For those that do not understand the situation fully: The utility company will not pay nor install for free the poles to run lines to their house. the poles cost roughly $5k-10K each, then you also have to pay to transport it, then pay to get it installed. All said it done, depending on far the transmission line is, these people would have to pay up to $50-100K just to get the power lines to their homes. Then they have to pay for electricity they used, so it's a net loss to get electricity. Yes, this is in the United States, northern Arizona. No, the Navajo Nation Gov't will not pay for this, again this is a Capitalist country, "pay to play."

Check this out... say your electric bill $60/mo., which is probably low. They said 200k homes in the video. In 1 MONTH, that's 12 MILLION going to the electric company.
Now, if you're 1 lone rancher 175 miles from the nearest pole, that's a little different, maybe you should chip in a little, but we're talking less than 50 mi, and I would think way less in most cases, like under 2 miles.
@blobmonster9494 Correct, that should be the norm, 1 pole and 1 transformer. These people don't live close to a transmission line and usually have to pay for multiple poles, up to 10, depending on location. Then there's the additional cost of hiring a GIS/surveyor to provide dimensions of their site. There are more costs and paperwork because the Navajo's do not own their land, they are leasing it from their Gov't. See another comment posted on this thread regarding creating an electrical substation and the cost involved. So yeah, it's not unusual for you in a semi-developed area, where you are in close proximity to a transmission line.
@blobmonster9494 Yes, they should try to look to alternative means, maybe even a co-op to get connected, but a lack of education and money keeps them disconnected. Most of them are of the mindset, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," meaning they have accepted using kerosene lanterns, flashlights, and generators to help them get by. The person in the video is using the media to show that PV can help, which is a start, and hopefully change the minds of the stubborn.
I bought my new house in Visalia, California, and got free solar panels with a federal rebate. I've also never paid an electric bill.
@@lalodaniels1388 It's great to own your parcel of land, but the Navajo's do not own their land, they lease it from their Gov't. There are no programs assist homesite lease's, only homeowner's.
The world needs more warriors like Brett. It is criminal in a nation with so many opportunities to have denied the People that saved our butts in WW2 a simple luxury like electricity. ❤

A very real scene across the Navajo Nation, no water and electricity. Some people hv asked well why can’t they just drill to the ground water? They can’t drill bc of regulations and bc uranium mining back in the day hv polluted aquifers. A lot of natives hv resorted to gas powered generators and few fortunate people hv solar power.
My sisters and I have been living in between the Zuni and Navajo nations in the middle of nowhere for 14 years now completely off grid. You can have everything you have in the city you just do things a bit different. You have to be willing to change! Become a "Changeling" and change your world.

This is really sad that the electricity is literally right there and the us doesn’t give them power.
The U.S. has privatized the utilities and the rules of Capitalism states that, "you must pay to play." So those without the funds to buy the power poles ($5k-10K each) are not able to receive such luxuries.

@@SylviaAndrews-vy8zr The Navajo people do not own their land, they lease it from their Gov't. So maybe the power company is paying to use the Gov't land, but it doesn't pay the people who live there.
@@presidentcamacho yea you right about pay to play and capitalism but it’s still sad because of the double or triple taxes we pay for our cars, house, school, churches, our jobs, and etc. the money we get taxed is poorly managed and of course higher ups take their cut under the table.

They can run some water lines as well. Navajos nation is notoriously water insufficient, and the Colorado run right through.

dang so many years Navajo Nation didn’t have water and electricity plumbing it makes you wonder and think about this every four years we select president of Navajo nation 50 year all of these presidency that was in the office wha t did they talk about what did they do for us all these years some of our parent grandparent they’re gone , they’re not here anymore I wish they could see this we suffer all these years growing up still yet Half of our Navajo people don’t have running water still no electricity no plumbing even to this day we have a bad road itmakes you wonder 💭 what the hell , so those who receive in electricity plumbing water they are probably really happy and joyful it’s something good you could be jumping up and down and screaming and pray more power to Navajo nation to us many more blessings we don’t want to be stressed and depressed how about our life sheep horses cow animal donkey chicken rooster pig turkey rabbit sheep dog 🪶

If reparations are to be paid in the US it should go to the Native Americans first. Because they are the ones that really deserve it. I would love to see it happen and I am only a 1/2 breed and will never ask for anything. Good on ya Navajo Peoples. Stay brave.

The way that the U.S. Government treats us, we may as well be a Sovereign Nation at this point. But sadly, the Navajo Nation is part of the U.S. on a reserved piece of Northern Arizona. Yes, they pay income taxes like every American.

Your people decided to be separate from the rest of the people in the US. Your people were allowed to live tax free on reservations and have tax free casinos and the power lines you see going by are ultimately paid for by the taxpayers of the untited States and not by the Navajo that decided to be outside on thier reservations.
