    Hey Joe, great video. Started watching your vlogs before I started doing this full-time. Your tips were helpful and relevant then, as they are now. Up in New Brunswick Canada, tapping 2200 trees this year.

    • @YoungbloodFamilyFarm
      @YoungbloodFamilyFarm  3 года назад

      Oh wow, is 2200 trees/taps a full time job? I know it would be a lengthy comment but I would love to hear this story. I know that at our scale it’s usually a solid day getting set up and 2 days cleaning and storing. And then any sales just trickle in. Is this part of a larger farm operation, Man I’m smiling just imagining what full time would look like, take care

      @@YoungbloodFamilyFarm Well, it sure is during the syrup season. Of course I have pipeline going throughout the property which has been my full time gig for the last year and a half. I planned, scoped out the terrain on maps and in person, made sure I was taking advantage of every available maple, making sure everything is on a downhill slope, forked out the initial costs for a big evaporator and vacuum pump, and learned a lot along the way about silviculture and chain saws. The goal is to get as close as possible to automation and full-time work during the season only. I am also a fairly good vegetable farmer and plan on using all the trees I cut down to thin things out in the creation of a couple four season greenhouses, one of which will be home to dwarf fruit trees that will produce fresh fruit that I can’t get without buying them from growers that are much further south. I plan on making a few videos when I get some time. I can share them with you if you like? Oh, and although my sales come in throughout the year too, a fair chunk of it gets sold by pre-order from my current customers. Luckily, I have a wonderful supportive wife, who makes enough to have supported us during this expansion period.

      @@chrispellerin7627 do you have a website or Facebook page? I’d love to order some New Brunswick maple syrup and see how it compares to the Ontario maple syrup that I’m used to. I think it’s awesome that people continue to make this incredible natural sweet goodness it sure takes a lot of time, effort and skill. Nothing like going to the sugar bush early on a Sunday morning when a festival is on and a scout troop is preparing pancakes and sausage topped with warm maple syrup, served on paper plates with plastic cutlery and eating outdoors in the cold crisp air. I used to love taking my girls on those adventures even when they were teens, a wonderful family outing and we got to support the charity group that was running it and we also would purchase a tin of maple syrup to take home to support the farmer. 🥰🙏🏻🇨🇦

    Was looking to see if you’d started your 2022 boil vlogs yet and stumbled across this. You may not be getting as many views as you would like but I can assure you watching your videos a couple of years ago helped me tremendously and getting my set up going. Are usually run anywhere from 40 to 60 tabs and make anywhere from 3 1/2 to 5 gallons per season. It is strictly a hobby not professional, lots of fun, keeps me out of trouble.Look forward to your 2022 vlogs

I kinda just want to encourage folks like yourself to love the Maple Syrup making as much as I do. Currently, we are frozen in my part of Michigan at around 15 today, the next 2 days are supposed to warm up into the 40s and then freeze again for another week or so. I will tap once the temps start to cycle again, Thanks for checking in

    Nice seeing you out boiling finally. Upgraded my system to a smoky lake star cat evaporator this year...great little arch! Finished my last boil today in east-central Missouri. Had 25 taps out since early January. Boiled about 200 gal of sap making just short of 5 gallons of syrup for the year.
    Hoping your season is stellar!

    • @YoungbloodFamilyFarm
      @YoungbloodFamilyFarm  3 года назад

      Yeah weather made for a late start, but sap is filling buckets pretty consistently as of lately. How’s the evaporation rate of that Smokey lake match up to your sap rate?

    • @jbilly24
      @jbilly24 3 года назад

      @@YoungbloodFamilyFarm It works geat for smaller batches, say 30-50 gallons. Any more than that it makes for a long day. If I had anymore taps, I would recommend going up a size. My StarCat has a 16 X 30 inch divided pan and I can boil at about 8 gallons per hour.

      Well, I was up until 4am boiling about 6 gallons. I ended up with a half quart of light brown, cloudy syrup. I’m wondering if I should boil it more inside. I pulled it off at 220 degrees

    • @YoungbloodFamilyFarm
      @YoungbloodFamilyFarm  3 года назад +1

      Syrup should be finished at around 219, at 220 it will be a touch thicker than specs but it would be fine. It may be worth it to just let it settle in a mason jar if you are looking for a clear product. I would not boil it more

    Great tips to produce syrup more efficiently! I just wrapped up my 4th season of sugaring and have used several of the suggestions you shared to increase my time spent to yield rate. Raised my box higher and ramped up to get the heat to the pan. Thats where its at!. I run a pretty shallow pan too. Try to keep it an inch or less. Got to keep an eye on things but experience helps. Maybe next year a blower or RO to get even more output. Great video!

    Very nice video and informative, just started my first season of sugaring in upstate ny. I've got 42 taps and I've only been able to collect about 30 gallons of sap its been SLOOOOW. Out of that I've only got a little over a half gallon of finished syrup on my barrel evaporator. Thanks for the great videos keep them coming

    • @YoungbloodFamilyFarm

      I understand that slow stage very well, as much as a lot of sap feels like a blessing, it feels like a responsibility, and that can be overwhelming, hope you have a great and fun season

    Hi Joe, thanks for the great videos and sharing your knowledge. Made my ro system last fall after seeing your video on it. One question, do you have an automatic shut off in case your sap barrel runs dry? I would like to walk away from mine and not worry about the pump burning up. I might add that I use 5 gallon buckets. Don't do enough for using 20 gal.or bigger drums. Thanks again, Dan.

    • @YoungbloodFamilyFarm
      @YoungbloodFamilyFarm  3 года назад

      I do not use a shut off, I know they sell them. I do use a 30 gallon barrel and I was nervous about running dry, so I send my concentrate back into the original barrel making the sap more concentrated. Sound like you are doing great, keep having fun!
