To put it into perspective just how good Nelson was and how impressive it was that Sanchez stopped him. Nelson went 18-0 with 14 KOs in the following 8 years after being defeated by Sanchez until finally losing again to Whitaker in 1990. Nelson was never stopped in his career besides when Sanchez stopped him. Salvador Sanchez was the greatest Mexican Fighter of all time.
I am not disagreeing with you, but unfortunately Sanchez did not live long enough to make that statement absolutely true. He may have proven it if not for his early demise, but i think that fact cheated himself from being called the best ever. I reserve the title of greatest Mexican fighter of all time for Julio Chavez personally . His record up until his final few years proves it in my humble opinion. It is a terrible shame that Sanchez did not have the opportunity to prove his place as the greatest. He may have done it if given the chance.

Saw this one as it happened. Nelson was always a fearless beast. One of the best ever. I watched his entire career too. I don't think besides this bout I ever saw him hurt before. Salvador was a legend.

And must also say that he could be the best featherweight (if not the best boxer) that ever wore them gloves! He's got it all for crying out loud! -discipline, composure, class, strength, offense, defense, counter punching, boxing, slugging, power and high boxing IQ. I remember when I heard the news that he died, ( I was 22) ...a part of me died also....and even up to this time I can't help but regret that he did not live long enough to show us that he could have been even greater, which i believe he would have! Nelson's confindence and Ali's shuffle in the earlier rounds slowly began to disappear as the rounds went by, as he realized his punches were having absolutely no effect on Sánchez, like hitting concrete, and watching Salvador bouncing on his feet and with that cold poker face in the later rounds must have been a nightmare for Nelson. He was fighting an all time great, the best mexican fighter ever, the great Salvador Sánchez.
Nelson got tired at the later rounds because he took the fight on a short notice after the original challenger withdrew, so Sanches came into this fight with better conditioning than Nelson and that showed at the tail end of the fight.

The action of Corrales Castillo was incredible and the drama was tremendous but both guys were second rate champions. Sanchez was the unquestioned top feather and Nelson didn't lose for another 8 years and 2 weight classes and it took a prime whitaker to do it. Top guys putting on action like this is superior IMO to good fighters doing it.

Lo que es increíble es que al ver la pelea te deja la sensación que el salvador podía seguir otros 5 rounds tirando madrazos, lo hacia ver tan fácil, no como el canelo que se cansa a media pelea y luego se va recuperando, este cabrón así como empezaba terminaba, se dedico a lo suyo a prepararse de forma espartana para cada pelea, por eso es un orgullo, a parte de tener todas las cualidades para ser uno de los mejores, su determinación y preparación estaban a un nivel completamente diferente, lo demostró en todas sus peleas, al principio le faltaba experiencia, pero una vez se consolidó, fue en ascenso meteórico derrotando a los históricos y los mejores de la época y de forma contundente, es decir nunca dejo dudas a nadie de su superioridad en el ring, al que le pusieras, se ganaba el respeto de sus rivales, lo que hace mas lamentable su accidente.

Wow, two great fighters and one great fight. Azumah was not yet the polished fighter he was to become, but he was always the warrior. It is amazing to see him swing with even more ferocity every time his world gets rocked. Sanchez, what can you say about Sanchez? He was so cool, so calm, confident and skilled. The economy of motion, ring generalship, and even power he displayed were masterful. They don't come any better than Sanchez. Some people always believe the old time athletes were better. I tend to believe athletes have gotten better with time and advances in sport. The truly great ones would be great in any era though. Sanchez was one of those.

The same guys that can fight today (great ones) for 12 would've most likely been able to adapt to 15. It's the needs of the sport. Along with same day weigh ins.
@@3231bsln Yes, but even in the days of 15 round fights a fighter who had never been in a title fight would have to train for it the first time. The same goes for today's fighters. If they were expected to fight 15 rounds they could train for it. Our current knowledge of excercise physiology would give us an advantage. I think the WBC went with 12 round Title fights around 1982 and the WBA followed in 1987. 12 round fights have been around a long time. There are plenty of fighters then and today who looked good enough after 12 rounds that you would have to bet on their ability to make it 15. Some examples are Julio Cesar Chavez, Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, and others. As far as weight cutting goes, a same day weigh in should just mean a fighter doesn't cut too much weight. There too our improved knowledge of physiology and rehydration allows for improved weight cutting practices. Some athletes place too much emphasis on cutting weight anyway. Back in the 80's the Soviets were the best wrestlers in the world, and they cut far less weight than we Americans.

Es verdad, eso por regla es considerado "descalificación" o cuando menos "deducción" de un punto en ese "round", fue un acto cobarde de A. Nelson, ya que Salvador Sánchez resbaló en su esquina por el agua derramada ahí. Pero al final lo "tumbó" en el 15.º. episodio (así como ya lo había hecho en el 7.º) ya estaba por caer por segunda vez en ese último round y el "referí" paró la pelea muy oportunamente. A pesar de la velocidad y excelente condición física de azuma, Salvador Sanchez la verdad que chingona técnica tenía y aguante, me quito el sombrero por este peleador y posiblemente el mejor boxeador de la historia de México.

Today's fighters couldn't hang with either of these men. 15 hard rounds. Azumah Nelson fought to the last seconds making the late Salvador Sanchez empty his boxing arsenal. GREAT FIGHT!
Considering Nelson was a last minute substitute, who accepted the fight with 2 weeks notice. This was supposed to be a walk in the park for Sanchez and he nearly lost his belt.

Nelson was a freak: very fast, and he had a lot of stamina and an incredible fighting spirit. Sanchez looked confused during the first 5 rounds. After the 6 he realized that the only way to win was to keep calm, be precise, shorten the distance, and just endure the punishment until Nelson gassed out, which it happened. Sanchez knew his cardio was better. He also knew his combos, although not as fast as Nelson's, were heavier. In my opinion, Sanchez is the best boxer of all time, the second one is Chavez.
Certainly potentially the best. Fate took him away too soon. His next fight was going to be vs Alexis Arguello another all time great. If he had beaten Alexis in fine style then his place in the pantheon of best fighters ever would have been firmly established. So sad he never got another 5 years to prove it taking on and beating all comers. And I think he would have beaten them all. I rate Alexis as a GREAT fighter so if I think Salvador would have beaten him I cannot rate him higher than that.

What a great fight , Azumah had only 10 profesional sights and was only a last minute fill in and produce one of the greatest fights off all time. I have to say when a Mexican and Ghanaian box it always produces great contests , De la Hoya vs Quartey comes to mind. Azumah always had high regards to Sanchez a true legend, boxing finnese master.He schooled him on how to be a Champion, what it takes. Upon his sad demise Azumah was at his grave and paid his respects to the legendary champion. He placed his fists in his grave and the rest is history becoming a great champion. Sanchez while always be remembered and gone to soon, may he rest in perfect peace.
De verdad que siempre que veo peleas del inmortal Salvador me asombra su calidad. Lo tenia TODO!!!!!!!!! resistencia, velocidad, elegancia y valentia. El mejor en toda la historia del boxeo Mexicano. Yo pensaba que su mejor pelea habia sido contra Gomez, pero viendo esta y despues la que tuvo Azumah contra Gomez donde lo despedazo, concluyo que la pelea de Gomez fue flan para Sanchez, esta fue la verdadera pelea donde demostro todo para vencer a este leon africano. Sal Sánchez ha sido el mejor pero murió muy joven y no pudo demostrar que fue el mejor libra por libra del mundo y de la historia. Pero Sánchez peleó contra puros buenos… Aguantaba más golpes que nadie, pegaba más fuerte que ninguno, boxeaba cuando tenía que boxear y se fajaba cuando tenía que hacerlo, un verdadero esgrimista del box... Calidad, golpeo, velocidad, contragolpe, estilo, alcance, elegancia… Creo que pocos lo llegamos a ver en acción… Descansa en paz.

Así es Jetzzael... Yo no creo que físicamente hubiera alcanzado esos pesos con la misma efectividad. ... Y también debes considerar que las personas que mencionas fueron boxeadores con un somatotipo diferente (más grandes). Tomy Hearns, Duran y Hagler, pasaban la báscula como walter y subían al cuadrilátero como medios o más pesados, es decir, fueron boxeadores que de alguna manera tenían la facilidad física, para vencer a la báscula, por eso se veían tan poderosos.
La mayoría de los aficionados no entienden este concepto, y aparte de que muchos peleadores se prestan a esta gran farsa, el Canelo VS Ch JR es un vivo ejemplo, el Jr va a llegar increíblemente deshidratado y por consecuencia nunca podrá ser una pelea de poder a poder

Nelson went 18-0 with 14 KOs in the following 8 years after being defeated by Sanchez until finally losing again to Whitaker in 1990. Nelson was never stopped in his career besides when Sanchez stopped him. Salvador Sanchez was the greatest Mexican Fighter of all time.

I am not disagreeing with you, but unfortunately Sanchez did not live long enough to make that statement absolutely true. He may have proven it if not for his early demise, but i think that fact cheated himself from being called the best ever. I reserve the title of greatest Mexican fighter of all time for Julio Chavez personally . His record up until his final few years proves it in my humble opinion. It is a terrible shame that Sanchez did not have the opportunity to prove his place as the greatest. He may have done it if given the chance.

And must also say that he could be the best featherweight (if not the best boxer) that ever wore them gloves! He's got it all for crying out loud! -discipline, composure, class, strength, offense, defense, counter punching, boxing, slugging, power and high boxing IQ. I remember when I heard the news that he died, ( I was 22) ...a part of me died also....and even up to this time I can't help but regret that he did not live long enough to show us that he could have been even greater, which i believe he would have! Nelson's confindence and Ali's shuffle in the earlier rounds slowly began to disappear as the rounds went by, as he realized his punches were having absolutely no effect on Sánchez, like hitting concrete, and watching Salvador bouncing on his feet and with that cold poker face in the later rounds must have been a nightmare for Nelson. He was fighting an all time great, the best mexican fighter ever, the great Salvador Sánchez.
Nelson got tired at the later rounds because he took the fight on a short notice after the original challenger withdrew, so Sanches came into this fight with better conditioning than Nelson and that showed at the tail end of the fight.

I am now 55 and remember this classic war in summer of 1982 I believe when I was 19 and was on CBS in those days FREE !! What a great post of these 2 LEGENDS !

Aquí esta la muestra más clara de que Salvador Sánchez ha sido el mejor boxeador de todos los tiempos, tenia el poder de Julio Cesar Chávez Sr, y el contragolpe de Juan Manuel Marquez, pero sobre todo, tenia una resistencia que jamás he visto en otro boxeador, además de que se adaptaba al boxeador, y al final los hacia caer en su estilo

The action of Corrales Castillo was incredible and the drama was tremendous but both guys were second rate champions. Sanchez was the unquestioned top feather and Nelson didn't lose for another 8 years and 2 weight classes and it took a prime whitaker to do it. Top guys putting on action like this is superior IMO to good fighters doing it.

Pero Nelson tuvo 10 dias de aviso,ubiera querido miral con Nelson un poco mas aviso.
Lo que es increíble es que al ver la pelea te deja la sensación que el salvador podía seguir otros 5 rounds tirando madrazos, lo hacia ver tan fácil, no como el canelo que se cansa a media pelea y luego se va recuperando, este cabrón así como empezaba terminaba, se dedico a lo suyo a prepararse de forma espartana para cada pelea, por eso es un orgullo, a parte de tener todas las cualidades para ser uno de los mejores, su determinación y preparación estaban a un nivel completamente diferente, lo demostró en todas sus peleas, al principio le faltaba experiencia, pero una vez se consolidó, fue en ascenso meteórico derrotando a los históricos y los mejores de la época y de forma contundente, es decir nunca dejo dudas a nadie de su superioridad en el ring, al que le pusieras, se ganaba el respeto de sus rivales, lo que hace mas lamentable su accidente.

Salvador tenía el corazón de un caballo de carreras, que resistencia madre mía. Y una quijada que aguantaba bombazos, aunque medio se tambeleara 0.5 segundos después ya estaba focus de nuevo. Wow, two great fighters and one great fight. Azumah was not yet the polished fighter he was to become, but he was always the warrior. It is amazing to see him swing with even more ferocity every time his world gets rocked.
Sanchez, what can you say about Sanchez? He was so cool, so calm, confident and skilled. The economy of motion, ring generalship, and even power he displayed were masterful. They don't come any better than Sanchez.
Some people always believe the old time athletes were better. I tend to believe athletes have gotten better with time and advances in sport. The truly great ones would be great in any era though. Sanchez was one of those.

The same guys that can fight today (great ones) for 12 would've most likely been able to adapt to 15. It's the needs of the sport. Along with same day weigh ins.

@@3231bsln Yes, but even in the days of 15 round fights a fighter who had never been in a title fight would have to train for it the first time. The same goes for today's fighters. If they were expected to fight 15 rounds they could train for it. Our current knowledge of excercise physiology would give us an advantage.
I think the WBC went with 12 round Title fights around 1982 and the WBA followed in 1987. 12 round fights have been around a long time. There are plenty of fighters then and today who looked good enough after 12 rounds that you would have to bet on their ability to make it 15. Some examples are Julio Cesar Chavez, Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, and others.
As far as weight cutting goes, a same day weigh in should just mean a fighter doesn't cut too much weight. There too our improved knowledge of physiology and rehydration allows for improved weight cutting practices. Some athletes place too much emphasis on cutting weight anyway. Back in the 80's the Soviets were the best wrestlers in the world, and they cut far less weight than we Americans.

Es verdad, eso por regla es considerado "descalificación" o cuando menos "deducción" de un punto en ese "round", fue un acto cobarde de A. Nelson, ya que Salvador Sánchez resbaló en su esquina por el agua derramada ahí. Pero al final lo "tumbó" en el 15.º. episodio (así como ya lo había hecho en el 7.º) ya estaba por caer por segunda vez en ese último round y el "referí" paró la pelea muy oportunamente.

@@nelp.950 Como haya sido el caso, los 2 subieron en muy buenas condiciones, en su apogeo no sé si viste la pelea completa que por cierto estuvo buenísima y en todos los rounds se tiran con todo así que aunque le hayan avisado 10 días antes no quiere decir que apenas se puso a entrenar, así que no le quita ningún mérito a Salvador el ganó bien.

This was the first time I ever saw this fight! I remember both fighters and remember them fighting, but I didn't see until now! Great fight. Today's fighters couldn't hang with either of these men. 15 hard rounds. Azumah Nelson fought to the last seconds making the late Salvador Sanchez empty his boxing arsenal. GREAT FIGHT!
Considering Nelson was a last minute substitute, who accepted the fight with 2 weeks notice. This was supposed to be a walk in the park for Sanchez and he nearly lost his belt.

Nelson was a freak: very fast, and he had a lot of stamina and an incredible fighting spirit. Sanchez looked confused during the first 5 rounds. After the 6 he realized that the only way to win was to keep calm, be precise, shorten the distance, and just endure the punishment until Nelson gassed out, which it happened. Sanchez knew his cardio was better. He also knew his combos, although not as fast as Nelson's, were heavier. In my opinion, Sanchez is the best boxer of all time, the second one is Chavez.

Certainly potentially the best. Fate took him away too soon. His next fight was going to be vs Alexis Arguello another all time great. If he had beaten Alexis in fine style then his place in the pantheon of best fighters ever would have been firmly established. So sad he never got another 5 years to prove it taking on and beating all comers. And I think he would have beaten them all. I rate Alexis as a GREAT fighter so if I think Salvador would have beaten him I cannot rate him higher than that.

What a great fight , Azumah had only 10 profesional sights and was only a last minute fill in and produce one of the greatest fights off all time.
I have to say when a Mexican and Ghanaian box it always produces great contests , De la Hoya vs Quartey comes to mind.
Azumah always had high regards to Sanchez a true legend, boxing finnese master.He schooled him on how to be a Champion, what it takes. Upon his sad demise Azumah was at his grave and paid his respects to the legendary champion. He placed his fists in his grave and the rest is history becoming a great champion.

De verdad que siempre que veo peleas del inmortal Salvador me asombra su calidad. Lo tenia TODO!!!!!!!!! resistencia, velocidad, elegancia y valentia. El mejor en toda la historia del boxeo Mexicano. Yo pensaba que su mejor pelea habia sido contra Gomez, pero viendo esta y despues la que tuvo Azumah contra Gomez donde lo despedazo, concluyo que la pelea de Gomez fue flan para Sanchez, esta fue la verdadera pelea donde demostro todo para vencer a este leon africano. Sal Sánchez ha sido el mejor pero murió muy joven y no pudo demostrar que fue el mejor libra por libra del mundo y de la historia. Pero Sánchez peleó contra puros buenos… Aguantaba más golpes que nadie, pegaba más fuerte que ninguno, boxeaba cuando tenía que boxear y se fajaba cuando tenía que hacerlo, un verdadero esgrimista del box... Calidad, golpeo, velocidad, contragolpe, estilo, alcance, elegancia… Creo que pocos lo llegamos a ver en acción… Descansa en paz.

... Y también debes considerar que las personas que mencionas fueron boxeadores con un somatotipo diferente (más grandes).
Tomy Hearns, Duran y Hagler, pasaban la báscula como walter y subían al cuadrilátero como medios o más pesados, es decir, fueron boxeadores que de alguna manera tenían la facilidad física, para vencer a la báscula, por eso se veían tan poderosos.
La mayoría de los aficionados no entienden este concepto, y aparte de que muchos peleadores se prestan a esta gran farsa, el Canelo VS Ch JR es un vivo ejemplo, el Jr va a llegar increíblemente deshidratado y por consecuencia nunca podrá ser una pelea de poder a poder

@@tobiasbasilio166 en mi opinion a Azumah Nelson Julio Cesar Chavez se lo hubiera comido Azumah era muy bravo y entron confiando en su excelente resistencia pero con una tecnica muy pobre recibia muchos golpes en cambio Chavez tenia una tecnica magistral en comparacion con un muy buen cabeceo y sobre todo una cintura increible que lo hacia esquivar cualquier cantidad de golpes lo mejor en cuslquier pelea cuando se va a recibir un golpe es no estar ahi esto aunado a su gran trabajo al cuerpo y golpeo continuo lo hacia una maquina imparable de te pego pero no me puedes pegar ademas e tener muy buena quijada tambien claro antes de que cayera en los excesos y las drogas contra Salvador Sanchez esa si es otra historia ya que Salvador era muy inteligente para boxear y encontrar como acabar con sus rivales en mi opinion esa pelea seria como ver un Marquez vs Pacquio de la actualidad Marquez con su depurada tecnica fina gran pegada y sobre todo mucha inteligencia y Pacquio con su excelente resistencia a los golpes velocidad y trabajo de golpeo incesante y bueno ya vimos cual era el resutado de esos enfrentamientos tremendas peleas muy parejas pero siempre con Marquez mejor y finalmente noqueando a Pacquiao gracias a su inteligencia asi que yo pienso que habria ganado Salvador Sanchez igual gracias a su inteligente boxeo en tremenda pelea muy cerrada
