Jim Carey. Wow. As a Caps fan, what a flameout. Once Carey was figured out, he just couldn't adjust. Fun fact-Jim's brother, Paul Carey, had a cup of coffee with The Orioles in the early 90's.
I got to meet him when he got sent down to the AHL Providence Bruins and they were on a road trip up in Atlantic Canada. He was a total class act during the toughest period of his hockey career. Left a lasting impression with me.
When I was 12 my older brother took me with him to a memorabilia/card convention in Valley Forge, PA. Was a big Jim Carey fan back in the day 94-95 was my first season as a NHL/Caps fan. My own little theory is that one of the problems was that Carey was way overplayed which sadly is a Caps tradition, he played frickin 83 regular season games in 94-95 then 71 the year after no wonder if the fuel reserve light is on come playoff time. I argue the same was done with both Kolzig and Holtby , why burn out your starter 70+ games if you want a deep playoff run , i think it helped Holtby in 2018 that he got more time on the bench in the regular season.
@Zig Field Because I cover more than just hall of fame players? You clearly don't get that I enjoy covering players pof varying levels of success at the NHL level.
Jim Carey is the perfect example of how bad an idea it was to have GMs vote for the Vezina trophy. It was pretty clear, even at the time, that Carey was not even in the same league as the top goaltenders of that Era. But GMs have always overvalued "Wins" as a goalie statistic, and in '96 Carey was 2nd in the NHL in wins. He won the Vezina because the Sabers were bad, and Hasek went 22-30-6 and had a 2.83 GAA in spite of his .920 save%. Honestly, even given as bad as GMs have been at evaluating goalies and Vezina voting, the bigger surprise than Hasek not winning was them picking Carey over Chris Osgood who went 39-6-5 with a 2.17 GAA on that record setting '96 Red Wings team.
Because save% doesn't take into the quality of shots. Osgood was never a good goalie, let alone a great goalie. A zamboni driver would've won the cup behind those Red Wing teams
@@rivahkillah Oh, I agree whole-heartedly. Osgood was an average goalie on one of the greatest teams of all time. My point was that GMs being terrible and not voting for Hasek (despite his pretty clearly being the best goalie in the league by miles that season) was unsurprising. Picking Carey, out of the remaining goalies who should not have won the Vezina that season, was somewhat surprising.
Thank you, Shannon, for finally making a video on The Net Detective, on my birthday nonetheless! Proud owner of Jim's 94/95 game worn road red jersey, my all-time favorite Capital and the reason why I became a fan back in 1995. It was a pleasure meeting you and your family in Anaheim 2 years ago when we discussed Beaupre, Carey, Hunter, and Bondra, and look forward to the next meetup here in Southern California. #JimCarey #TheNetDetective #Vezina
This is so weird... Just last night I was going through a handful of old hockey cards with my son, and we came across Jim Carey's card (one of maybe a dozen we were looking at). I didn't know the player. In fact in the dim light, I incorrectly read his name as "Casey", and was corrected by my son. I though my son must be mistaken because I figured I'd remember if there was a player with the name, "Jim Carey"... but I took a closer look and sure enough! Then today I see you've post up this otherwise out-of-the-blue career recap of that very player! Time to buy a lottery ticket!
I live in Baltimore Md. I am a San Jose Sharks fan since 1991! Watched the Caps because they are the local team. Jim Schoenfeld was trying to save his job ... And over used Carey! A total of "74" games played counting playoffs? In Carey's second year?? Was never the same after that!
One career video I hope to see is Maxim Afinogenov. People forget how INSANELY electric he was in the mid 2000s for the Sabres but as a Sabres fan he was amazing to watch. Some wild clutch goals, had so much speed, and amazing stick handles. He had some incredible seasons and then faded off after the 06-07 season.
Didn't Jim have a cup of coffee in St Louis after Boston? I think he played in 2 or 3 regular season games and put up good stats on their farm team, but never got a real chance to play.
Man I thought you did this video a couple of years ago. I remember watching him when he was with Wisconsin. Top 10 one hit wonder. I remember when he got lit up like a xmas tree in the NHL playoffs.
I was a bit too young for the Jim Carey area and came up idolizing Olie the Goalie. Never knew what happened with Carey to make the Olie era possible, great video!
Interesting video with a unique perspective. As always, informative and makes us think. A bit off topic, but the title could serve as an inspiration for the video I personally want to see: "The long, solid career of Patrick Marleau!" Make it happen, Shannon! 🙂 Marleau was Captain of the Seattle Thunderbirds when I first started following hockey in Seattle. Since we didn't have an NHL team, I followed his career and became a Sharks fan. Such an amazing guy both on and off the ice.
In all sports there have been guys who play great in the regular season and go flat in the playoffs. A great example of this in baseball is Barry Bonds.
After Carey was traded away to Boston, Bill Ranford was the starter. In the first game of the 1997-98 season, Ranford pulled a groin and Kolzig had to fill in. That was the season where The Capitals went to The Stanley Cup Final. Kolzig was all world and The Capitals rode him. Kolzig was the starting GK in DC for 10 seasons after that IIRC. Olaf Kolzig is one of my favorite all time Capitals. He was goalie coach when Adam Oates was head coach. When Oates was fired and replaced by Barry Trotz, Kolzig became a traveling skills coach and counselor for The Capitals minor league teams. Olie also got his name on The Stanley Cup.
I remember his second year with Boston all signs pointed to a fresh start going into the regular season. After 6 games, he played 3 and Dafoe played 3. Both played equally well. Then, I believe based mostly on personality, Dafoe was declared the starter and Carey played sporadically thereafter.
Keith Jones is on morning radio in the Philly area and someone called in and asked about players who didn't love the game and were just in it for the paycheck. He cited Roman Cechmanek who only played hard when he was getting paid in the regular season, and Jim Carey whose attitude was like, I'm pretty good at this, I guess I'll do this
Sweet video brother! Also do you prefer the yearbooks or the official guide and record book? And have you ever thought of doing a enforcer series? Would love to see a tie domi videos.
Like the video! Very interesting career and didn’t know about it. Would it be possible to explore the career of Jimmy Howard at some point? I always wondered why Detroit kept him as long as they did, I mean he was a solid nhl goal tender but I always seen him as a good backup performer not necessarily the starter that Detroit played him as. Also THG if you read this one I got a story from a Dallas Scout I met at a Flint Firebirds game and he told me some insight into picking people and what stands out to them. Just would like to share the story with you at some point. But keep up the good videos!
I remember how he was supposed to be such a big deal, and I was soooo excited to get his Signature Rookie card way way back when. About as excited as I was when I got my Alexander Daigle rookie card....
They are both valuable now. There's a market for "bust" players these days... Thanks to the internet- eBay specifically- and because of videos like these, shedding light on otherwise forgotten players of the past...
Overlooking Puppa was strange as I believe that was Tampas first trip to the post season. And Hasek really was the defence in Buffalo. The playoff experience also cost Roman Cechmanek after a couple of spectacular seasons with subpar post seasons.
You should do a video on the Adam Oates trades, and how they didn't work for the teams that got rid of him. It's amazing to me that anyone would trade the best passer of all time. Brett Hull tried to give money back to the Blues to keep him. Hull becomes the NHL leading goal scorer if Oates stayed.
I loved the "Net Detective" back when i was a kid... I heard something online about the Penguins in the playoffs finding his Achilles heel in the form of this one hole he would always get scored on and they exploited it and thus ended his career as all teams started to catch on and Jim couldn't fix it fast enough or whatever... I can't verify this but that is what i heard around the grape vine...
I'll sum it up: Detroit Vipers IHL stud, drafted by Bruins, won Calder, was great 01-03 ... after that he was a pylon who's career will be defined by over-stickhandling and being a beneficiary of Jason Allison and Joe Thornton...two elite passers of the generation. Most frustrating Bruin ever. Was thrilled when they traded him for a pick (Milan Lucic).
i remember being so confused that his name was Jim Carey and thought it was fake...I think this was the first time I learned someone could have the same name as someone famous lol ...but I loved it! I have to wonder if there were 32 teams in the NHL back then if he would have been able to make it work...
That’s the reality when you’re the last line of defence, there’s no offensive upside to justify your job, and with only two positions per team it’s just too competitive to be unreliable. Which is why I absolutely couldn’t understand Ottawa signing Matt Carey, er, Murray after a few years of consistently below average play…
Just out of curiosity I looked up the one game where I saw Jim Carey. Ducks vs.Caps 12/13/96. Caps led 3-1 after the first period, Ducks came back and won 5-4, Carey had an .808 save percentage stopped 21 out of 26 shots.
Carey had trouble focusing at critical times. The buzz in DC was that some nights you could look him in the eye and see straight to the back of his head and there was nothing there. Carey was in goal for Fedorov's 5-goal game. Afterward Carey said "No goalie had a chance tonight. Sergei was unstoppable." He wouldn't make the necessary adjustments to improve his play and even though he had a good base to work with he quit on himself.
A formative moment of my childhood as a die hard penguins fan was this guy getting smoked two springs in a row. 95-96 was absolutely brutal for him, had a great regular season and then the Pens just crushed him.
I was about 8-10 years old at a Hartford Wolf Pack game he was playing for Providence Bruins and threw his stick over the glass to me during warmups lol. Still have it to this day always thought it was funny with Jim Carey on the stick
For whatever reason, Washington used to have slow starts and not really play quaility hockey until after the ASG. They also really struggled with Don Beaupre so it just happened Jim Carey can around that time when they were improving and he helped stabilized the position. He played his angles well, had good size, and had a solid glove hand, but he's skating and recovery from that butterfly was ridiculously slow and he got exploited by the HOF loaded Pens.
Hi Shannon, I need you help. I’m from Mexico🇲🇽and I’m going to Minnesota on March. I want to go to a hockey game but I don’t know to which game. 1) Wilds vs Blackhawks: I’m a big Blackhawks fan and I have the authentic Jersey with Kane at the back, it would be a dream to go downstairs in the stadium while the Hawks warm up and with a big letter ask Kane to sign my Jersey (I know is difficult, but they are visitors so probably there would not be to many people with them and it would be easier for him to se me) the problem is that the game is very expensive, for 2 tickets is 65 dlls aprox more expensive than Boston bruins and the seats are at the top of the stadium. 2) Wilds vs Boston Bruins: I also got Wilds Jersey, since is the second time I visit Minneapolis I got something with wilds but anyways… the Bruins game is cheaper and the seats are in a much better zone. In the lowest area and are cheaper than the hawks seats at the top. Also, because of St. Patrick’s day, the ticket includes a tshirt with the Wilds logo inside of a lucky clover so is a good plus too! What would you do if you were me? I need to get the tickets now before they run out or go up in price. Thank you!!!! 😃
Seeing this makes me think that Kolzig was in the Caps system/the Caps backup forever. He was drafted in 89 and spent years in the American League in Baltimore/Portland. At one point he got loaned out to Rochester, and, I think, won a Calder Cup while he was there. When Carey came in and was the hot goalie, I remember thinking to myself "Is Olie going to get a shot at being #1 or is being someone's backup his fate?" Guess we found out the answer to that question really quick.
That is the best jersey the Capitals ever had. Most teams in the late 90s had great looks. The Sabres, Stars, Penguins, Ducks, Lightning, Panthers, Coyotes etc. all had great uniforms.
I think Carey had to get a spinal tap the year after he won the Vezina and the word was that Jim was never obsessed with hockey. I had an autographed jersey of his as well as hundreds of cards. I was a huge fan of his when I was in my teens...sad how things ended for Jim. He probably would have been better off if he never won that Vezina and had so much pressure to perform. I looked him up about a year ago and he lives in an awesome house down in Florida and is a CEO of a medical billing company. I'd love to see a documentary done on Jim.
It has been a while since I thought about it, but if someone asked me without watching this video I would have said he had issues mentally adjusting to success in the NHL. The night after night pressure and the work required. I guess I will still go with that after watching the video. I do remember how popular he was in DC and then it just....stopped.
His issue was athletic in nature. Namely, his lateral movement was sloooooow. If you could make him move before a shot, he was toast. Sure, cross-slot passes are tough for any goalie to stop, but with Carey it didn't need to be that extreme. If you could force him into any side to side movement, you could beat him fairly regularly. Once the NHL got that book on him, it was over.
I remember a good buddy of mine that told me in 1995 that this Jim Carey kid is gonna be better than Patrick Roy....I told him at that time....you might want to keep that to yourself because no one is gonna take you seriously.
If we're talking NHL games as a measure stick then Carey played in 172 regular season games whereas Pelle Lindbergh played 157. Lindbergh played in the Olympics and Canada Cup though and had a more distinguished career with a Stanley Cup finals appearance and more playoff games (23 vs 10 for Carey).
Book on a goaltender can be tough, case #1 was Jonas Hiller who had the worst glove hand I have ever seen. I was watching him and it was obvious, pretty soon pucks from everywhere were coming in high. He was a great positional goalie, but absolutely uncoordinated hand.
With Osgood finishing second to Carey in 1996 cost him the one trophy he really needs for the Hall of Fame. The Red Wings being a juggernaut in 95-96 really skewed people's perception of Osgood. 39-6-5 should have been enough for the Vezina.
Wins and GAA are team statistics, not goalie statistics. Osgood had a save % of .911 that year, saved 14.9 goals above average, and was good for 7.8 point shares (measures a players contribution to standings points earned, in a year the Red Wings set the NHL record for points in a season, Osgood earned 8 of them). Hasek had a .920 save %, saved 43.3 goals above average, and earned 14.8 points shares on a Buffalo team that was below .500 and missed the playoffs. Osgood was a slightly above average goalie, who happened to play most of his career on one of the best teams ever assembled. He never won a major award because he was never even among the best, let alone the actual best, players in the league. He's got a career .905 save % and allowed 15.5 goals above average for his career. He isn't in the HoF because he's not a HoFer.
My most memorable moment of his career is when he sold a dead parakeet to a blind kid. :D
I liked it when he was born out of a rhino!
Now he lives where the beer flows like wine.
What do you want him to do?! Pets heads were falling off!
@@RussXnimbusX42 funniest thing I ever saw in my life
That’s just funny.
I remember Lemieux and Jagr absolutely torching this poor guy non-stop. The wrap on Carey was his inability to move laterally quickly enough.

My first game was Puppa vs Carey. It was 1-0 Lightning. It was in 95 or 96 I believe (I was 10 so it's hard to remember).
In our household we used to call him the "Puppa Scoopa". Just thought it was funny

I find it amazing that both Jim Carey and Jim Carrey were both at their optimal points in their respective careers around the same time!
Coincidence?`
I don't think so.

He played his angles well, had good size, and had a solid glove hand, but he's skating and recovery from that butterfly was ridiculously slow and he got exploited by the HOF loaded Pens.
"How was your day?"
"Not bad. Fell off the jetway again."
The Bruins game should be the better game since both are playoff teams. Kaprizov vs Pastrnak would be fun to watch.
@@TheHockeyGuy thank you man!! I really appreciate that you have answered me and given me your opinion. You’re the best🤙🏼
Jim "The Mask" Carey. As a Caps fan, his customs masks were pretty cool & made this young kid into a fan.
That is the best jersey the Capitals ever had. Most teams in the late 90s had great looks. The Sabres, Stars, Penguins, Ducks, Lightning, Panthers, Coyotes etc. all had great uniforms.
Little known fact: I have a Guy Hebert autographed Ducks Christmas bulb on my tree every year. Yes, I think it’s odd too
Should make one about Tony Amonte or Dirk Graham
I think Carey had to get a spinal tap the year after he won the Vezina and the word was that Jim was never obsessed with hockey.
I had an autographed jersey of his as well as hundreds of cards. I was a huge fan of his when I was in my teens...sad how things ended for Jim. He probably would have been better off if he never won that Vezina and had so much pressure to perform. I looked him up about a year ago and he lives in an awesome house down in Florida and is a CEO of a medical billing company. I'd love to see a documentary done on Jim.
I remember pulling a Jim Carey card and thought I had something.
I’d love to see a career video of Alexi Kovalev
When you brought up his time with the Bruins, I was thinking about Byron Dafoe.
I remember a good buddy of mine that told me in 1995 that this Jim Carey kid is gonna be better than Patrick Roy....I told him at that time....you might want to keep that to yourself because no one is gonna take you seriously.
This video is longer than his NHL career, I think
How tall are you? I’m 5’8 160lbs, should I get a 146 jersey or 150!?!
Pavol Demitra Career video request #3
Is this the shortest career for a vezina winner?
If we're talking NHL games as a measure stick then Carey played in 172 regular season games whereas Pelle Lindbergh played 157. Lindbergh played in the Olympics and Canada Cup though and had a more distinguished career with a Stanley Cup finals appearance and more playoff games (23 vs 10 for Carey).
No mention of his days as a fireman?
Epic.
Jeff Hacket wow, forgot about him.
can please do theo fleury
Lacher was awesome for awhile. I remember having his fleer ultra rookie. Storr was a flop as well lol
These are the stats of LO-HU-SE-HER
Book on a goaltender can be tough, case #1 was Jonas Hiller who had the worst glove hand I have ever seen. I was watching him and it was obvious, pretty soon pucks from everywhere were coming in high. He was a great positional goalie, but absolutely uncoordinated hand.
ONE R, GUYS. Two for the actor, one for the goalie. Carey.
Flash in the pan sadly. I remember having his hockey cards
so who is next, Ron Francis or Doug Gilmour? and how did you skip those 2 guys lol
Steve Mason seemed like a modern iteration of careys career
Ace Ventura, net detective...
I’m not going to lie I was thinking of the actor 😂
I never knew Jim carrey played for the NHL
And while shooting 3 movies in a span of 2 years... SMOKEN!
