Acts 8:34 So the eunuch answered Philip and said, "I ask you, of whom does the prophet say this, of himself or of some other man?"
The way the Ethiopian leader read the Scriptures was excellent. He read it by keeping the context in mind. He knew that it was Prophet Isaiah writing about a certain person at a certain time in history, but he did not know who the content was about.
Some people approach the Scriptures as though they contain philosophical and spiritual statements, which they can take for themselves and live by. We come across such statements and sentences made by individuals, which we quote. We expect the Scriptures to be a compendium of such statements.
The Scriptures are grounded in history, with people, and their lives, which includes all of it, not just their good side but also the not so good. The Scriptures are a revelation of the engagement of God with man and creation. The Scriptures reveal to us the character of God and His love for us.
