  • Just as we were setting up for sundown drinks on a lookout platform, the Sable run towards the waterhole followed closely by a pack of painted wild dogs. Exciting footage from Hwange national park / Camp Davisons concession. Thanks to our guide, Douglas "The Man"...
    Video taken on Galaxy S7 hence "pixellation" when viewed on bigger screen... sorry!

      @@en_kratiathey've chased prey into deeper waters. They likely recognize the animal by the horns and know they would suffer an injury easily. With a hippo they can outmaneuver it easily (though they can't bite through a full grown one) but this prey is agile and has the weapons to one shot them in the blink of an eye.

      Sable (& their Angolan cousins, the Roan antelope), are uniquely adapted, & pretty bold in temperament. A bit like a donkey, or a horse mentality, but in an antelope form! A formidable target for sure. Especially a male, fully grown like here. If the dogs went after an impala, or Thomson’s gazelle, wildebeest, etc. they’d have to exert so much energy running. Impala can leap ten feet from a standing position, and somewhat further when sprinting. They could even hunt ostrich but that means more running, and risking the death claws, on those prehistoric feet! Sable are very strong with their fully-developed horns, and don’t like backing down…The dogs are great pack hunters but sometimes bite off more than they can chew. But that’s not saying much - something like, 80 % of painted dog hunts are successful. Clearly not with sable!

      Nothing on this planet is successfully fending off 200 painted wolves. That's essentially infinite stamina. Id imagine with a top speed of 45 mph and being able to run at 37 mph for miles, there is nothing that can get away from 200 hungry painted wolves.

    That Sable was beautiful. Unfortunate for the wild dogs however. The pack was definitely not big enough to take on a fully grown male Sable. Now, wild dogs are fully capable of taking it down however, it would require a much bigger pack. If that were the case then they would have surrounded him on all sides and eventually overwhelmed him. But a big and healthy bull antelope is fully capable of holding his own against a small pack like this.

    Almost all of the horned veggie animals seem to have horns that are either too short, too curved, or curved in a shape that doesn't serve as a good weapon, with the exception of the Cape/African/Water Buffalos. They needed to be shaped straight like a spear. But there's a reason for everything.

    • @xhalanga
      @xhalanga 3 года назад +1

      I used to have the same thought until I saw how the bull buffalo uses its curved horns efficiently to lift up a lionesses and throws it in the air. It knew exactly how his horns were shaped because it spinned its head slightly to the other side so its horns could face straight to the lionesses, stabbed it and lifted it up. That's when I knew that curvature is there for a reason.

      That's right. But I did write almost all, not all. I have seen those same videos, so I amended my comment to highlight the Buffalos as an exception.

      Lions have a problem with a bull sable, they are not your garden variety antelope. The bulls are known to fight each other to the death over breeding rights. I did once see a Kudu bull with his harem walking by a bull Sable who was watching me. The Kudu turned and knocked him on his ass. Quite the sight, the Sable got up and gave him a look like "what was that for?" but nothing further. I believe the Sable would have kicked his ass if he wanted to.

It gets a bit repetitive watching the cats & co at work. Let's see the Sable & what it does along with Klipspringers, Wildebeest & Buffalo etc. It's just easy doing cats & dogs mainly, let's get in there & see the life of the vegetarians.
