    Astraea did indeed hold the most corrupted demon soul, but I think people misunderstand what that means. *She* was not corrupted, her *demon soul* was.
    Demons exist to satiate their own hunger by devouring souls. It’s an evil and selfish act. Astraea did devour the souls of those of the valley, but it was not an evil act. It truly was one of mercy.
    I believe this is why she’s simply holding her demon soul, not taking it into herself. It’s why she says “do what you will, I can no longer resist you” after you kill Garl. She’s supposedly an arch demon, she *should* be able to resist you. She cannot however, because she refuses to take that power into herself.
    Her good and noble heart “corrupted” the demon soul. This is made evident by the spell you get from trading in her soul to Yuria. Yuria believes her magic is “intrinsically evil” because it submits to and channels the evil nature and intentions of demon souls. What spell does her witchcraft produce from submitting to and channeling Astraea’s demon soul? An entirely selfless healing magic that can only work for the benefit of others.
    That’s why Astraea’s demon soul is “the most corrupted”. It was an evil soul that was turned into something good.
    Sorry I’m a few years late to the party, but I’m loving DeS and enjoying my exploration of the lore. Just wanted to point one perspective I haven’t seen discussed here so far.

    Something of note that was brought up in the playthrough on DaveControlPlay, is that most of the demons represent a regions lore. They are ultimately reflections of the place itself, rather than unique personages in their own right. Running with this logic gives some interesting findings.
    The demons of Boletaria are reflections of their greatest knights, and even the King is not the real king, but an illusory one designed to harvest souls, embodying Allant at his greatest strength and power. In a way, it is the idealized version of all the knights and king that is shown.
    Similarly with Stonefang, the demons represent ideas associated to the miners, such as the Armor Spider being a reflection of the Spiderstone and Hardstone mined there, the Flamelurker being a reflection of the Burrower kings who originated the art of smithing, and finally the Dragon God being an impersonation of the Dragon that the Burrowers worshiped.
    In the Tower of Latria the Fool's Idol is a cruel puppet designed to mimic the beloved Queen. She is beautiful, powerful, and ultimately, unkillable, likely echoing the desires of the people of Latria. The Maneater is an experimental demon created by the Old Monk, using the gift of knowledge and magic against the people. Even the Monk himself is a piece of folklore, someone banished by the Queen who nursed a hatred for her and was later used as a manner to gather souls. It doesn't even actually have to actually be the same Monk that was banished, because the demon is his clothes, not the man himself.
    The inhabitants of the Shrine of Storms have long since died off, yet the demons here mimic all aspects of the people's customs. The Adjudicator is there to judge the souls, before they are sent on to be ritually sacrificed to the Storm King. The Old Hero is one such sacrifice, and the Storm King himself representing the bringers of rain that the shadow men worshipped.
    The only one that is different is the Valley of Defilement, in that I believe that Astraea is the only demon to *literally* be the person in question, rather than a demon manifesting in a way sympathetic to the local peoples. It's also likely the actual Astraea by the presence of Garl Vinland, who is just a normal human. Remarkably strong, but still a normal mortal.
    Sorta adds a poetic spin to the line about hers being the single most corrupted soul.

    • @dezopenguin9649
      @dezopenguin9649 3 года назад +11

      Indeed! The closest analogy to Astraea is the player character themselves in the bad ending, where they choose to serve the Old One for power's sake, becoming a harvester of souls.

    • @TheSilverOrn
      @TheSilverOrn 3 года назад +15

      I'm unsure if they changed it, but in the original it was heavily implied that Astaea was in love with Garl Vinland and they had an illicit affair and she had to kill the baby in order to maintain the saintly aspects of her calling in front of the people. If you notice the blood in the last area is flowing out from her not into her, this is also the only place that has a pool of blood, and also the only place those babies appear. She also cups the demon soul as if it were a baby. It could be that she faced everything she had done and broke under the power of the demon soul and now keeps her baby alive by feeding it the souls of those suffering.

    • @blackbogdragon
      @blackbogdragon 3 года назад +4

      if we look at that logic though, along with the name itself, it's almost as if the Valley followed the same path that Astraea did. Starting of as "Pure" To only be tainted

    • @donogoodatgames
      @donogoodatgames 3 года назад +5

      @@TheSilverOrn that could be the reason why you get plagued so quickly in the pool at the bottom of her boss area. If it was her baby, surely it would be even more demonic than Astrea herself, especially when she is using all of the valleys residents for their souls.

      @possumverde 2 года назад

      It's actually started out as a very derogatory term. It came about because the inbreeding of nobles in Europe and Russia back in the day left many nobles suffering from hemophilia. It prevents the blood from clotting properly and thus leads to those afflicted often being very bruised even from minor accidents... and bruises are made of "blue" blood.

    • @playmsbk
      @playmsbk 2 года назад +3

      @@possumverde what I've heard is different. Since the nobles wouldn't be out working the fields they'd be much paler than the peasants leading to visible veins which have a blueish hue, adding to this the fact that bleeding would be customarily avoided by nobles due to the fear of hemophilia, the common folk speculated that nobles had blue blood.

    Garl Vinland has some very interesting equipment. He's wearing the Dark Silver set and the Shield, improving his defense against magic. The Talisman of God, allowing him to cast miracles, the miracles Heal and God's Wrath. God's Wrath showing miracles can do harm, even if it might be more of a defensive offensive miracle. His Bramd has marks of an old giant killer, likely from the 6th archstone, also increasing resistance against plague and poison. The old lady, her missing child, likely in the 6th archstone.
    Also interesting, if you kill the maiden without killing Garl, you can reload the save and Garl will die and drop his equipment. You never really need to fight him, and it's like he sudoku when she dies. If the boss was just over, he may just be gone or a dead body when you return, but you actually get to see him die.
    His sister is "high-ranking" from the "highlands" (see her armor).

    Im sure the whole ''the most corrupted of them all'' was cause she turned her back on god since heresy was punishable in the middle ages.
    Also in the og game Astraea is surrounded by gold, so the depraved also were showering her with trinkets.
    Theres was also a neat theory that the black phantom wielding a meat clever is one of the knights.

    • @personman1148
      @personman1148 3 года назад +3

      I think she's the most corrupted because her intentions were pure the others were sadistic already and already corrupted she used to be good but slowly became twisted.

    • @aliekexie8467
      @aliekexie8467 3 года назад

      @@personman1148 I dunno, compared to other demons she still retained her human form and ends herself after reposting Garl to the next dimension instead of running away like phalanx.

    • @MrDibara
      @MrDibara 3 года назад +4

      @@aliekexie8467 I believe that is due to a difference in personality. Phalanx is just a pure demon, only modelled as a mockery of the Boletarian legions. Like the other demons, it will always prioritize its survival so it can keep harvesting souls. It is almost an instinct, if backed up by cruelty.
      Astraea, however, used to be a person, a human being, and a very selfless and kind one. So even after having been corrupted and her desires to help twisted into just another form of feeding the Old One, Astraea still keeps most of her personality and values. Thus, when Garl Vinland is dead and her power about to be taken away, she kills herself, most likely because, unlike the other demons, she is devastated by the failure of her efforts _and_ she recognizes she's already lost to the Slayer of Demons.

    • @aliekexie8467
      @aliekexie8467 3 года назад

      @@MrDibara Except Boletarian demons were all human or do you want to say that King Allant always had a Tower Knight chilling at his court yard?
      I do believe the only pure demons are the Dragon God, Storm King and possibly the Old Hero. The rest looked like corrupted creatures, like The Armored Spider who probably grew thanks to the amount of people it devoured. The Adjucator looks kinda like The Old Monk with how the true foe is the bird crown and the other is the yellow cloth and not the actual person.
      If you want we can keep throwing possible theories about what are pure demons.

    • @MrDibara
      @MrDibara 3 года назад

      @@aliekexie8467 No, I'm saying all the Boletarian Demons simply took on a shape that mocked the humans they represented. The Tower Knight is a colossal demon that is mocking one of the true Heroes of Boletaria, now a Black Phantom near the corpse of a dragon.
      Same thing with the Penetrator. He himself is a mocking image of yet another of Boletaria's great Heroes, one who has also become a Black Phantom. And let's not forget even "Allant" himself is only a demon impersonating the king at his prime, albeit taller then any human would actually be.
      Hell, Biorr himself refers to the Penetrator as a mocking demon and this is the guy who is always singing high values of his comrades. That's a pretty big clue that the Penetrator is not actually the old Hero of Boletaria, but a mimicry, a demon disguising himself as such.
      Another example of a demon disguising itself is the Fool's Idol.
      It looks exactly like the Queen of Latria, but she is said to be dead. It only looks like the Queen to fool the unknowing prisoners.
      And some demons can apperantly also take shape through a culture's folklore. This would explain the Adjudicator demon, whose appearence is an imitation of the legends shared by the Shadowmen. He's not actually judging people who are worthy, the Shadowmen have been long gone. He's simply feeding on Thieves, Adventurers and Slayers of Demons that have ventured there.

I think she was succeeding in helping the people but as a holy woman akin to a nun she made the gravest sins she could do and laid with her knight. The self hatred and guilt of the act brought forth the power of the great old one and made her in the image she believes herself to be and that's the horror brought onto her. She became a demon and her knight still chose to love her regardless of the fact. This is why she begs for death once he is slain. I also don't think she was "evil", I do think she cared for them. I just find it more convincing that her way of easing their suffering was more ambiguously good/bad, as opposed to her being a purely good/positive person. It's a little more gray, as are a lot of things in the Souls games.

      @@DaveControlLive from the description of Death Cloud: "Astraea, who willingly accepted the corrupted and corroded, naturally became the most corrupted of them all." It's unclear who are the corrupted and corroded. The citizens of the valley? The old one?
      Also from Relief: "Spell from the Demon Maiden Astraea's Soul. Fully recover another by touching them. Though Astraea is the most impure demon of all, her works are equal to those of divine beings." The spell that is intended to cure someone by touching them and the citizens are in an area stricken by the plague.
      Another point is what is the corruption that these texts refer to? From the wiki "Shambling, pained and horrifically disfigured. The Depraved ones were once people, but discarded into the Valley of Defilement, living in putrid disease and decay, they are every bit as horrific as the valley itself." The creatures right there were deemed corrupted even before the demon fog struck the place. For me, Corrupted here is synonym with unift, unwanted. These ppl were discarded and Astrea took upon her to help them bc their wellbeing was greater than any belief in god or chuch. She was labeled as corrupted by the same church that sent man after man to retrieve her, not rescue her. These men souls fed her miracles.

       @Emanuel Príncipe Do you know where they got that quote from "Shambling, pained and horrifically disfigured."? I found it in the wiki's but can't find the actual source online or in my notes. (Just generally curious).
      I think - given relief - that it's true she tried to give relief, but I think you also have to take into consideration the markers of plague all around her vicinity, and that the other spells from her soul are one that causes plague - then the miracle of what she does heals people of their bodies (implying she does the opposite of this - which the text itself says within the miracle).
      I think Wichlor (in another comment) had more of the duality I (personally) see, that you might completely disagree with!
      "i always believed Astraea to be a Demon that gathers all of the corruption even outside of the Valley of Defilement in an attempt to purify it all with her Demon's Soul. Unfortunately that meant that corruption in her immediate surroundings became of higher concentration because she pulled it all towards her, which is why the situation in the valley worsened. But that's just my take on it."
      Anyways- my bad, the relief part was an obvious one for me to miss in my comment just above. :P
      Either way, I think that's part of the fun of the lore of these games - the various ways that it can be interpreted. I'm sorry if I missed some marks in the video, or didn't make certain speculations clear enough.

      @@DaveControlLive The quotation is present in both fandom and fextralife. It must have come from the source material, possibly npc dialog.
      One of the lore aspects that I enjoy the most about this games is that, as was said, not everything is black and white. There is a component of subjectivity implied and the same story takes a piece of listener into it. Astrea is a the one the exemplifies this dichotomy the best. My view for it align more with VaatiVidya's.

      @@nelprincipe Hmm, yeah, I saw it on both. But - I wrote in 1 document every single bit on NPC dialogue, and another document every single item description from the game. I cross referenced those, and couldn't find it. I also checked the archstone quotes, and it's not there. I checked the old demon-souls website, and couldn't find it there... The quote is unattributed to any source, so it makes me wonder where they got it - as I don't automatically trust wikis as sources. (Although, I do find them super useful).
      I'm mainly trying to find if I missed something, how, and where I missed it, as it can help me for future videos. :)

    HEY DAVE!!! LORE QUESTION ......
    - the ring of sincere prayer. Well first off “sincere” is in the name. Secondly it says it’s one of the only TRUE relics of god remaining. With all the deception about faith and miracles belonging to the old...it seems it may be possible that this is not actually connected to him but the real “god”. To me this indicates that there is indeed an actual god. That and the beginning of the first cutscene

    It was heavily implied in the original game that Astraea had an affair with Garl Vinland and had to abort the baby. In her chamber are the only pools of blood in the area, and they all flow out from her skirt. Also its the only place where those fetus like babies swarm you and try to kill you. It seems like something about the demon souls exploit the weaknesses in your character to bring out the worst in you or to twist you to what the demon soul needs.

      @Aaron Eckhart from In the Company of Men I honestly can't remember the full details. There are some older lore videos that do the full thing more justice. They crawled over everything that was said and the item descriptions and provided a pretty damning account that the saint and Garl had an affair that conceived a child she was forced to abort.

    Personally, I took pleasure in killing Maiden Astrea.
    She was to me, the worst, most vile, most wicked NPC.
    She goes on a mission from god, her stated reason to be there being that god sent her to aliviate suffering, and when made to face the task before her she bawks and flees because of the suffering that exists.
    Well of course, your god sent you to address this, you were supposed to be the hand of compassion and the relief, and we see in her soul the restore life miracle which damns her even more, because SHE COULD HAVE HEALED THEM ALL. But no, like a child she shrugs the responsability of her mission, blames god, and proceeds to torture, torment, and destroy those around her. She became the polar opposite of a savior, she furthered the corruption because of her weak stomach.
    All this, made worse by the fact she dragged Garl Vinland down with her.
    All the people who looked to her for guidance she failed, not because god was cruel as she scapegoated but because she was cruel. She failed to be truly compassionate to restore life. I believe the dirty old woman when she said the place was much nicer before Astrea came.
    Killing that evil monstrous woman was a pleasure.

      Did you watch the video at all??? Even those who went against her mentioned her having a heart too pure. If she only cared about making others suffer and torment then they wouldn’t be asking you and the others before to leave them alone. They would be pursuing you in an attempt to feed on your soul. Even if you kill Garl, she COULD consume the demon soul and resist but instead, she retains her morals and doesn’t resist.
      Don’t forget, she didn’t force those in the Valley to be soul starved, she OFFERED it to them in order to take away their pain and sorrow, which it did!
      You should rewatch the video
