  • Simon Whitlock is quite often at the forefront of controversy when it comes to the use of points. After looking at some old Reddit posts I found that he actually used ground down Allen keys to make his points. I thought of a way of being able to make the points with basic tools most people have laying around at home and I wanted to show you guys the method of making them in this how to video!

Well done, goes to show what you can pull off without a ton of tools. You can use a bit of string to measure the diameter of the point, wrap it around, draw a line, measure the line and divide by pi to get the diameter.
That exposed carbon steel is going to rust as well. You can do a cold-blue to really protect it well with a black oxide layer, it's marketed as gun blue. You can also slightly darken a barrel but I've not found a process that gets me a consistent and non-patchy darkening unfortunately.
I've had to turn down jobs requesting sets of those point because the tolerances are stupid tight. For a press fit into a 2.300mm reamed hole you're going to want to be +0.020/+0.060mm or you'll have an interference fit or no fit at all. Using a bench grinder and a drill to keep that part of the shaft concentric is solid.
You're killing me with that tape rule! Not sure what your plans are for the future but getting even a cheap set of calipers and a 0-1" (0-25mm) micrometer will help you get some accurate measurements on darts you might be testing.

Thanks so much for this! This was exactly the comment I was looking for from someone! I never even thought of the string what a fantastic idea! I'm gonna make another set soon so I'm gonna try the vinegar method also!
Haha what is tolerance ;) bodgit and scarper! Joking aside I can imagine how tight they are but I was just trying to demonstrate a simple way around! As I mentioned I'm useless at this sort of stuff but I sort of thought of a way that it could make it work with the equipment I've got! I might invest in the calipers and micrometers do you think you could possible point me in the right direction to some budget options? Thanks so much for the insight and tips! I really appreciate it!
      Ross

@@ClashOfTheTungsten No worries at all. It'll still be rough to get an exact measurement with the string but it'll get you pretty close.
I was wrong about the vinegar, that's going to create rust (red oxide/Fe2O3) vs the black oxide you're looking for (Fe3O4). I've used it to oxidize aluminum, my mistake.
These are the exact tools I started with ages ago, they're shockingly accurate for the price. The micrometer is dead nuts on my certified Mitutoyo mic. You can definitely get away with just a caliper. Rule of thumb is a measuring device is only as accurate as the second most significant digit (so 5.987mm I'd trust to 5.98mm). I tend to use a caliper on length measurements (except final check) and micrometer on diameter checks.

Thanks Anthony! Are you sure you are watching my video as you used the word consistent! I am playing dreadful at the moment I've got so much work to do on my throw as I stopped playing during lockdown ( I was still working throughout it) but hopefully with practice my form will improve! Thanks for your kind words buddy glad you enjoyed it!

Interesting to see how they turned out and with a bit more practice I would imagine they could come out really nice. It would also be interesting to see a follow up video to see the damage done to your board. Nice one! 👍🎯

I wish you could buy dart points with a flat edge like allen keys. It's much nicer to rest my finger on, easier control.
