    many Navajo landowners have defended Chaco Canyon from oil & gas companies since WWII when the US started illegal uranium mining. the landowners are persistent on letting the US government know that the entire area is not to be touched. not a 10 mile radius, & not just the ruins.

  • @keote
    @keote Год назад +25

    What's ironic about this is they title this as if the Navajo supporters are "landowners".. actually, they don't own anything. The treaties itself explain this, the members of the tribe are considered 'stewards of the land'. No member actually owns the land in the sense that one holds a deed, these tribal members are able to own a homesite lease. Or in many cases, a grazing permit. These leases does not entitle ownership. When and if an oil company comes onto tribal lands, it deals with the tribal government. 99% of the profits are for the benefit of the oil company, tribal government gets a small percentage. The so-called 'landowners' will get crumbs if they are lucky, meaning, they don't actually get any money. MAYBE the tribal government will fix the roof on a chapter house, maybe fix the steps on the community center, fix a few potholes. That's it. Deb Holland is looking beyond a paycheck, she's looking out for the sacred lands that Navajos allegedly hold sacred. Navajos walk in Beauty? Seems a few of them are chasing a rainbow with promises of a paycheck.. its nothing but a mirage.

      The area around Chaco is Navajoland and Navajos should have had a voice on this matter. Instead...liberals, environmentalists, and Pueblos (who no longer live in the Chaco Canyon region for centuries) made all the decisions. In this case, Navajos should make decisions on lands they've lived on for the last one thousand years (including Alaska and Canada...places the Navajos have lived in).

      @@c.m.redhouse7667 So because Pueblos no longer reside in that area, it's somehow related to the 'liberals'?.. huh?.. strange logic. In case you've been a coma, there's been a continuous fight against this type of bullying from the oil companies with government, they ignore the people. Look at the sacred Bear Ears, where trump and republicans did everything they could to drill oil. Thanks to Obama and Biden, they put a stop to it. Look to the north where all Natives gathered to stop oil the Keystone pipelines, Obama stopped it. The day trump was in office, he let it run right thru Native American lands..Get it straight, the Navajos and every other indigenous people in what is called North American continent was all ours.. we are now in less than 10% of what we had. We need to do what we can to collectively protect them, not blame each other for what the europeans stole.
