  • Daniel Barnes has been using ScentLok for a few years and during a couple hunts this season he had a doe and then a couple bucks downwind and tossed some milkweed and filmed it floating down towards their faces.
In this video I also explain a weeklong hunt with a bunch of other hunters on public land.

Interesting. I've watched Dan Infalt do the same thing in one of his videos. In his video "Imaginary scent control" it shows the same reaction of deer using milkweed sailing right to the deer. I'm not trying to be argumentative but there can be more there going on than meets the eye.

I was there visiting a friend the day John lost his cool and tuned everyone up. A few guys were giving were giving him a hard time about not getting a deer. John was at the end of his rope and let him have it. It had been a long week for him and some guys were a little disappointed in his performance since John is kind of minor hunting celebrity. John is absolutely telling the truth, he was fired up. After he tuned up the loudmouth Then he went down the line guy by guy and told us why we suck. I loved the constructive criticism and went out and bought new scent lok setup like he uses. I learned alot from being around John even if it was only for a little bit. At first I was afraid of John for a little bit as he is still in pretty good shape and was really agitated. We all diffused the situation before it got out of hand . No punches were thrown like other people are saying. He is a passionate hunter and has a system that works for him and he believes in. Yes, like John says he wasn’t happy about the young bucks being shot on the trip, but he gets it. He wasn’t saying the guys sucked because they shot young deer, he was saying they suck because they missed opportunities on better deer. John’s level of detail and honesty is unrivaled and he’s not afraid to put you in your place. I support John on this one

If I was John I’d get scentlok to send me several suits n backpacks on hunts like this and tell these kids he wants to experiment with them using it correctly. Id ask beforehand which ones are interested in being part of the experiment first and get their sizes. If they see it works they would become believers and the rest would follow. He’s had the success to prove it so no sense arguing. John gets too combative at times lol

Hey John, a friend of mine was up a tree this year when a deer started coming in from upwind (my friend does not use ScentLock, he “plays the wind”). It was coming in at a steady pace, so probably a buck on the trail of a doe. Out of sight, some 50-60 yards he estimated, the deer stopped walked and didn’t make a sound. After some few minutes the deer blew a quick snort and bolted back the way he came.
My friend was surprised and disappointed. He was playing the wind, right? The deer was upwind the whole time. He decided to release a bit of milkweed just to check the wind he could feel on his face. Sure enough, it blew directly away from the direction the deer came from, but then…as it dropped toward the ground, it reversed direction and as he watched it flew back toward where the deer had spooked. The wind had played him, and the deer was no fool. The deer knew what the wind was doing…
The fallacy of “playing the wind” is that in order to know what the wind was doing, you’d have to be able to see it. I don’t know anyone who can “see the wind”. So for my friend, and Dan Infelt, and all the other fools that “play the wind”, you boys seem to be pretty certain of something which you have absolutely no information about.
I use ScentLock because the wind is strange and variable. I’m a pilot with seaplane and mountain experience. The wind is a fickle mistress and will slap the shit out of you with no warning. She’ll do it hard and she’ll do it soft. She’ll do it as you’re landing a plane on water and while you are in your treestand. Although you can sometimes make good judgements about wind, often you cannot. The lighter the wind the more likely your surmise will be wrong. Hunters need to be honest about their perception of the wind and reject this myth that the wind is simple, predicable and can be played…

I have a sneaky feeling this hunt was in Ohio on Muskingum watershed lakes. My buddy’s n I used to have these lakes to ourselves heading into prerut. Now it’s loaded with out of state folks accessing by boat. Most of them hunt like dummies. They don’t understand that buck travel is along the lake in the morning while the thermals are dropping and go busting through the bedding areas in the dark. Hunt low in the mornings and move to the tops mid morning once thermals start rising. Wish Ohio would triple their out of state tags n licenses fees and do a drawing. We have too many hunters as it is. Of course these kids from PA SC VA NY MI are gonna shoot 2 1/2 yr old 115” deer. It’s the biggest deer they see all season. Most of us resident bow hunters don’t shoot those deer. ODNR doesn’t care. All they want is money. Let the out of staters screw it up for the residents

First of all John is a good hunter. Secondly I believe everyone hunts differently there is no right our wrong. Third I believe success isn’t how many big bucks you’ve killed. If that spike horn gave you a thrill so be it!
Sounds like to me John has a hard time with criticism but at the same time he criticizes the people that do not use Scent Lock. I believe that hunting 25’ 30’ in the tree aids to John’s success. I’ve used Scent Lock the same way John has, (paired with an Ozonics) and still got busted!!!?? Hunt the way that makes YOU happy. If you get busted so be it there’s always another day another deer and another spot to hunt. That’s why it’s called hunting. The hunting industry has become more and more geared towards tech and gimmicks that are taking the fun out of hunting.

Most of hunters - me included - don't have the discipline to apply your regimen. And for that reason, we can't have an opinion whether it works or not. I wish Scentlock would make it easier to use and give you more support with tests/data.

    • @bendrixbailey1430
      @bendrixbailey1430 10 месяцев назад

John answered that lightly. Its a huge myth that Ozone recharges scent lock. Its activated carbon which works by adsorption. The little spaces fill in with scent molecules and you have to clean those out. That can only be done with high dryer heat. The company, Scent Lock, is really doing a disservice by pushing the ozone shit. By the way, Ozone is terribly corrosive. It will degrade rubber and plastic, and it is very bad for your health. Ozone destroys the Cilia in your lungs and throat. Don’t expose yourself to it.

John, I have read (and studied with notes) your book, Precision Bowhunting. It has absolutely increased my success, and in fact, every year since I am killing at least one or two Pope & Young bucks. However, I often find that the complete scent control regiment is time consuming and arduous and sometimes causes me stress and pressure to try and cram it all in before, during and after the hunt. Do you ever have a 'modified' or reduced scent control approach occasionally on hunts you may not have either the time or preparation facilities at hand to go in 100%? Or would you simply not hunt that day if you couldn't be 100% nose-invisible? Obviously I prefer to have enough time to get all my showering, and gear prep, and scentlok clothes stuffed in airtight sacks, etc...but sometimes I have maybe a total of 3 1/2 hrs from the time i get home to get it all together and travel and hunt before dark, etc...?

I know nothing about activated carbon because i have never used it. I have had deer downwind of me that didnt spook and some have obviously. I think it depends on the area. I hunt small woodlots in farm country and i think the deer are used to the farmer's being around and tending to the cattle Nd working in the fields and human scent doesnt affect them like it does in certain areas. I think Dan Infalt has a video where he was bouncing milkweed off a deers back that was downwind and that deer never spooked . Dan definitely doesn't use scentlok. I have no doubt that scentlok works if you use it properly. I think for some people playing the wind is part of the challenge that they enjoy. I say do whatever you enjoy and dont worry what others are doing. If you want to use scentlok thats fine. I wouldn't mind trying it myself.

I follow Johns scent regime exactly. What I've noticed is there's zero doubt it works on ground scent. I've had countless deer walk across, and on my trail. Zero deer spook.
I'll start by saying on cold, windy days i wear multiple layers of scentlok. I wear a base layer, mid layer and heavy layer, gloves pull down face mask and a beanie. I've only had moderate success on windy days, however. I've been winded numerous times on windy days. I'm not saying the scentlok isn't working. It could be something as simple as a bow string etc...

I must chirp in here as what most garment companies use and claim as a scent control technology is an anti-microbial in their exterior garments. First off, any anti microbial must be worn against the skin to come in contact with and kill bacteria. So only base garments with anti microbials help in some form. Having an anti microbial in an exterior garment is like having ants in your house and spraying insect killer on the exterior of your house. It doesn't kill the ants inside. Secondly, even when wearing an anti microbial base garment, it only kills some of the bacteria and it does nothing to get rid of the odor molecules from the bacteria it kills. It also does nothing in getting rid of the other 100's of differing odor molecules we emit from our bodies in gaseous and liquid forms. Carbon Alloy holds a US patent and other companies can't use it without ScentLok's permission, so of course they dismiss its effectiveness.

Been using the whole scentlok regiment for a year and half now giving it my best effort before I came to my own conclusion. I wish I could say I have been getting the results as others claim but unfortunately I haven’t. Now I can say I have had what seemed to be positive experiences with deer downwind but for the most part when a deer gets downwind of me they still bust me. Really deer get uneasy around me in general for whatever reason and whatever I put off even if wind is quartering to them. I do everything John teaches, never washed my SL( though considering it now) kept in airtight totes, dress at hunting site, dropdown face mask, SL gloves, don’t touch SL with bare hands, wash my saddle kept in seperate airtight tote, SL backpack when I take one in, knee high rubber boots, pants drapped down over top. I do have pretty good results with deer crossing my walking path, but deer are still winding me. It just hasn’t convinced me yet and I really really wish the results were different. So I am running out of ideas. Spoke with the owner at camo dust and he claims his product is a game changer too. Anyone try that stuff with luck? I may just go back to using hardwood smoke and playing the wind which I still always do to the best of my abilities. But hunting hill country is tough with swirling winds. Really about fee up with all of it.

I harvested my first buck from the ground with the bow and was wearing the Scentlok suit. Idk if it’s a gimmick or not yet but it seems to be working for me and I never check for wind. The only thing I would say is make sure you’re following Jon’s processes of de-absorption and storage of clothing. The other issue that may be a factor, which I say with no offense, is you hunting/scouting skills. Johns theory on scentlok is hard to believe, but I'm definitely open to learning his process and giving it a shot!

@@R90916 it's the only saddle I've ever used so I'm not 100% sure, but from what I can tell by pictures is that he took off the straps that go between my legs, nothing goes between my legs, and I have two pouches stitched into the back of the bottom panel that I don't see on the stock saddle. Could be more modifications but those are the only two that are obvious to me

You obviously have never paid attention to the regimen as everything you mentioned is covered in it, everything.

Any tips on dealing with the moisture buildup from breath, while wearing a dropdown face masks fir long periods of time? I feel like I have to "drop it down" periodically to get some fresh air and get the moisture off my face!

Get a light face mask and if your face is sweating that much your body is probably to warm unless it’s just hot hot outside

@@Louisiana-critter-getterI don't think he's taking about sweat. It's more the condensation from your breath. I have the same issue.
