Fern Britton was the highlight 😂👍🏻
Wow..that epic piece of music. And all they were doing was introducing the TV programmes for the day! TVS was my favourite ITV company, even though I live in the Anglia region. They produced some smashing shows, like Catchphrase, Ruth Rendell Mysteries, Art Attack, Concentration and All Clued Up!
Epic music, sounds like the sountrack to a movie or something. Ah... what happened to the days of grand presentation on TV like this? It disappeared with the digital age.
"Good Morning, It's New Year's Day,1982.And this is Television South, TVS. The new Independent Television Company that's proud to serve both The South and South East of England. To begin with we bring in the new with for the first time our symbol which will soon become very familiar!".
I lived in Clacton-on-Sea in Essex between 1984 and 1986, the house I lived in had a Super High Gain Horizontally Polarized Wideband Aerial pointing at The Sudbury Transmitter in Suffolk, Yet this Aerial was able to get TVS as well. Even though the picture was a little fuzzy it was watchable.
@jason long: Interesting, so you were getting Anglia Television from the Suffolk transmitter and TVS albeit grainy? Surprised you didn't get Thames/LWT though, since my late maternal grandparents lived in East Tilbury in Essex also and only picked up London's franchises on their aerial.
When I saw the news on Q January 1982 and saw that great logo compared to the **** we got with Central. We lost ATV and it was replaced with something like a broken egg
They had a particularly nasty send off from Southern with an evening of programmes celebrating the achievements of Southern, which were quite modest, turning into a rant against TVS with a video of the chairman of Southern insulting the IBA and Richard Stilgoe singing a sarcastic son.
I'm pretty sure that would be where the systems were all being started up. The power to start the gallery up would be a heck of a lot, also, where the soundtrack would run off a RTR tape, the drop in power would cause the audio to faulter like that. That's what I reckon... :-)
The music is not "New Forest Rondo". I bought a second-hand TVS "Country Ways" CD which contains a track by that name but it is not this tune nor anything like it. I believe the music may just be called "The New Forest", but I'm not remotely sure.
It apparently is called "The Morning Overture". It might have been renamed by its composer some years later. A complete recording is here: ruclips.net/video/htm_1ovYtCk/видео.html
What idiot firm of big four accountants came up with that ridiculous bid? I'm sure if they had bid £15 million less they'd have retained that franchise. But it was a disasterous mistake buying MTM. Well it's all history now.
+Gary Lumley They weren't "cheated" out of it. TVS got themselves into a financial mess and couldn't afford the money they put forward for the licence.
+John West TVS went to death because they grew big too fast and weren't able to manage MTM Enterprises. So they died because of their own greed. They got themselves into a huge financial black hole and weren't able to pay their proposed amount for the licence. In fact, they almost went bust *completely* and nearly totally collapsed during the summer of 1992.
+Aidan Lunn (Ferguson Videostar) I just massively object to whatever deregulation allowed ITV to become a 'monolithic venture' rather than just 'whatever tv company was in your region'. It's one area Ulster has won out on, I think.
God Bless Soundcloud. I now have this on my playlist. I can’t believe it’s a TV station theme.

My left ear really appreciated this,

I remember watching this on New Years Day 1982. TVS were 'the best view in the South.'

It's sad, but the music is beautiful for a TV announcement.
And thus I finally comment on this video 30 years to the day that TVS began broadcasting.
God this musics like from a epic film :)
We didn't get the transmitter announcement for TVS until a couple of months later: This is TVS for the south and south east of England.

jason long If you had another aerial you could have pointed it towards Blue Bell Hill and got TVS clear.

North East Essex definitely had Anglia. Tilbury was much nearer London.
@@cjmillsnun Their aerial picked up Alexander Palace so I guess so.

OMG THIS VIDEO WAS UPLOADED WHEN I WAS BORN! 6-9-09 :D :D :D
TVS also made On Safari, No 73, Motormouth, Ultra Quiz, The Telebugs & How 2.
@Allen Jeremy: They also made Inspector Wexford and Fraggle Rock for the UK too.

That's more a glitch in the VHS that it was recorded on.
Yes, there was no problem on the live transmission@@cjmillsnun

@@nowster Oh, wow, amazing - thanks for that link! That's a great quality recording.

This is good but Centrals start up was much better. Thanks for posting anaway
Cebtral's start up on 1 January 1982 was abismal.
I dont like TVS, Southern went to death because of TVS.
StopScaringUs
Mary: Oh yeah...? Well, I DON'T LIKE YOU AND YOUR STUPID FANTASIES!!!
Yule: Here we go again.......
Southern was an awful region, far too complacent and dull. TVS showed the way; it's a shame they were cheated out of a longer contract, honestly.
