Honest mechanics like Toby are at a premium. Always nice to hear a mechanic tell you what is real bad and what can wait just ahead. Those types deserve customers business because you know they aren't out to screw the customer. Honesty is refreshing every so often.
Hah ! when you buy an old motor all you want is for it to go for as long as possible, anything that works properly is a bonus, it’s a motor to go to work in, if it passes it’s statutory test it’s a go !

Yep, this guy is like the car wizard right to the point no bs.
He may not be after the customer. But the advice he gives is not accurate. You can’t just look at a shock or strut and know if it is good or not. I replaced 2 on my car a while ago and both looked perfect with no rust and perfect paint still. But on my gfs car they were rusted to hell and worked perfect.
Honest mechanics are treated like craps compared to the dishonest mechanics makes you want to stop working on cars

Love Toby. He deserves a show or a full segment on TFL. He doesn't sugar coat anything. Very professional and direct in his diagnostics. Impressive volume of knowledge of what a vehicle needs to wor. He understands whether a part needs replacement or needs monitoring. Great mechanic with a personal real world touch.

I really enjoy watching a mechanic inspect old used trucks. This could seriously be a series into itself. Just find old used trucks and suvs for sale and inspect all the issues. I would watch and like every episode :)

Well, Toby is right about those 4.0 head gaskets. Mine only lasted 329K miles. And it was from a radiator hose falling off.
And my shift knob has been falling off for probably 10 years...

Ford Rangers with the 2.3 / 3.0 and 4.0 ohv's are some of the longest lasting engines made...but hey, let's just unfairly ignorantly bash quality inexpensive American vehicles and support foreign competitors... ?

Between BIG GREEN, RUSTY BOY, less expensive purchase options, and honest real world comparisons places you at the top of the automotive channels out there. Keep up the videos and thanks for what you do.
I love buying affordable 4x4s and fixing them up. My problem is I keep them when all fixed up and move onto the next one. Do your homework and you can get good stuff for 2500 or less even in today's market place.
That bracket on the frame is original. It wasn’t added. A steering damper is attached there and goes to the steering linkage.
As a ASE Master Mechanic I'm especially fond of the 1/2 tube of Red RTV used to seal the 'crack' between the bell housing and the bottom of the oil pan there.
That welded on bracket looks like a steering stabilizer mount. Also, you can't judge any of these vehicles on the quality of the tires.
That Jeep with the 4.7 is a bomb waiting to go off, should have found one with the 4.0 straight 6. The blazer has a very common issue of the oil cooler lines leaking. The blazer will outlast the other two by a long shot.
Probly not though, they like over heating and then tanking.

A friend of mine used to drive his car to and from work all week long, then dump 4 quarts of oil in it on Sunday, and drive it another week....couldn't figure out why he was always blowing up engines...then again they were Subarus LOL.
As someone that lives in the rust belt it amazes me what some people consider rusty. It also amazes me how clean those underbodies are.
As a 17 year old kid who dailys a 97 chevy blazer that is beat to hell I am super excited to see the test on this cause I know it's gonna do good. Mine has been beat off road and on road and still runs great. The late 90 and early 2000 blazers and s10s are indestructible and thats from a die hard ford guy

the smear of red RTV at the bottom of the bell housing is pretty funny. Plus that's a c-clip rear axle, so that 's not how you check the bearing. The tire/wheel/axleshaft will have a bit of axial play, even when new.
Agreed on the rear wheel bearings. Also the channel-lock pliers aren't the proper way to check tie rod ends on these vehicles, hence why every one he checked seems to have way too much play. This Toby guy probably knows euro cars, but he's probably not the guy to be looking over old domestic 4x4s.

my prediction, the jeep trans will fail. the mazdas front auto locking hubs will fail to work when 4x4 is really needed. the chevy will blow an oil cooler line pumping all the engine oil out.
I think the jeep will be just fine, the other two will struggle. Someone likely pulled something extremely heavy with the jeep and set off the temp codes.
@@codylapoint I'm pretty sure 1 of the TCC control springs in the trans pump is broken, especially at 200k+ miles it's common. It won't allow the converter to lock up properly in 4th gear so the clutches in the converter are getting worn quickly and get hot. it can also cause low line pressure especially when cold. It may start to overheat at freeway speeds if they become too worn but should perform fine otherwise.
@@chadingram6390 Interesting, I've never had a 545 rfe or the 4 speed version apart before. I just know I've never had one fail. One of them would slip for a few seconds after cold startup until it built line pressure, but if you let it idle for 15 seconds or so it would shift just fine.

@@TheSavage3.6 No it won't, it just won't lock up the torque converter and will cause the clutches to burn up and heat up the trans. I've fixed this problem in this jeep and it does not go into limp mode, it just won't engage the clutches

Chrysler drivetrains are junk!!
The hemi has oiling issues and undersized oil return veins, same with the 4.7 oiling issues undersized oil return veins and the valve seats come out of the heads..
The engine in that jeep is not original I know that for sure...
@@philllsxga.7737 you don’t. Again too many are ON THE ROAD TODAY. Everyone isn’t spending more than a car is worth to keep it on the road. Both engine and trans. HIS ram had issues. Again, TOO MANY of them of old on the road. Lots of first generation Durango’s everywhere as well. Explain why? are ALLL these people replacing engines every few thousand miles? You make no sense. If the transmission AND engine issues were wide spread, you wouldn’t see ANY at all. It’s not uncommon to see any of the vehicles I mentioned.

The coolant hose “splice” on the Mazda near the firewall is actually a vacuum operated valve for the coolant to flow to the heater core when you put on the heat, They usually take a crap so you just put a double male connector on there
Toby, I seem to like him. He's got a very light hearted personalty. He's got some quirks and mannerisms that makes him pretty unique. I think he'd make a good addition to the show as a regular.
You guys have a sort of top gear vibe ,without all the extra camera work, editing and cheesy comedy. Your blend of personalities make it work, and inform at the same time
Jeep was the best because it was somewhat expensive new and previous owner spent money on maintaining it. Blazer not so much and the Mazda was el cheapo that saw no basically no maintenance
Headmaster issues on rangers is normally a 2.3 and 3.0 issue the 4.0 has a timing chain issue

The ball on the hood is the vacuum source for the dash vents. Unplug it and they won't switch over just blow out the bottom or the top only
I bought from a friend 1 year and 3 months ago a 1995 Toyota Tacoma 4x4, V6, manual 5 speed, power everything and even cruise control, tires are 31 1050 R15 brand new. Two-door and has been parked in a garage it's whole life and for the two biggies, and only had 86000 original miles and I paid $3,500. So now I park it in my garage and as of today she has 91,000 miles. I have never seen a 95 Toyota Tacoma this clean she is definitely a beauty!

Not necessarily. If your old car is a worthless pile, then you either should get the cheapest guy possible, or do the work yourself. Otherwise, you'll just be throwing good many after bad. This is because, for many old cars, the repairs total the value of the car. Remember that before you start digging yourself into a hole and wasting your money.
just a heads up on the ford ranger 4.0L V6 that is the OHV engine which is a hell of a lot more robust than the SOHC engine , there is a stroker kit for the 4.0L OHV engine , still worth every penny he spent on it , even though it does require a engine rebuild, i would not hesitate to purchase it
Not as much gloom & doom as some make it out to be. They all have a lot of miles & years, yet they all drove in under their own power. And all the issues are fixable.
I wouldn't want to pull an engine at 230k for main seals. That would be like trying to save an urn from a fully engulfed burning building.
Years ago I pulled engines apart to fix oil leaks. Fixed the leak but in the grand scheme it didn’t really change anything. Nowadays I say just let ‘er drip - it keeps the undercarriage from rusting. 😁

I swapped my electronic 4x4 for manual hubs. Best investment for my old Ranger a few years back.

Yeah, that 1966 Dodge Coronet look's sweet. About 30 year's ago I had a '66 Plymouth Satellite convertible. I never got around to fixing it up and sold it. Wish I kept it.

Mechanics love to call stuff dangerous lol. As a bodyguy I dont think ive seen any accident related to an old steering component.
i got my first car for 1800 and it was no where near as bad as these cars, all mine need was a new transmission mount as the old one was cracked in half, after the first year of driving i replaced another two parts like the cooling fan and a relay and now after 3 yrs i have done a wheel bearing, brake caliper, brake hoses, alternator, all the motor mounts, new tires, cht sensor, and a battery. ive done all the work myself and the car has treated me nicely for being a cheap car and it doesnt leak any fluids, no oil leaks, no coolant leaks, nothing underneath not even old residue. i couldnt be more grateful
As a WJ owner it’s hard to trust a WJ WITHOUT some kind of leak
I know it's an old video that I'm just seeing now but I have owned about 40 cars in 55 years of life. I have never heard of or experienced or have ever paid for a brake fluid flush. Ever. And I'm in the automotive industry. Until aftermarket Lube company started selling their products at car dealerships no one ever thought about changing that fluid

On that 4.0, when that oil pressure sensor Ford used starts to leak, REPLACE IT, mine started dripping occasionally, nothing major, then a couple days later it dumped all my oil less then 2 miles from my house and left me stranded. So once it starts leaking it needs to be changed immediately. I like how he knows about the head/head gasket problem on these 4.0’s lol I’ve replaced my head gaskets 2 times following Fords standard operating procedure for a head gasket repair.
You know I think Toby should have his own little side show on TFL or maybe his own channel on RUclips. I for one wouldn't mind watching him work on stuff, I like the way he talks about cars and his mechanical mindset

That's a factory bracket on that blazer, by the suspension, it's the steering bump shock bracket. That torched metal around it is also from GM themselves
I've got a 98 Ranger with well over 250K on the ticker, heads are an issue. Haven't had any issues with gaskets but they have a tendency to crack between the intake and exhaust valves. I don't have any hard evidence but I heard there was an issue with whoever did the castings for the heads. I'd dump those auto hubs for a manual setup. This is going to be a fun series.

The Blazer doesn't need oil changes anymore, it changes itself.
I've had 2 Ford Rangers. Always go with the 4 cylinder and stuck! My first on had over 318000 miles on it when an accident claimed it! The second one had 274000 when I sold it! Both has 2500 four cylinders! Both were 98s. Lot of auto part stores used them for deliveries. Always get the inline 4 and 5 speed stick. Stay away from the automatics and 6 cylinder trucks.
What would be cool to see is doing this type of thing with used diesel pickups. I know it would likely be a bit down the road because it would be a bit more expensive. But do an ike gauntlet, and different work truck type challenges.

The mopar 4.7L v8 is a nortorious overheating engine , they put the thermostat on the cool side of the radiator , my Ram 1500 with that engine loved to be over the half way mark . Got a jegs in-line thermostat housing moved thermostat to top right now thermostat works and I have a good truck no more over heating

what do you call a rear main then lmao. thats a pretty big job depending on two piece or one piece rear seal.
The 545 rfe in the jeep is stronger than the 4l60e in the s10 .
Replace a heater core on that chevy then tell me how much you love it.

I had a 96 Mazda with the 4.0 with the factory off-road pack and a 5 speed! I LOVED LOVED LOVED IT here in Western Washington State for the mountains!
That grand Cherokee is very clean and it's very rare to have a selec trac 4wd system in the v8 those usually came with the 🪳 engine that I love. That thing is rust free on the rockers. I have one that is too but I paid $10,000 for mine it had 119000 miles now it has 132.

Bought an 01 Sonoma ZR2 with a manual last year for $700. Needed 4wd actuator, intake seals, water pump, egr tube, secondary air pump, u joints, pads rotors and calipers all around, driver side cv axle, brake line going to the rear, spark plugs and wires, and tires. Take away the cost of the tires and I would've came in under budget for this 🤣 especially since I do all the work myself...somewhat correctly

S10 oil leaks are a built in feature for rust prevention.
A 93 ranger was the worst vehicle I ever owned it was constantly broken and my 98 grand Cherokee transmission slipped at only 85k miles. Definitely expected these results lol
I would rather fix worn out suspension then have to fix a bad transmission any day. Same goes for the Chevy with its rear main seal leak, either way with both the jeep or the Chevy you’re pulling a transmission to do repair
But it hasn’t. Lol
Suspension work can cost as much, if not more, than a transmission job these days.
Mechanic here for 25 years. Twin I beam suspension is very easy to fix and and are damn near impossible to break. If you have ever had the pleasure as I have to pull a transmission, completely tear it down, rebuild it, then reinstall it. It’s not fun in the least bit. Not saying I enjoy rebuilding a whole front end but I would take that over a trans job any day. Also with all those codes it has they will come right back and it will go out. The transmission alone will cost more then the price of the car. Not hating on the jeep, I own a wrangler my self and have owned several rangers “Mazda” in my life.
