  • Airlines will now have to pay you when they mess up.
The Department of Transportation just approved a new rule to make airlines give you an automatic refund if your flight is canceled or delayed or if they lose your bags.
It’s a game-changer for U.S. travel. We talked about it with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

...2022 data shows that the worst was less than 3 or so denied boardings per 10,000 passengers.

You could, in theory, not fly, but that isn't an option for a significant number of people. The myth of the "true free market" is sadly just a myth due to how capitolism trends towards consolidation and monopolies. After a certain point, "voting with your wallet" doesn't matter because you have to use the service either way and thus the more consolidated a specific industry is, the less actual power the consumer individually has.

The greedflation they are assaulting Americans with is lining the already overstuffed pockets of CEO's with cash, while leaving working Americans, poor Americans, and Senior Citizens strapped, trying to make ends meet. The "free market" as you call it, is what's led to the extreme wealth inequality in this country. Workers & tax payers aren't going to take it anymore. The only things that are going to stop this corporate overreaching is legislation to make them start paying taxes that they should have paid all along; a wealth tax; and, a windfall profits tax. That’s great. Now we need that for airports, as well.
Recently, my poor mother took a flight and we set it up that she’d have wheelchair assistance from the point she disembarked to the next gate (on her connecting flight) or arrival portal.
She had no issues departing or with the connecting flight. But when she arrived at our home airport the chair was there but no one to push her. She tried to find someone to help, but it was late and there was no one. I tried to find someone to help at a ticket counter, but was told I’d have to go to baggage claim and ask the clerk there (which wasn’t going to help - she had already started walking).
Mom has interstitial lung disease (Covid’s enduring “gift”). She could barely breathe when she came through the arrival port. I found a wheelchair to take her from there to baggage claim & the car.
She ended up in the ER and a week in hospital. It was touch and go.
Alaska Airlines told us it’s the fault of PDX as all they do is inform the airport for wheelchair transport. Then they tell me they could have given me special clearance to meet her at her point of disembarkation and “next time” I should ask. Like that helps now. 😡
Mom nearly died. She is still mostly in bed a month later and can only walk a little bit before she gets winded.

    • @starventure

How do you define a screw up? If you whine about a delayed flight, and the feds lean on the airline to state the reason why the flight was late and the airline digs up the reason and it is safety related...your whining was all for naught, because once safety is invoked your complaint is meaningless. They can point to federal law that dictates how to do things, all you can point to is your mouth.

Wow, I hope this doesn't run into any roadblocks. The last two times I've flown out of my home airport, the planes have been significantly delayed due to mechanical problems (two different airlines) to the degree that we had to deplane and wait for another airplane to be available. Both times, this resulted in arriving at my destination HOURS late, one time it was the middle of the night and I couldn't even get a rental car because the rental car counters at the airport closed. I had to uber to my hotel and then back the next day to finally get a vehicle. It would have been nice for some compensation.

I wish there was a way to force airlines to make passenger seats more comfortable. They’ve forced so many seats to maximize profit, now there’s no leg room (and I’m short), pax are literally shoulder to shoulder, and often there’s no way to lean a seat back because you end up in the person behind your seats face.
Beyond uncomfortable, it’s an actual health risk to fly now.

What is Southwest Airlines doing for all the passengers they left stranded in Austin after the solar eclipse? I'll tell you what they did, NOTHING! We had to pay for our own hotel, transportation, and meals for the extra day we were stuck there. We arrived 2 and a half hours before our flights, which we thought was reasonable, but the line to check our bags was over 4 hours long, so of course we missed our flight. Thousands of people missed their flights because Southwest had more passengers than they could reasonably accommodate with their given resources. They rebooked our flights and got us home, but are refusing to reimburse anything.

Ugh. I had an airline move my connection to another airport. Problem was my new connecting flight took off before my first flight did. When I called to try and fix this, I was told it wasn't their problem I couldn't schedule flights that worked. The fact my initial flight was supposed to connect in a totally different state didn't matter, somehow it was my fault I wouldn't be able to make a negative 2 hour layover in Atlanta when I was still waiting to board my previous flight. I don't even know how many times I had to call before I got someone on the line who actually listened long enough to not blame me and say I'd have to buy a whole new flight. I ended up with a several hour layover in LaGuardia, but that's better than having to invent a time machine to make the connection.

If you pay for a higher threshold of speed and you consistently don't get it, you should get a refund. If you travel and pay for temporary international service for your cell phone, and it doesn't work, you should yet a refund. Bottom line you should get a refund for any service you pay for that doesn't work as it was supposed to, or you just straight up didn't get. It's theft otherwise.

These seem like good changes and I'm supportive of them - as long as they don't provide airlines with loopholes to cause more chaos. Maybe airlines will prefer to giving refunds immediately instead of helping customers change flights when a cancellation or delay happens? I can see them giving a refund on a flight booked early at a good deal, cancelling the flight, refunding, then charging higher prices for customers to get a replacement one. I hope these laws will eliminate these possibilities as well.
