Standard Malay and Indonesian is closer to each other than Kelantanese is to either. She speaks Kelantanese (or Kelantan-Pattani lect) and it is actually too distant to Malay language that it can be considered its own language. It’s mutually unintelligible to most Malay speakers. It would’ve been easier for you to converse with her had she speaks in Standard Bahasa Melayu than in Kelantanese “dialect”. It’s as distant to Standard Malay as Baso Minang is to Malay. Linguistically close but mutually unintelligible.

@@johnnyBandB yup, very similar. Kelantanese Malay (or Kelantan-Patani), Sarawakian Malay, Terengganuan Malay, Kedahan Malay, etc developed separately than the Standard Malay which was taken from Johorean Malay (Johor-Riau). They don’t have standardized version and their status are only dialects. If they have their own standardized form, it can be considered a separate language than the Standard Malay considering how different the language are.
      As comparison:-
      English: have you eaten?
(Formal) Standard Malay: adakah kamu sudah makan?
(Informal) Non-standard Johorean Malay: kau dah makan?
*Kelantanese Malay: mu doh mekey ko?*

Indonesian and Malay are the same language with different standards though (and different names). In formal form, they both pretty much are the same.
When people from the two country meet, they tend to use their respective languages instead of English. There are many videos on youtube showing Malaysian politicians were using Malay when being interviewed by Indonesian journalist in Indonesian language. The same applies Indonesian interviewed by Malaysian in Malay.

    • @Warrioruk
