  • First time getting flowers and fruits from one of my Cherry of the Rio Grande fruit tree/shrub grown from seed in 2015 in Sacramento, CA.
In my opinion, they have a taste similar to a cherry but with other flavors. My wife says it tastes like a bing cherry, apricot, and plum.
They plants are slow growing evergreen. They don't require chill hours like many stone fruits and would be perfect for warmer climates. They'll tolerate some frost, but are subtropicals and can be killed at temperatures too low for too long.
Their seeds cannot be dried out or it'll lose viability.

Got a seedling from an organic nursery in central Florida for around 20 bucks. Looking forward to my first harvest

What is the name of the nursery? I like to plant one for my backyard. Thank you.

Lucky. I bought mine from there (Vista CA Right?) and they were much more expensive in 2021.

These are tropical fruits. Without protection I’d say growing zone 9 would be the coldest they would survive without supplemental heat. As far as a number…I’d say they could probably endure a short period (maybe several hours)of about 30 degrees. But for the most part these should be in subtropical or tropical climates.

Please tell me how to harvest the seed. I have a ton of the trees and I am moving so I need to learn before then.

I grew from seeds that someone sent me. The seeds need to be planted as soon as possible, they don't store. Most of the seeds I received sprouted in the mail
