Guys, I tried your recipe for Yaki Onigiri. HUGE hit with the family... wound up getting stuck making more for everyone's lunches for the next day... well, I made some for my lunch too so... Fantastic recipe. Oh yes, my oldest daughter is gluten intolerant and LOVES the rice cheese sandwiches you guys came up with. You guys rock!
Aww we love hearing that and so happy that everyone liked these! we will keep your daughter in mind and try coming up with more recipes for her. Say hello to her for us!
Hey there friends! Today we're making my mother's favorite way to eat Onigiri. Yaki Onigiri means Grilled Rice Balls and really takes onigiri to the next level. Enjoy!
Hey! Really enjoy watching your videos! I'm addicted to japanese cuisine but I'm from Portugal (currently living in the UK). I was wondering how did you make the rice and what type of rice did you use? Really love your videos! Keep up the awesome content!
TabiEats I have been visit Kyoto for the past two weeks and decided I will like to take onigiri for work lunches because I love them so much, they are filling and fairly healthy. Is there a trick to keep the rice moist while being stored?
I have a good friend who is Japanese and your descriptions of foods and tours of the cities have helped me in conversations. Thank you for explaining things so well. You two are great !
Love onigiri! The kids and husband absolutely love it and said it's like a hash brown but with rice when Cooked in the pan. The nutty flavor from pan cooking is beautiful!!!
Something to cook for breakfast! You know, this is something that makes breakfast cooking enjoyable. Why? Because it's easy enough to feel free of hassle-you can just sit there and chill carefree while it cooks and the end result is just tasty.
I love this channel. As someone who did a lot of cooking, then moved to Japan and not have an oven so most of my cooking knowledge is useless, you got some great new recipes for me to try and the ones I have so far have been awesome.
My hubby and I are trying this tonight!! Ty so much for the recipe! I've been so in love with your channel since I found you! You given me the ability to try so much enjoyable Japanese recipes! Hope everyone is safe and sound after the earthquake!
Oh Shinichi you cooked your mom version of the rice ball thats so sweet of you to share with the viewers your mom recipe. Hope you keep making more recipes in the future. Say hi to Satoshi, see you on your next video bye sleep thight and good night Shinichi.
Ok these are great, I had never had them before so I made them last night. I sprinkled mine with Nigiri and black sesame. Thanks for all the videos guys.
gardengalsu I found some frozen grilled onigiri in my local Japanese market. They were amazing, so I can only imagine how delicious fresh ones would be.
I really like this format guys. Explaining the recipe/english and helping each other cook is a fun dynamic. Thanks for the tips! Making this for my new girlfriend and I can't wait for her to enjoy it.
I have been wanting to know how I could make onigiri since I saw your video on it. I'm so excited to see it wasn't terribly complicated and I'm very excited to try it.
Question for you, is the rice cold? Warm? Hot? How soon after cooking the rice should I be making the onigiri? You guys are so helpful. I love watching your videos. Thanks so much for sharing your experiences with me!
I live in LA and here we have corn men that go around in little carts. they sell corn with it covered in mayo and chillie powder on a big stick. it tastes amazing maybe you guys should try making it
Another wonderful video - the onigiri look absolutely scrumptious! I hope you'll do another video with the miso version. Are you all okay after the earthquake? I heard that it was felt quite strongly in Tokyo. I hope you are all safe, including Justin. We get earthquakes here also, and I know they are difficult. Sending caring thoughts your way.
Your Yaki Onigiri look great. Never thought of grilling on a frying pan. I used to make bunch for my son and his friends when we had BBQ. I put cheese in the middle, then brushed with sweet sesame/peanut butter soy/miso sauce. Boy, the boys ate like there was no tomorrow!!. Great side for BBQ meats, too.
Dunno why but I tend to crave for onigiri whenever I'm in Japan but never at home. LOL. I do like this grilled version very much esp because there is pickled plum! My fave. 😍😘❤️️
When I've made grilled onigiri, I've kind of just put them in a frying pan and poured soy sauce on to them. Seems to work pretty well, and tastes great.
Thank you for this video. Can you also share the recipe for the miso yaki onigiri and the Okaka? Those looked so delicious in the food haul and I'd love to take those for lunch. Thanks again & stay healthy!!
I made some this morning, gotta say I love the simplicity of it. I had to swap out the pickled plums for thin sliced butter pickles but the sweetness works SO well with the texture of the rice. Gotta work on my technique though, I couldn't make a triangular rice ball if my life depended on it. XD
I've got an old family cheese dip recipe I want to use as filling for some rice balls now, the Rice 'feels' like a bread product, so I'm thinking anything that would go on a sandwich will make a good Onigiri. (See below)
omg shinichi your mom it's so practical. pour and grill. 😊 I'll love to have soy sauce in all sides of my onigiri. I love soy sauce. you guys looked so nice wearing similar shirt. great video as always. greetings from Nicaragua
Cool 😎 😎 😎 I've never seen Yaki Onigiri made. Thank you gentlemen for the recipe and techniques. (Oven & Skillet) As I've said, I can cook alot of Japanese recipes and now I can't wait to try this new to me recipe. 😋 sesame & plum - 😀🙏
Looks amazing!! Thanks for sharing guys! One of my favorite fillings for onigiri is mixing Katsuobushi with shoyu, then squeezing out the excess shoyu. You end up with a nice chunk of smoky shoyu flavored fish in the center of your onigiri.
In my family we usually make yaki oniguiri when we make BBQ. It goes really well with the grilled meats. Just put them on the grill and drizzle some shoyu on them.
Ohh I'm triggered right now to make this for dinner, nomm. Don't judge me but what I absolutely love is a Miso-Soysauce mixture, and after pouring on the second time I sprinkle suger over the ricepatty (can't shape it like a onigiri XD) so it caramelice, I do adore salty and sweet together X3 Now I'm really looking forward for dinner, thanx for the awesome advice how to make the onigirishape I will practice :D

Hi Yoshiko. Aren't they delicious? Hope you are enjoying this season as well!
These are exactly what I send with my kids to school. They like a a touch of butter vs oil or sesame oil with the soy sauce!
Imagine a picnic bento with mini onigiri of all kinds, grilled, filled, etc. Yum!

Question for you, is the rice cold? Warm? Hot? How soon after cooking the rice should I be making the onigiri? You guys are so helpful. I love watching your videos. Thanks so much for sharing your experiences with me!
The rice should be room temperature, its easier to mold and wont burn your hand! ☺ I would try 20-30 minutes to let the rice cool down.
great recipe. thank you
I live in LA and here we have corn men that go around in little carts. they sell corn with it covered in mayo and chillie powder on a big stick. it tastes amazing maybe you guys should try making it

Can you put stuff like tuna and mayo in the middle if preferred?
Yes you can
