    AvP is soo underappreciated.
The practical effects in a CGI generation were effective.
The pacing is solid and has somewhat of a Jurassic Park vibe in the first act.
Many comic references were brought to life without copying the exact story of the original source material.
Set peices were consistent and fun to look at.
Characters served their purpose without being annoying.
Scar was the coolest predator and I loved the team up with Alexa because it reveals how complex Youtja can be. Predator movies always depict human carnage as the predators' achievement but this movie took a chance on something different and I happened to love it.

I've never understood the hate AvP the movie got from some fans, its bloody great!! It's my third favourite Predator movie behind Predator and Predator 2 and my third favourite Aliens movie behind Alien and Aliens.
It also shows how back then they did 'strong women' the right way. No men were put down by Lexa and the guys hold their own, even the bad ones. It's so weird how days politics in Hollywood want more diversity and strong female representation and yet ... well, they've always had that as shown by this movie and a ton of others

Although I liked the movie at the time, I still didn't love it. I had read the Noguchi AvP novel and found it to have many parallels, the book was better. Most of the characters were bland as you said, Sanaa Lathan wasn't super charismatic but I still liked her. I hated the beefy and immobile Predators. The oversized wrist blades and shoulder cannons were also goofy. The one idea that I LOVED was Grid. It gave the Aliens personality rather than them just being instinctive drones. Grid wanted revenge.

I never had a problem.with AVP other than the pg-13 pull but otherwise i felt it was more by the books to the point and as far as the "cardboad" characters wats the draw? The fight between the aliens and the predator aliens there was really no need for character development thats not the draw. The critics were ridiculous.

Why do so many people jump on the bandwagon that AVP for the Jaguar is really good? I swear half of the people/youtubers who hype it have never even played the game. It's awful, very simplistic level design which is comparable the original 'Wolfenstein 3d' slow, clunky boring movement and not satisfying to play any character and just running on a crappy game engine.
I had a Jag on release and got AVP when it was released. I believed the hype and was very disappointed. Within two evenings Doom was back in the console, and i traded AVP.

Requiem is better than people give it credit for! One of countless things AvP1 did horribly was the predators looked like rubbish (fat blokes in suits had never been more obvious) and the action was all so cartoony CG esp with the aliens defying all physical logic. Requiem corrects all this with practical fx and actual gore. All those exaggerated claims of it being supposedly too dark are only a few moments and that's it! Of cos the humans all were horrible so they were the one thing that brought Requiem down... not tht you'd go to a AvP film to watch humans anyhow! Action was where Requiem excelled!

I have three problems with the AVP films. First, putting it on Earth in the modern day removes humans as a genuine contender. Second, in the games humans were represented by Marines and were a genuine threat to both creatures. Third, they on-screen killed kids. That turns me WAY off as kids are sacred and untouchable. Offscreen deaths of kids are acceptable, and still plenty disturbing; but kids are not to be shown getting screwed up.

  • @filmbuff2777

I loved both Aliens & Predator as a kid, but as an adult, I don't think Predator has aged well. I don't think its anywhere near as good as what people say it is. I don't like the creature & find it is too cheesy.
Likewise, I also loved the AvP games, but these days they don't hold up. The PC AvP game from 1999/2000 was scary as hell at the time, but playing it today is frustrating. I like to play as the marines, & aliens just mindlessly fly at you very fast & endlessly respawn. It is frustrating when there is no reload button, so you can't reload between action. If you have about 30 rounds or so left, its a waste to just use it all up at nothing just to have a new magazine.
I also didn't like how it was a solo experience. You had no marines with you. I remember when AvP 2 was being made, previews would say you were in a squad like in the movies. Boy was I let down when as soon as you enter the facility, it "conveniently" caves in just after you enter. The other contrived situations making you only be solo was also annoying (like everyone being too scared to go & rescue that other marine, or being thrown in prison & have to escape by killing human enemies, which become the only enemy nearly until the rest of the game).
AvP 2010 I didn't care for at all. Every marine you met died quickly. There was no squad aspect like the Cameron movie, so it was horribly dated. The first level or two was effective, but once the generic robots that blow up appear it became crap.
I actually liked Colonial Marines. It should have been better, but it did get a lot of things right. The look (the blueish hues & designs of things) & sound design captured the feel of Cameron's film, which the AvP games, especially 2010, never bothered to do. The movie environments were perfectly recreated, & I loved having a motion tracker to equip, as opposed to a generic radar (Isolation showed the idea works).
I liked being part of a squad, something that the previous games didn't bother to do. I also loved playing as the movie marines in online. While I did like the game, I do NOT like or support what Pitchford & Gearscum did. I have never bought another game from them again.
Aliens Dark Descent is also fantastic, & also perfectly captures the ambiance of Cameron's film.
I don't think the AvP crossover was a good idea at all. The Alien franchise is vastly superior to the derivative Predator franchise, & they should have stayed separate. These movies, however, are just as brilliant as the originals compared to Ridley Hack's prequel garbage.

We could have had some great AvP movies had they not ruined it be setting them on Earth present day. Dark Horse comics did amazing work with several stories set in the movies universes. They should have set them in the future timeline. I thought the movies were ok, but they were letdowns in a lot of ways.

With RE and monster hunter i think he watched 10 minutes of streams and decided he knew everything. The slow start where he tries development and fails mostbof the cast is the same way he failed RE. They've had more movies that have been total shit than good movies, yet for some reason they've endured.
For comparison, Star Wars is the same, 2 decent movies, 1 half decent, and 6 terrible ones and a string of boring TV shows, and after 50 years is finally starting to die off... yet both the Aliens and Predators, after the same time of near 50 years, still have an unwavering fan base.
