- Demon's Souls Lore - Boletaria and its King Allant
Today it's finally time to go over the largest player of Demon's Souls - Boletaria. The King Allant dynasty would sweep the lands, and eventual their hunger for power would tip the scales and lead to a lust for the Soul Arts and power. I'll discuss the Oolan, the Phalanx, Alfred, the Tower Knight, and Metas, the Penetrator, and how I believe they came to become major demons. So, let's talk some Boletaria Lore!

I hope you enjoy my Demon's Souls Lore video!
7:00 Oh man, that Majula theme never really gets old. Maybe one of the best parts of Dark Souls II.
I think it’s less likely that Metas, Alfred, and Oolan willingly became demons or accepted demon’s souls, and more likely that they were made demons against their will by King Allant (who also replaced himself with a demon, too, bearing his form).
My reasoning for this is admittedly conjecture, but it seems to me to be a consistent trend throughout the game that NPCs ONLY become (red) Black Phantoms when they die with immense regret or some intensely important task they were unable to fulfill. For instance, Garl Vinland will be dead (presumably suicide) and becomes a Black Phantom immediately if you return to 5-3 after slaying his Maiden Astrea; his dying words in combat are: “Dearest Astrea, I’ve failed you.” Ostrava, who was on a quest to meet with his father and dispel the false rumors (from his perspective) that his father is a demon and responsible for the waking of the Old One; kills himself and becomes a Black Phantom after failing his quest to redeem Allant, and realizing the rumors were right.
Rydell and Selen Vinland become Black Phantoms in black world tendency ONLY where the player character does not help them achieve their goals (i.e., to die beside the token of Rydell’s dead wife, and to find out what happened to her brother Garl Vinland, respectively). But in white world tendency, where you help them, and they accomplish their tasks, they do not become Black Phantoms.
NPCs who die under noble/normal circumstances do not become Black Phantoms. A few examples to mention - Vallorfax does not become a Black Phantom, as he succeeded in bringing help to the kingdom (his corpse and gear are found in 1-1 near Executioner Miralda). Biorr does not become a Black Phantom, since he held onto his valor and humanity until the end, and vanquished the Penetrator, even if he dies fighting the Blue Dragon, as he creates a distraction long enough to allow you to reach the king. In other words, they died noble deaths, and did not become Phantoms. The Crestfallen Warrior in the Nexus does not become a Black Phantom ... he simply fades away (much like his own will to fight on).
So dying with intense regret or failed task seems to me to be intrinsically linked to who becomes a Black Phantom.
I think the fact that Metas, Alfred, and Oolan can ALL be found as Black Phantoms, still standing guard together, suggests - but does not exactly prove - that they WERE still the noble knights of the round table that Ostrava and Biorr believe they were, and they suffered immense regret in failing to save their kingdom. Or by having been made Demons, against their will. Since if they had been willing participants in Allant’s scheme/deception they presumably would have rested easily, and not become Black Phantoms.
Just my theory. But it would seem to fit with the themes of the game - which is that it is not necessarily the Soul Arts themselves that are evil, but the lust for power that is. It is Allant who was the true villain, by lusting for more and more power, and succumbing to his own nihilism.
Although this theory is good it has a flaw in my opinion, i dont think King allant wanted to "become a demon" as you said, he simply wanted to kill the old one or had an imense lust for power, and that power was one he didnt understand. We can find allant in the old one and we end his suffering and get the soulbrandt so the demon fake king allant wasnt one that allant wanted there but it made sure all the blame came on too the king. I dont think allant wanted to become that slug thing, if you are right tho and he wanted to become a demon it wasnt sucsesfull. Just my theory tho
Allant 100% is a Nihilist who wants humanity to die out in order to end all suffering
That’s pretty interesting, and it makes a lot of sense. Another theory I’ve heard is that each area’s religion became its demons. Valley of Defilement is obvious, since its denizens actively worship Astraea, much to the Beggar Lady’s chagrin. Stonefang worshiped the dragon bones, and hence Dragon God was born from them. While I can’t really explain Storm King, Adjudicator seemed to judge the fate of the dead and held some religious significance to the Shadowmen. The Fool’s Idol is a source of false hope for the prisoners of Latria, and even resembles the late queen.
Maybe the demons seen for Metas, Alfred, and Oolan weren’t actually them, but representations of the faith Boletarians had in them? This could play into the divine right of kings, where it was believable God had bestowed the crown onto the kings. This would further explain the demons Flamelurker, Fool’s Idol, and False Allant since each where the rulers of their kingdoms. Back to the three knights, maybe they were like the knights of the round table, and their valor was so great the people revered them as if the were divine. This is all conjecture though, and a good excuse to talk about DeS.
King Allant, our favorite demon slug

i realize it's kinda off topic but does anyone know a good website to stream new movies online?
@Marcelo Jamari I watch on FlixZone. You can find it by googling :)
@@marcelojamari9407 I pay for films and movies because I'm not a crook and a felon.
Am I the only one who hated Allant after finding out that he basically ruined his kingdom and was essentially the cause of his son’s suicide?
Ostrava was my friend, man. After he killed himself, I was so upset and pissed at Allant. Like, dude you basically just got bored and woke up the Old One to get some power and it messed everything up. “Local man ruins everything” fits well here. Rip Ostrava :(
That Majula theme out of nowhere, the pure nostalgia man...
And then soul of fire at the end...
Pure white nostalgia
I'm less inclined to believe that Northern Regalia represents a supposed balance, considering that the item description itself claims that the weapon was 'left behind by a malicious force'. A malicious force implies that whatever entity created the sword didn't exactly have wholesome intentions for it.
As it’s “believed” to be left my a malicious force, I didn’t take it as a definite. But that certainly is a good point!
I don't know. Balance isn't always a peaceful act nor is it mentioned that humans really help or are needed with that balance.
The malicious intent could be the fact that very few humans can reach “pure white” so it would get more powerful with more “blackness”, leading people to commit evil acts for power.
The “Malicious force” is implied to be God. Who created mankind, then created the Old One to destroy Mankind, then created the Northern Regalia as a kind of Emergency reset button mankind could use for good or evil.
It wasn't left by a malicious force, that's a mistake in translation. The original Japanese states it was "left due to malice". Therefore, it was an external malice what triggered (implicitly God) to leave the Old One and the Regalia. Most likely, human malice
Personally I prefer the theory of demons taking the form of local deities, supernatural creatures or heroes(in the knight's case or with the old hero)...things people believed in, making it easier for them to hunt and terrorize them. Logically speaking, if the king is a demonic impostor, wouldn't it be logical to recreate the original's subjects in his image?
Fair point! I thought maybe you face the black phantoms after defeating their corporeal form, similar to how we fight a black phantom Ostrava after his corporeal form dies.
To support this theory, Sage Freke says he only knows of three humans who've become demons; Allant, Astraea and the Old Monk. So he either he's completely unaware that the Tower Knight and Penetrator demons exist, or knows that those demons aren't really the knights.
I thought that the black phantoms we encountered of the three Boletarian heroes were the real ones, and the demons we fought were impressions of them. Not the actual person morphed into a demon. Like how King Allant's demon impression was at the top of the palace. And how the demons in the Shrine of Storms were impressions of mythological figures from the inhabitants' religion. It is also loose on what defines a "demon" exactly. A player character could become a "demon" depending on the ending, invaders are labeled as demons as well. The effects of demon souls also differ, as Maiden Astrea is able to utilize one to ease the suffering of those in the valley of defilement. And seems to be holding it. So maybe the demon souls are neutral, but used in destructive ways because of innate human curruption. And the effects and uses of them vary. A combination of human will and the will of the Old One perhaps.
I think a demon can be defined as one who uses the soul arts and collects/consumes souls as of the game time. In this sense, the player is a demon no matter what choices they make unless they never level up. Black phantoms hunt for souls, and therefore are demons as well.
That King's Field song remix starting at 14:04 was awesome. I could listen to that loop for hours, like the OG.
My theory behind the legendary heroes is that, while one got away, the others had their soul extracted to create the bosses that stood in the way. They are unaware of it because they cannot control themselves in their bossly forms. Additionally, the husks of those same heroes were given life using purely demonic souls, and the demons within were able to learn the former user's combat skills via possession.
So how exactly did the northern regalia split? It seems that the swords had been split long enough for their original form to be forgotten, and for legends to tell of two swords rather than 1. Further, the sword's reforging requires a form of the soul arts, thus I would think that splitting them would require knowledge of the soul arts as well.
I think after watching all of your Demon's Souls vids thus far that you're probably my favorite 'lore guy' on RUclips. These are great, good quality, you paint a clear picture and weave a clear narrative, and your speaking style is easy to follow so keep up the awesome work. Umbasa.
Imagine if such a kingdom existed in real life...
3:19 The excalibur is tied to a kinship of a land.
A land.
Allant.

I dont remember where i heard it but Rydell was King allant the twelths younger brother and Ariona (Ostrava) lived with rydell and when he heard the rumours of boletaria he went there to talk to his father and to see if the rumours were true. But as we know their fates were not good ones, so perhaps on their journey to boletaria they passes through latria and Rydell ultimatly died and ostrava barley escaped.
Every single time I start watching these videos I instantly wanna play and I do lol. I love them they are absolutely fantastic
Finally got the chance to lie down and watch this! The lore video I was most hyped for!
Mephistopheles also uses soulsucker, maybe just the ones who grew enough absorbing the souls have this power. Or maybe can be shared, if the maiden in black shared her soul with you so king allant possibly did the same for mephistopheles.
And thank you for your videos, they are very good and i always learn something. Also think your voice are very cosy.
Gives me conniptions!!
My man! Wishing you the best from ur native Chicago!
Thank you! Hope Chicago isn’t too freezing right now, haha
I'm a little late but I just got out of work and saw this, thank you Dave! Can't get enough of your great content!
Excalibur was not the Sword in the Stone. The Lady in the Lake gave Arthur Excalibur after the Sword from the Stone broke.
I honestly think Demon’s Souls lore is cooler than Dark Souls lore
Seriously though to anyone new that comes across this channel Dave's other content like his Super Shows which I personally recommend, are spectacular. As for this video itself, I don't really have anything to add but Allant sure does make Gwyn look like a saint in comparison.
A quick note on Ostrava: He probably didn't kill himself. In the original Demon's Souls, Ostrava dies in one hit from anything in 1-4, similar to the lethally wounded Oscar in Dark Souls. Additionally, in the Remake, Ostrava is covered in blood, similar to players who have taken damage. As such, the False King probably kicked his butt. Regarding the Fat Officials, they likely tormented Boletaria before the arrival of the False King. Once the False King arrived leading a demonic army against Boletaria, that was the start of the Second Scourge, and the False King probably only resided atop the King's Tower after successfully conquering the Boletarian Palace. Finally, in regard to the Northern Regalia's origins, the fan translator Lokey_DS recently posted a detailed look at Demon's Souls' Japanese text involving the sword and God's intentions on his blog, so it might provide additional insight as to the sword's significance.
Thanks for once again shining a spotlight on my favorite Souls game!
Personally, I don't think Ostrava's comments about the greatness of his kingdom are unfounded even if the dreglings were slaves. In a historical context, much of nobility was unfortunately very used to the concept and wouldn't have seen it as inherently wrong.
So the narrator at the beginning says valerfax left and biorr stayed. But then Ostrava says the reverse. I don’t think this is coincidence or mistake, something fishy happened
It is especially strange given the remake can repair known mistakes and errors. But on the second hand it doesn't change anything if either Ostrava or the world were deceived, combined with lack of anybody's motive to create such lie. So I guess it is "the same" prank as the pendant in Dark Souls.
Another great way to start my day. Thanks for the informative Lore video!. Hope you're having a fantastic New Year!
Thank you, I am! Hope you are too!
They really downplayed the fact that Boletaria is basically a Xerxes like empire that keeps slaves in the remake.
This theme would come up again in Dark Souls 3 where 3 dynasties, Anor Londo, Irithyll and Lothric all practiced slavery.
"Errant" is likely the same meaning as "Knights-Errant" meaning he was likely a questing wanderer.
I don't think the Tower Knight, Penetrator, or Phalanx are the actual heroes of Boletaria. We know that the demons take the form of legends/ideas from the area in which they invade. Take for example the Shrine of Storms. There, the Demons take the form of the Adjudicator, which is clearly a mythical creature, not somebody real.
I think the knights were defeated, and the demons took the appearance of their "mythological" selves.
great point
Love your videos, these take a lot of effort I can tell. Here’s to 100k subs soon 😁👍
Was hoping you would speculate as to the backstory of the Phalanx character. Whom I think is a royal who escaped as a child and lived somewhere they had curved swords.
Ladies and gentlemen, Old King Doran.. uh, I love your blade.
Now something good to listen to while finishing fire emblem three houses
Great game!!
This part of the story really reminds me of Berserk
GRIFFITHHHH!!
R.I.P MIURA : (
love your videos dave!!! even the super shows!!!
Do you have a link to the song Kings Field - passage to a old monk (hellkite drake remix)?
Another great lore video!
I think that perhaps the three knights were tricked by the demon king allant stealing their souls turning them into husks and using their souls to impower three demons to protect him
What I never understood was why False King Allant and Real King Allant both have Soulbrandt. Is it possible that False King is a projection from Real King under the Nexus and is under the Real King's control and the blade flows through him or is it a fluke?
I think it's a part of the fake.
Bloodborne and demons souls surely are in the same universe, there are just many connections with both games, specially with the umbasa phrase and the great ones
Just a thought: could the "witch in the sky" refer to the Ivory Queen of Latria? No real evidence on my end, just that Rydell is imprisoned in Latria and the Ivory Tower reaches into the heavens.
I always assumed the ‘little Allant’ nickname for Rydell referred more to his influence or agreement with Allant. Kind of like his right hand man as opposed to a direct relative. I would imagine that Rydell would have been the individual to see over the more pernicious aspects of Boletaria, reflecting Allants judgement and outlook where other members of the round table might not. I would say a historical parallel would be Dick Cheney to George Bush as an example.
Do you think that those knights who still swore fealty became demons while those who resisted kept their form (Biorr and Vallarfax)?
How do you get the dialogue from biorr about prince ostrava? Everytime i talk to him after freeing him and defeating penetrator, he only says beware the limits of your power
You have to free Biorr and then talk to him in the Nexus prior to defeating the Penetrator.
If Old King Doran is immortal does that make him a momumental, or does his immortality stem from his weapon?
Great video as always
It's definitely Uh-Lahnt
ty Dave.
I love listening to these like listening to stories (Also the dreglings shield looks like the pot lid from zelda botw XD both made of wood and not exactly the best shield to wield)
Is boletaria finished after the game ends because the royal family has been slaughtered probably most of the population has been slaughtered by the demons so it'll probably take decades maybe a hundred years for boletaria to recover
Mephistoles can also use Soulsucker
InsideAssassin2 ohhhhhhhhh, whoops. 😶
I think Big M use King Allant again on Bloodborne 1 of Ending :(
Actually, Demon’s Souls on the PS5 is a remake, not a remastered version of the original game.
Not only did demons souls get a remake old demons souls lore youtube videos are getting remakes
Never made any demons souls lore videos in the past.

Yeah, I honestly noticed I’d screwed up his pronunciation while I was editing... but was too lazy to re-record that part of the VO. (Don’t tell anyone).
@@DaveControlLive haha can’t blame you man! Honest mistakes :P great video tho
Dude it’s “hanged” not “hung”. Shame on you.
So more of the same lore you and vaat put like 3-7 years ago.
I didn’t start making Demon’s Souls lore videos until 2 months ago. I think Vaati only ever put out 3 videos way back whenever he did them.
720p 👎
I'm getting tired of people mispronouncing words in an attempt to sound smarter. It's pronounced re-gin, not re-shin, Al-aunt not Al-ant, (though I will let that one slide as the remake changed it compared to the original) everybody gets one
