The entire album "So" is a masterpiece. Peter Gabriel's depth of talent runs through every song. His voice, his lyrics and his music creates tapestries of sound and emotion. Listen to "Don't Give Up (with Kate Bush)" , "Mercy Street" and "Red Rain". They're Deep.

Peter Gabriel was the original lead singer of Genesis with Phil Collins

    • @bilburns1313
      @bilburns1313 4 года назад +9

Phil blending his voice with Peter's when doing backing vocals for years really set Phil up to be the natural replacement when Peter left Genesis - but the band took a bit of time - and many auditions by others - before they realized that fact.

Great live performance of the song here at his Secret World concert back in the 1990s ruclips.net/video/evN6DIGPIJM/видео.html&ab_channel=PeterGabriel
    Lyrics:
    [Verse 1: Peter Gabriel]
Love, I get so lost sometimes
Days pass and this emptiness fills my heart
When I want to run away, I drive off in my car
But whichever way I go, I come back to the place you are
    [Pre-Chorus: Peter Gabriel]
    All my instincts, they return
And the grand façade, so soon will burn
Without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside
    [Chorus: Peter Gabriel]
In your eyes, the light, the heat
In your eyes I am complete
In your eyes I see the doorway
In your eyes to a thousand churches
    In your eyes the resolution
In your eyes of all the fruitless searches
    In your eyes
In your eyes Oh, I see the light and the heat
In your eyes, the light, the heat
    In your eyes
Oh, I wanna be that complete
In your eyes, the light, the heat
    In your eyes
I wanna touch the light, the heat I see in your eyes
    [Verse 2: Peter Gabriel]
Love, I don't like to see so much pain
So much wasted and this moment keeps slipping away
I get so tired of working so hard for our survival
I look to the time with you to keep me awake and alive
    [Pre-Chorus: Peter Gabriel]
And all my instincts, they return
And the grand façade, so soon will burn
Without a noise, without my pride
I reach out from the inside
    [Chorus: Peter Gabriel]
In your eyes your eyes, your eyes
    In your eyes
In your eyes the light, the heat
In your eyes I am complete
In your eyes I see the doorway
    To a thousand churches
    In your eyes the resolution
In your eyes of all the fruitless searches
Oh, I see the light and the heat
    In your eyes
Oh, I wanna be that complete
    In your eyes
I want to touch the light, the heat I see in your eyes
    In your eyes
    In your eyes
    In your eyes
    [Outro: Youssou N'Dour]

The back up vocalist is Youssou N'Dour from Senegal. To see the two of them perform this song live is breathtaking. You're correct about the drum work. Peter Gabriel is known for using pioneering new recording techniques. Rolling Stone ranked "So" #187 of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, and Colin Larkin ranked it #82 of the 1000 Greatest Albums of All Time.

He also started a huge world music festival company, and he has been a human rights activist for decades. 👏👏👏

Youssou N'Dour is fantastic, his album from a little later than this time period "The Lion" (1989) is wonderful. Youssou also sings "Shaking the Tree" with Peter Gabriel on that one. Youssou and Peter also team up on vocals for the remake of the song Peter wrote, "Biko," when it was performed by Manu Dibango, the sax player and singer from Cameroon, on his album "Wakafrika" (1994). i swear i thought Geoffrey Oryema from Uganda was on this as well, but i'm not seeing it here. i'm sure this album is where i learned about him tho.

This is such a great song! No one from the 80’s could forget this song from the “Say Anything” movie. Totally agree the Gabriel duet with Kate Bush, “Don’t Give Up”, off this album would be great to do next. These songs are all different but equally great.

Peter Gabriel was the original lead singer of Genesis. Phil Collins was the drummer during that period (1970-1975).
You should try the following Peter Gabriel’s songs:
Signal to Noise, don’t give up, red rain, rythm of the heat, wallflower, san jacinto, shock the monkey, games without frontiers, family snapshot, Biko.
Sorry for the long list of songs...

For the most part Peter Gabriel is the vocalist but he does play drums keyboard flute oboe and probably a few other instruments because he’s an energetic performer he usually just fronts the band but he writes all of their stuff

    • @lilo5591
      @lilo5591 4 года назад

Not to say he doesn't tour with awesome musicians, but I don't think you do him justice. He is a composer/song writer and instrumentalist as well. He composed the score for "The Last Temptation of Christ"--a true masterpiece--after studying music and instruments of the Middle Eastern world. He is a most remarkable artist.

You’re absolutely right about the drums. There were two different drummers playing two different grooves. Manu Katché played a world style groove while Jerry Marotta played a straight 16th rock beat. Pretty much every track from this album was amazing! I would recommend checking out Red Rain, Don’t Give Up, and Mercy Street

  • @budmaynard5952

The ad-libs at the end of the song were the Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour - one of the most famous singers on the entire African continent. Also, Peter had both of the amazing drummers he works with, Manu Katché and Jerry Marotta play on this, and in addition to a normal drum kit, Manu played talking drum, which has a hide head with strings running down along the body which you can squeeze to change the pitch of the drum as you play. It's common in African and Indian music. If you liked that drumming and you're ready for a much deeper and darker piece, try "The Rhythm of the Heat" from his fourth album, Peter Gabriel (Security). The ending of the song has the entire Ekome Dance Company from Ghana drumming and is very intense. Thanks!
    Peace from SF

Mr. Gabriel has been my fav forever. Was fortunate to see him live decades ago at Greek Theatre in Berkeley when he would stand on the edge of the stage, outstretch his arms and fall into the crowd below (they caught him of course). His music touches my soul deeply, glad you are finding that too.
