  • In this video, I explore the fascinating evolution of the automotive industry and argue why the era of bad cars is over. Drawing from my 35 years of experience as a motoring journalist, I’ll explain how engineering advancements, consumer feedback, and global competition have eradicated the concept of truly bad cars. Join me as I share anecdotes, industry insights, and real-world examples to support this bold claim and invite you to reconsider your perspective on modern vehicles.
From the clunky and unreliable cars of the past to today’s meticulously crafted machines, the automotive landscape has transformed dramatically. Whether it’s the impressive strides made by Chinese manufacturers or the consistently high standards of Japanese and Korean brands, it’s clear that the bar has been raised across the board. Even brands that were once considered inferior have stepped up their game, making it almost impossible to find a genuinely bad car on the market today.
What do you think? Do you agree that the automotive industry has moved beyond producing bad cars, or do you have examples that challenge this view? As mechanic who was in the motor trade for nearly 25 years all late modern cars are designed to cost you money where as a 25 or 30 year old car will last you for virtually ever we've just routine servicing

This is true. Thing is with ULEZ and expensive road tax it's hard to own an old car thesedays.

What is considered "bad" about cars has changed over the years but has far from gone away. There has never been a greater need to do your own very thorough and careful research before buying a car to ensure you don't end up with an expensive ornament on the drive!! When I did my apprenticeship late 70's early 80's cars where very basic and bad ones broke down a lot or died at an early age due to corrosion. These days a bad car is one where the manufacturer has designed an engine to be economical to the extent where the rings have too low sealing pressure resulting in oil contamination and early death, or fitted a wet belt or put dangerous batteries in it or set the service intervals too long to attract new vehicle buyers knowing full well it will die early! There are very few truly "good" cars these days and even fewer trust worthy manufacturers!

Mr Tench8, totally agree with your assessment. Wet belts, dpf's, & sensors etc, all troublesome & unnecessary.

As a mechanic of just over 20 years iv never seen so many cars only a few years old some cases not even out of warrenty breaking in fairly catastrophic and expensive ways I would even argue cars have went back to the 80s in terms of breaking down at the edge of the road

I’ve had this conversation with my Dad, and you only have to go back to the 80s to see how far the industry has developed. The Skoda Estelles, Lada Rivas, FSO Polonez, Hyundai Ponys, Kia Prides, Yugo 45s and Sanas of the world have all disappeared. Safety, rust-proofing and reliability were all appalling on those cars with laughable levels of refinement and standard equipment. The more mainstream cars of the time from Ford and Vauxhall weren’t much better; like the Vauxhall Cavalier (my Dad’s 87 model rusted to oblivion).
Efficiencies in production plus galvanised body panels, combined with a greater emphasis on safety means there are no bad cars now. I used to see tons of cars broken down on the motorway when going on holiday in the 80s and 90s, now there’s barely any. So people who weren’t around then, don’t know how well off they are.
If anyone complains about a modern car, go drive a Yugo 45 for a week.

How predictable that you'd go to the stereotypical Lada & Skoda as examples.

*“Owners of cutting edge, tech-filled BEVs and PHEVs are experiencing problems that are of a severity level high enough for them to take their new vehicle into the dealership at a rate three times higher than that of gas-powered vehicle owners,” Frank Hanley, senior director of auto benchmarking at JD Power, said in a statement.*

They might not be bad when new but a lot of modern cars are built for a price and are of poor quality using plastics inside engines most of these will not make 100k without serious problems, the best made cars that were built to last ended mid 2000s..

Any new car with less than a 5 star Euro NCAP safety rating could be classed as being a bad car, especially given that the safety technology is far superior now than in the past. I would also argue that planned obsolescence and both the availability and cost of spare parts should be included in this description as the total cost of ownership could be much higher than the customer expects or is deemed fair by the consumer.

There may be no bad new cars but new cars are all so similar and have very little soul! That's why I'd have an 80s or 90s car with it's little niggles any day! You obviously know what I mean as you drive an old BMW.

I suggest most vauxhall first gen EVs, especially Corsa and Astra. They are still trying to dump them on the market for less than half price?

The electronics kill some cars as they require specialist to identify fault. Supply of spares is bad by some manufacturers. Recycled plastic can be very poor. Some metal used especially from China can be very poor quality (as Italian cars had in the 70s) Chinese electrics can be corrupt and most have built in fail dates. The main thing I can’t understand is how ugly some vehicles are. Tesla is probably the worst quality overall. I would like to see less electronics and sensors. Perhaps only manufacturers of low volume would be able to produce as mass production have too many governed requirements. I prefer the 2006 period where most cars can be maintained and serviced by good quality garages. These cars you drive and are not controlled by gimmicks, which manufacturers like to call “safety aids” but in fact are just expensive gimmicks which have to be reset by the manufacturer agents when faulty or after an accident. All these gimmicks increase the insurance costs as they are expensive to repair. Modern day sculptured lights are ridiculously expensive to replace, with some headlights costing well over £1K to replace as an mot failure.

A lot of the complaints are about repairs, saying “that a car that is hard to work on is bad”
I’ve worked on many new modern cars, I’ve also worked on cars from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s etc.
There is way less engine space, and that’s about it
They’re designed to be pulled apart, the thing is old cars even if the job took the same amount of time required less to pull apart
I think it’s a lot of cranky people not willing to change the way they tackle mechanical jobs. They’re afraid to spend the time to remove parts x, y, z to get to parts a and b
People forget that modern cars are more fuel efficient, more powerful, safer, and more convenient
You can’t have a more efficient/powerful/comfortable/safe car but have literally nothing surrounding the engine like a 90’s Corolla or an 80’s ranger 🤷🏻‍♂️

Modern cars are worse....too much technology and software dependency.....too fragile in the harsh environments of a car engine etc..
A friend of mine is a Mercedes mechanic..owners with cars just a couple of years old are scrapped as too expensive to repair simple faults in microprocessors and chips etc..

There are so many good cars but on the other hand there a some bad cars were many years there were some very good cars reliable but unfortunately due mainly the USA regulations the car companies have to comply with the USA regulations but if you buy a car that is not sold in the or even built in the USA it is a good car a with Suzuki and we own a Suzuki Baleno no direct injection so no carbon build up but Toyota have got around the carbon problem they also have port injection and Toyota and Lexus are considered the most reliable brands in the world and that is the most important thing when buying a car and there is only two countries in tbe world that make reliable cars that is Japan and lndia forget the rest l also own a Toyota Hilux 1997 ute the best carburatored 4 cylinder vehicle l ever owned and our Suzuki Baleno was and still are made in lndia although Japanese manufacturers build there vehicles are and were built in other countries because in Australia they built Toyota Camerys and if course Australians bought a lot of Camerys and l would count Australia used to build some very good reliable cars and Ute's that all ended in 2017 along with the Toyota Camerys but l still see regularly see 30 year old Holden's and Ford Falcons still driving around and many 30 or 40 year old Toyota Camerys Corollas and Hiluxes driving around and even old Mercedes-Benz well what happened with Mecedes Benz not reliable now same as all European and British makes the yard stick is Australia most Australians really like reliable vehicles that's why there are Toyota's Mazdas Honda's Suzuki's lzusus the reliable Nissan's and Mitsubishis Lexuses the best luxury car available and the most reliable brand in Australia and second is Toyota as for car sales Toyota has been the number one seller for the past 25 years and the only brand that may knock them of number one is Mazda

But watch out for some nissans and mazdas
