    The 1911. This venerable sidearm was designed by the legendary John Moses Browning and has been a cornerstone of American firearms culture since its adoption by the U.S. military in, you guessed it, 1911. It saw action in two world wars, Korea, and Vietnam, proving its mettle time and time again. The 1911's rugged reliability, powerful .45 ACP round, and classic lines have made it an enduring favorite among soldiers and civilians alike.
    Now, let's talk about the differences between the original 1911 and its successor, the 1911A1. While the two pistols look quite similar at first glance, there are a few key updates. The 1911A1, introduced in 1924, features a shorter trigger, a longer grip safety spur to prevent hammer bite, and improved sights for better target acquisition. These changes might seem minor, but they significantly improved the pistol's handling and comfort, making the 1911A1 the go-to sidearm for American forces for many decades.
    In today's world, the 1911 still holds a place of honor among enthusiasts and professionals. It's found in the holsters of law enforcement officers, competitive shooters, and concealed carry holders who appreciate its combination of stopping power and heritage. Even with the advent of polymer-framed, high-capacity pistols, the 1911's timeless design and unmatched ergonomics keep it relevant. It's a testament to the old adage: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
    For those of us who cherish tradition but crave modern functionality, there are plenty of ways to bring an original 1911 into the 21st century. You can start with upgraded sights, such as a red dot. A match-grade barrel, and a high-quality trigger job can also enhance performance while preserving that classic feel. Consider a rail for mounting lights or lasers to your World War 1 issues 1911. These updates ensure your 1911 remains as effective today as it was over a century ago, all while honoring its distinguished legacy.

      Dude like any 1911 after WW2, I wouldn't have a problem these mods. But this is a WW1 era gun! This hurts my history loving heart. I so badly want an A1 (could probably afford a WW1 model but can't justify the expense). I also have a Polish Tokarev variant from the late 50s which I adore along with a bunch of WW2 era bolt guns. I want to shoot an old guns for the history and experience of shooting old guns. If I want a pistol with a red dot and a light mount, I'd buy a modern gun with mounts for a red dot and light. I've got to believe that you could find a modern 1911 ready made to accept a red dot and a light that would be way cheaper than buying a WW1 vintage and doing this to it. This feels like hate bait and I've fallen for it because I fucking hate it

They were sporterized because they were cheap options in calibers that would take most any game you would encounter. Taking a decent condition USGI WWI 1911 and molesting it in this manner in the year of our Lord 2024 is painful to see. • @RenegadeADV
      @RenegadeADV 2 месяца назад +11

      @@D5TYLE 1911's take a bit of tuning to the ammunition, this is because ammunition comes in a wide variety of loads for them, this is incredibly prevalent in the 10mm variants as some 10mm ammo comes loaded in essentially a .40 Smith and Wesson powder charge, on the other end you have the original Norma spec that many shooters will find uncomfortable to shoot because it kicks so hard.
      When I first got my 10mm it was not wanting to shoot the ammo I was trying to feed it which was defensive ammunition loaded hot, so I tried a few different springs, settled on a 24# (it came with a 16#) and with that it started running perfectly and has ever since as long as I run the higher powered ammunition.

    • @stevebutters306
      @stevebutters306 2 месяца назад

      1911s are so funny. My Hellcat eats whatever crap I run through it, not a single failure so far after several hundred rounds. I'm not exclusively talking shit here; I find the idea of needing to "tune" your gun to function properly an exceptionally fun idea. I am not being sarcastic lol.

    • @RenegadeADV
      @RenegadeADV 2 месяца назад +6

      @@stevebutters306 That is because the hellcat is a 9mm, and 9mm's produce nowhere near the energy of a hot loaded .45 or a 10mm, mind you we are talking about the energy the slide of the gun has to eat here to function.
      Very specifically the 10mm has a case capacity of 24.1 grains where as the 9mm has a volume of 13.3 grains. You are talking almost twice the volume for powder here. As well when it comes to the physics, in a 10mm you're looking at a 175-200 gr bullet, in a .45 200-230, but in a 9mm that is a 115 gr bullet.
      Thus you have a much larger powder charge and a much heavier projectile that a .45 or 10mm pistol is counter acting to function properly. When you throw in the different loading's available for those larger caliber cartridges all of the sudden you can no longer have a one size fits all solution like you can with 9mm where the majority of rounds on the market are loaded to a certain spec and perform fairly close to each other.
      The other component of where you can run into issues with 1911's especially older 1911's is that the original pistol was designed to shoot ball, as hollow-points became commonplace feeding issues became part of the landscape because the original geometry of the feed ramp needed to be changed to accommodate them otherwise feeding issues can occur.

If it was a hyper gucci OG 1911 with a threaded barrel and tridium night sights, with an X300 turbo, that'd be cool. If it was a straight abomination of memes and jankiness, I could see that too, but instead it's just a gun of half measures. I have a Colt .25 vest pocket pistol that was made around the same year of this 1911. It has had some engraving done to it and I wish I had got the story from the Veteran that carried it. Unfortunately he passed away without sharing. I still got the feeling that it was special to him with the quality of the scroll work and a well loved patina. Still in great working condition till this day.

    Yes, there were millions of M1911 pistols made before, during and after the War to End all Wars.
    In 1927, Army Ordnance made 'improvements' to the design leading to the M1911a1. It was initially issued on a 1-1 replacement basis for M1911 pistols as they reached the end of their service life. There were also a significant number of M1911 pistols written off as 'war loss' by Expeditionary Force soldiers and Marines who wanted to take theirs home with them. Just like after WW2, with the M1911a1 pistols.
    It was absolutely likely that Marines fighting in the Pacific in 1942 would have been carrying M1911 pistols. US Army soldiers who fought in Tunisia, entirely possible they were carrying the M1911. But by the time of Operation Overlord, the US Airborne troops were armed with M1 Carbines, M1 Garands, and M1911a1 pistols. CPT Winters having an M1911 instead of an A1 was mere chance, not supply chain issues, nor was it by design. To highlight this, Airborne units were regularly swapping out their M1928 and M1 Thompsons for the simplified M1A1 Thompson and the M3 Grease Gun.
    I know of a National Guard battalion that carried the M1911a1 until 1991 when they turned in their M1911a1 pistols on a 1-1 for the new M9. About 18 months later, they'd turn in their M16a1 rifles for new M16a2 rifles. Their tankers kept their M3a1 Grease Guns until they completed their Iraqi Freedom deployment in 2004.

    The 1911A1 couldn’t have seen *any* combat in WWI because it did not see production until late 1924. In the middle, and also fielded in WWII, was the Transition Era 1911, which was blued, had the older markings, but had some of the A1 updates. Those guns are very rare, but they were issued in WWII.

    The really funny thing is that gun only needs a double stack frame to still be a completely viable modern pistol. lol

    • @gameragodzilla
      @gameragodzilla 2 месяца назад

      @@ninjagold9244 Yeah that too. And one thing I really like about the Para-Ordnance frames is they're 90% compatible with standard 1911 parts. Only the trigger bow, mag catch, grips, grip screws, magwell (if you want one), and of course magazines are proprietary, but everything else is standard 1911 parts. They started out as conversion kits for existing 1911s back in the late 80's, with the full guns only coming in 1990.
      You legit could take this "modernized" WW1 1911, transfer most of the parts onto the Para frame, and get a double stack .45ACP 1911 with a red dot and light. Hell, my Para frame didn't come with a weapon light, so I had a Novak rail pinned and welded onto the frame and it works very well.

    Apparently, everyone has either forgotten or refuses to acknowledge Col. Jeff Cooper heavily (for the time period) modified a vintage military Colt 1911 to better suit his style of shooting. The rear sight and part of the slide was milled off and a fully adjustable one put in its place, and the front sight also replaced. The beaver tail safety replaced with a modified version which is now standard on high end 1911/2011 models, and he even stripped off the bluing and had the frame chrome plated. Bothered that a collectible gun is now lost? Look at it this way…all the remaining unmolested military Colts just went up slightly in value since there is now one less in the world
