I have a 2001 Jeep XJ that has 3:55 gear ratio with 33in tires and needed a new gear, however the actual location to line up the numbers is on the bottom in the 6 I clock position not on the top like he says in the video. You will see a small bump in the 6o clock position where you line the numbers up then turn a little towards the 5 o clock position for the pin to hold the sensor in place and it worked perfectly. I followed the video and ended up with a non working speedometer.

Nice Video, However, I think you got where the numbers line up completely wrong. Gear numbers on housing that correspond to the gear you just put in should be facing the 6PM position. Once placed back in housing turn a tad back to 5pm position to seat completely. Dude, I do not think you speedo gears would even touch inside the way you installed it. . Way to be super cool in vid though...

Be sure to line up the appropriate numbers with the raised 'dot' on the transfer case on the bottom. Be careful not to do it like it's first described - *NOT with the numbers between the fork.

This was great but the part where you align your numbers was wrong, as least for me and my '97 wrangler. There is a little dot at the bottom of your transfer case where you line up your number with, not centered withe the bracket, it actually works out to be the bottom hook part where you will line up the numbers. Otherwise you gears will not engage and your speedometer will be zero like mine. I thought I must have broke the sensor so I bought a new one and spliced it in, and that didn't fix it. It was just not lined up correctly. Once I did that, it worked perfectly. Save yourself the grief and money and just line it up right. My sensor was just fine :(

I have been fighting the speedometer thing since December when I had transmission rebuilt. Replaced both speed sensors and still didn't work. I spun the gear and my speedometer turned. Hoping this fix you talked about fixes my speedometer. Thank you so much for your comment.

Anyone wondering about the gear numbers, bump, and 6 o clock position relevance. I looked in my manual and couldn't find anything except changing speedo cable in the index. Didn't delve through every section so if y'all know where it is let me know.
Anyways I've heard 6 or 5 o clock position for the numbers unlike what the video shows you, but what I've seen is start at 6 o'clock and rotate towards 5 o'clock. Best to leave old o ring on and try it first. If wrong it won't go in as easy. Once you got it figured pop it out and put new oring on and put it back in.
There are slots for the bracket claws to dig into so get it to the position and make sure all of that lines up and good to go.

Ayy thanks for the vid. Does that speedo-gear fit in there pretty tight? Mine seems to be loose. And my speedo has been all over the place and is causing my transmission to act up. No joke, I have reason to believe it will mess with the transmission shifting properly

why did you change it? was the speedometer dead? what about your RPM meter? my speedometer dropped dead all of a sudden but TAC/RPM meter is good. Code reader produces nothing - no error code. It points to a mechanical problem. So, I am guessing my gear drive speedometer is broken.

You're doing it wrong. No need to disconnect the electrical, the index numbers point to 6 o'clock (i.e. down), and you're supposed to lubricate the new gear with ATF too.
