Painted wild dogs attacking a Sable antelope

- Just as we were setting up for sundown drinks on a lookout platform, the Sable run towards the waterhole followed closely by a pack of painted wild dogs. Exciting footage from Hwange national park / Camp Davisons concession. Thanks to our guide, Douglas "The Man"...
Video taken on Galaxy S7 hence "pixellation" when viewed on bigger screen... sorry!
You know you're watching a seriously intimidating animal when the pack of dogs decide to see if a HIPPOPOTAMUS might be a less daunting prospect.
These dogs fear the water not the antelope
@@en_kratia
I'd suggest you actually watch the video before posting patent nonsense.
@@en_kratia
It's in an inch of water FFS! Stop it!😂
@@en_kratiathey've chased prey into deeper waters. They likely recognize the animal by the horns and know they would suffer an injury easily. With a hippo they can outmaneuver it easily (though they can't bite through a full grown one) but this prey is agile and has the weapons to one shot them in the blink of an eye.

yea that antelope has a nice nec
He could kill all of them if he would.
Those horns mean business
Yeah cause having your balls n penis ripped out then your intestines a horrable way to go all herbivores knows this .
Wow. I am a big antelope fan now. How the attacker had to retreat before a stubborn and defiant opponent is really special.
Sable (& their Angolan cousins, the Roan antelope), are uniquely adapted, & pretty bold in temperament. A bit like a donkey, or a horse mentality, but in an antelope form! A formidable target for sure. Especially a male, fully grown like here. If the dogs went after an impala, or Thomson’s gazelle, wildebeest, etc. they’d have to exert so much energy running. Impala can leap ten feet from a standing position, and somewhat further when sprinting. They could even hunt ostrich but that means more running, and risking the death claws, on those prehistoric feet! Sable are very strong with their fully-developed horns, and don’t like backing down…The dogs are great pack hunters but sometimes bite off more than they can chew. But that’s not saying much - something like, 80 % of painted dog hunts are successful. Clearly not with sable!

timidly can quickly turn into tipping the prey apart. they were testing him out and decided it's not worth the risk because he's standing his ground.
Antelope: Who want it
Hippo: Keep walking chumps
Wild Dogs: we'll get em next time
Hippo did not even consider the dogs enough of a threat to even stop grazing and turn around !
Hippo said “ah nice! There go some ants in the form of dogs. I always wanted some of those as a pet. Put in a cage one day and have as pets.”
Obviously. Hippos are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too powerful for even male Lions.
@@Steves_fish Ok Ladies Love.
@@rebeltvr6046 I found thats only a recent phenomenon. They used to be by far the most dominant predators on the African continent.
Only 50 years ago they used to roll in packs of 100-200. But declining prey meant they couldn't sustain that many mouths and had to split off.
Nothing on this planet is successfully fending off 200 painted wolves. That's essentially infinite stamina. Id imagine with a top speed of 45 mph and being able to run at 37 mph for miles, there is nothing that can get away from 200 hungry painted wolves.
@@samo6083 I can see that. Lions, Hyenas, Leopards are weary of the wild dog. With 100-200, I can see how they'd be formidable. However, unlike Hyenas, these wild dogs (along with lions) are having a terrible time, probably because they need a large hunting range.

Great encounter, very lucky to see something like that. They wanted him to run but he was having none of it. Even a lion is wary of a bull sable.
lions kill sable if they are in a hunting party. They are quite capable of taking them. Fuck, they kill giraffes

Well put.
@@wilsonblauheuer6544 I said wary, not that they don't take them, Sable won't go down without a fight.
That Sable was beautiful. Unfortunate for the wild dogs however. The pack was definitely not big enough to take on a fully grown male Sable. Now, wild dogs are fully capable of taking it down however, it would require a much bigger pack. If that were the case then they would have surrounded him on all sides and eventually overwhelmed him. But a big and healthy bull antelope is fully capable of holding his own against a small pack like this.
Exactly he also kept his composure.. the moment he starts to run away he loses his advantage
The pack could still take the antelope but at a great cost. The losses would be too much to risk.
And would threaten the viability of future hunts.
Adult sables are not prey of wild dogs. Sables have killed lions by stabbing back while being attacked from behind. Wild dogs are better against waterbuck and kudu which can't defend as well as sables, roans, gemsboks etc.
They could of if they wanted too.. Just needs 2 etc...
It didn't appear to be about the pack. It appeared to be about the Saber staying in the deep waters!!!!
I had never seen such a beautiful and Strong antelope before!! nice video!

Wild dogs are literally capable of killing any animal that weighs 1ton> they literally kill cape buffalo adults.
This sable is nothing in comparison 🤣
It was likely a mock hunt, something wild dogs do to help less experienced members become more coordinated. They look like real hunts but just lack full commitment
Majestic sable antelope! Even lions are careful of them and wouldn't easily try a full grown male sable like that. Wild dogs didn't have a chance, they would have been badly injured or even killed by those horns.

Almost all of the horned veggie animals seem to have horns that are either too short, too curved, or curved in a shape that doesn't serve as a good weapon, with the exception of the Cape/African/Water Buffalos. They needed to be shaped straight like a spear. But there's a reason for everything.
I used to have the same thought until I saw how the bull buffalo uses its curved horns efficiently to lift up a lionesses and throws it in the air. It knew exactly how his horns were shaped because it spinned its head slightly to the other side so its horns could face straight to the lionesses, stabbed it and lifted it up. That's when I knew that curvature is there for a reason.

That's right. But I did write almost all, not all. I have seen those same videos, so I amended my comment to highlight the Buffalos as an exception.

The Sable Antelope is like Michael Jordan and the Wild Dogs were like the Detroit Pistons Bad Boys when they walked out in embarrassment when the Bulls swept them...lol
Sable is the most dangerous Antelope. There not to be mess with.
Lions have a problem with a bull sable, they are not your garden variety antelope. The bulls are known to fight each other to the death over breeding rights. I did once see a Kudu bull with his harem walking by a bull Sable who was watching me. The Kudu turned and knocked him on his ass. Quite the sight, the Sable got up and gave him a look like "what was that for?" but nothing further. I believe the Sable would have kicked his ass if he wanted to.
Together with the Gemsbok that is.
The difference between the hippo 🦛 and the antelope is that hippo doesn’t even acknowledge the dogs being there.
