There is no coincidence to the level of success in which you had as a band when you see the thought process behind these songs. From what I hear from Daniel and yourself the attention to detail is astounding whilst remaining modest. This song especially shows the evolution and restraint of the band, it’s the notes you don’t play which strikes me as a key feature in all the great artists over the years, and Silverchair were/are one of the great artists.
I was 3 years old when Young Modern came out (yes... im just 18) but I have an interesting story about it... I remember waking up during the night, and walked out into our lounge room. I turned on the TV and Rage was on, and it just so happened that they were airing the music video for Straight Lines. I just stood there watching the music video, and the song has been with me ever since. This was 15 years ago so I can't remember much, but it's one of my favourite songs of all time.
Watching your progression as an artist and your drumming style through the years has always been inspiring to me. Thanks for sharing these videos! Very much looking forward to more.
This is awesome! My favorite Silverchair drum memory was hearing you live at Portland, Oregon for the YM tour. Your Black Sabbath-esque fills in The Lever were so huge. The whole room felt alive!
hello Ben I am from Costa Rica, thank you to continúe, being a gread artist always will be, My favorite band. Thank you for having been part of, Silverchair, I do not lose the hope to see them together again, a pleasure to listen to your talent🙏👍
All 3 of these videos are fantastic. Great to hear this insight into how these drum parts took shape. I hope you can do a video on “emotion sickness”. Cheers!
Playing these songs on the kit again must be bittersweet for you but this behind the scenes walkthrough is much appreciated so thank you! I can’t think of a single Silverchair song where the drum parts did anything but unify the music and melodies. You’re a real talent and influential drummer Ben - reminiscent of Dave Grohl and his ability to give Nirvana’s songs a similar and memorable momentum.
What Kurt said. Every word of it. Your signature style is as essential as Grohl to Nirvana, Adler to early Guns, Sorum to later Guns, Tre to Green Day or Kinney to AiC.
Always loved drumming but you were my first drum idol. Used to play along to your young modern live shows all the time in my lounge room. Loving all this detail you and can are producing atm.
Thank you Ben for breaking these down. Watching you all grow through the years is amazing and I hope one day you all can find peace and preform again or even just get together.. My father is a musician and he broke his band up in 87 and they all never play with each other except my dad's lead guitar player.. He joined a band and they happened to need a bass player he called my dad and my dad's Been with them ever since.. Unfortunately his best friend ( the lead guitar player died 6 months after my dad joined on my birthday in 1991)...My dad out of them all is the only one who continues and continued to play.. I find it sad but it has nothing to do with BS just others moved into their life's, when my dad continued to do his passion even to this day !! I'd hate to see the same thing happen with you Mates!! They have jammed separately together but not together... I'm not saying this as a fan just as a human and getting people back together.. Love you all!!
This is an amazing series Ben. Thank you for sharing, and going so in depth with your beat creation. This gives me an even bigger appreciation for Silverchair’s music.
These are super fun, Ben! Didn't realize that you were not really a fan of using a click, but I totally get it. If there are more of these in the future, I'd like to humbly request "Without You", I try to tap my fingers along with that one, and the beat always catches me off guard. Also, an option to watch the full playthrough would be cool.
Thank you so much for sharing, Ben. I found this really insightful! It always amazes me how a song like Straight Lines can still throw surprises up after so many listens. Loving the vids and your recent material mate!
Hi Ben. Wow. I really like these video series. I hope you will do some more Silverchair songs in the future.the new drum tracks sound really high quality. Love your drumming and all the extra information about each track and the recording days. Thank you so much for this series. Stay safe and healthy my friend. Greetings :)
Really enjoyed watching all your videos. I appreciate all the bits of information you give. I like that you’re breaking down each part and explaining. But I would enjoy listening to a full play through at the end. Also, would really like to see some content from Neon Ballroom: Paint Pastel Princess, Black Tangled Heart, Emotion Sickness. All have excellent grooves and great cymbal work! Regardless, keep the content coming.
The drums really make this song special. It's a catchy song, but Ben really made this song better with the way he approached the drums here. Love these videos, Ben!
It's good to see you revisiting this stuff, especially the breakdowns. I was just listening to Johns' new album, Emergency Calls Only sounds like a Chair track.. Then there's the new take on Freak 🤷♂
Very cool to see! If I ever get my silverchair tribute band back together, now I'll know how to approach it. We only played 2 shows, so Straight Lines wasn't one we had learned yet. It was so fun trying to perfect your parts. No Association was a bugger to memorize for sure! Can't wait to see what else you have in store for us.
Great upload again, certainly enjoying these. Suggestions for drum tracks i'd love to see; Satin Sheets, Petrol & Chlorine, Steam will Rise, Madman. Also would love to hear your perspective as a drummer about your B-side tracks and some of the punk rock covers Silverchair have recorded over the years.
Inspiring stuff Ben. You guys were the soundtrack to my youth. Having only picked up drums about 5 years ago, your videos give the songs a whole new dynamic and level of appreciation! Thanks for doing them. (They’re gonna work as great tutorials too!)
@@BenGillies888 mate; hope you can do some more of these videos (when you have time); they are not only interesting, but helpful in understanding what you are doing in the songs .. with much respect 🙏🏼🎶 🥁
Great tune. I enjoy the way you explain your process. It shows how much boiling down and thought goes a seemingly simple drum part over a complex sounding arrangement. The end result is a very natural, flowing and cohesive(to the song) sounding drum part. Really like the intro click on click off use too. On ya Ben! R
Beautiful kit. Your tom positioning and tuning is intriguing. Not sure if it's been explained elsewhere but I'd be interested in hearing an explanation as to why! This was a happy accident to stumble onto your channel. Been a fan since day 1.

Hi Ben, this is a fantastic series and as a bit of a music nerd, I love it. Can I ask - how did you manage the evolution in Daniel's writing, as he moved from heavy rock into more operatic orchestration, and then a far more pop-driven sound? I assume that there's a divergence of taste at some point there - and it's not an unfamiliar challenge for most people in bands, having to work through differences in what you want to play.
A truly complex song with simple drum parts. But that's the beauty: have the feeling to deliver what music needs! For some people YM is an ok/bad album. I myself had difficulties to assimilate It on firts auditions. But It's a great album, Full of creativity! I'd love to see/hear more from It!
