    John apparently traveled with a photo of Eric Dolphy after Eric's sudden death in 1964. He would hang the photo up in his hotel rooms on tour. The two had been more than collaborators. They were very close friends.

    There is an official version of this show (along w/a couple of tunes from Miles band w/o Miles in '60). Don't buy it. It runs ridiculously slow. Don't know how that messed that up when the FM broadcast (this one) is available. This is also on the bootleg 'Live Trane'. It's vol. 5. Can anyone get enough of Coltrane/Dolphy? I cannot imagine it.

    Great live set early in the existence of this fine but short lived quintet. The band is Trane, Dolphy, McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman, and Elvin Jones. Everyone is in fine form, especially Dolphy and Elvin. Much more accessible than some of their later work. Sound is more satisfying if you can use a graphic equalizer to boost the highs a bit. I did 2 kHz +5, 4 kHz +6.5, and 8 kHz +14.

    So what/Impressions is, i now get, the final break-away from the 6-chord, and the moment of birth of 'post' modern jazz... Dolphy is struggling in his own way with two tonic minors a half-step apart (they are a whole step apart in 'summertime'... ) while 'trane is absolutely blistering in the midnite sun....

    maybe 'trane wanted to resolve the post-'59 jazz crisis and get back to the 'six' for his 'older' audience so he chose songs to exaggerate the pentatonic with the 6 and we get 'My favourite things'... maybe Dolphy was more of an influence on trane than I thought...

    McCoy Tyner plays "My Favorite things" a bit differently here than on the well known album.
    Dolphy had a penchant for playing outside the key that he was in. Coltrane liked him but it must have occasionally felt uncomfortable when Dolphy did little more than squeaking. Coltrane did it too but not to excess.

    • @emilianoturazzi
      @emilianoturazzi 4 года назад +3

      "but it must have occasionally felt uncomfortable when Dolphy did little more" I think not. Coltrane was (rightfully) very high on Dolphy....
