I knew Hal for many years. Met as "boat-buddies" in Marina del Rey back around '79, and we kept in touch after he moved to the desert. He was as good a man as he was a drummer. I was a Charter Captain in Marina del Rey and Hal called me Captain Rick. (Captain "Dick" when he wanted a laugh). He was the best...miss him very much.

@Victor Block Hal and I were both on the same dock in MDR for a while and I was there when Dennis Wilson drowned. I spoke with Dennis a few times, when shaving in the head, in the parking lot, on the dock, unloading groceries etc...But he had so much facial hair I never recognized him. That night divers finally located the body and I held the dock-gate open as the medics rolled the gurney up the gangway.

Hal is truly an inspiration in music, and also a great example on how to be a true pro in anything a person does in life. When you look at all of Hal Blaine's work and achievements, he could be the all around greatest musician that has ever lived. And he truly deserves this title. In terms of performance, nobody did more for Popular Music than Hal. What a wonderful human being Hal was. RIP Mr. Hal Blaine.

Along with Hal's incredible ability to fit his drumming to the music and come up with his own unique style, he said something here that I think also helps explain his longevity. And that was that he said he didn't do drugs. He mentioned two letters..."R"& "R"...Responsibility and Reliability. He had professional integrity. How many otherwise good drummers & guitar players & other musicians let drugs and alcohol destroy their lives? And for what...a temporary good time...at the expense of everyone else. Hal, I hope I get to see you ..."up there"...some day..!!

In the late 60’s, and into the early 70’s, I was a young lad learning to play the drums. I would come home from school everyday, and instead of turning on the TV to watch “Dark Shadows”, (a popular after school TV show in those days) I would make a bee-line for my bedroom, put a stack of 45’s on my record player ( totally random picks), put on my cheap headphones, sit at my Rogers drum kit, and I would play along with whatever record dropped.
I learned tempo, I learned dynamics, I learned feel and groove, and most importantly, how to play not to myself, but to the SONG.
At the time, I had no conscious idea that I was learning all those things; I just tried my best to play what I heard being played by the drummer on the records.
Years later, I found out that the drummer on 8 out of every 10 songs I played along to in those days... was Hal Blaine.
The Association, Paul Revere &The Raiders, The Byrds, The Beach Boys, The Monkees... Hal was on so many of those records that I played along to.
I didn’t realize, until decades later, after doing hundreds of dates as a studio session drummer, and thousands of gigs playing with live bands, that it was Hal who first taught me to play, and he taught me more than any actual instructor I ever had.
Of course, Hal never knew any of this, and I regret that I never had the opportunity to thank him.
I can’t help but to wonder - how many other young drummers from that time were also taught to play drums by Hal Blaine.
RIP, Hal. You were a great drummer... and a great teacher. ❤️🙏🕯
