    It's crazy how this brutal murderer of a man found himself acting so selflessly at his final moments. No matter how much evil he commited, at his core, he could held his deepest conviction close to his heart. He saved his country, he put canute in power, he pushed thorfinn away from his path of vengeance. That moment of truth revealed his entire character and his journey became a complete circle. A fucking masterpiece.

    09:02 Makoto Yukimura (Vinland's mangaka) : "I really wasnt sure how askeladd felt about thorfinn,Askeladd might not have cared in the slightest if thorfinn had died anytime anywhere. But, when he was on the verge of the end of his life, he made sure thorfinn didnt come with him. He pushed away Thorfinn thinking he shouldn't have to die with him and to my surprise, i hadn't thought about him like that right up until i was going to write this scene. There were Askeladd's own words,i cant think otherwise. Askeladd had actually cared for thorfinn to an extent and even i didnt know about that up until that scene."

      I remember some writers talking about how they feel like their characters have thoughts of their own, or how they speak for themselves without the writer having to consciously create the dialogue, almost like a tulpa. I wonder if Makoto felt this way about Askeladd.

    • @discipleofthecapedbaldy962
      @discipleofthecapedbaldy962 8 месяцев назад +71

      That's awesome. You know a writer is doing phenomenal work when the characters have been given so much life they start surprising even the author. Yukimura has created something truly special with Vinland Saga and it'll only appreciate with time. If he nails the ending (and I think he will) it'll be a contender for the greatest manga ever written. I mean, it already is, but a terrible ending can destroy all the previous good work. Can't see that happening here though.

The best thing is that in the end he truly did care for Thorfinn in his own way he was focus enraged and in battle and got shocked out of it when he heard Thorfinn!! Screaming at him not to get involved because if he would the people will come after him as well, he also doesn’t tell Thorfinn Floki set up his father cause he wants him to go on with life😭😢😢Those words hit so damn hard “How do you plan to live your life” growing up in my life style I never thought I would see 26 but here I am this show is truly life changing!!🔥🔥

    Don't know for sure, but I think the moment Askeladd has his sword out on the King and then it zooms in on Askeladd revealing his real name is actually a callback to episode 4 when Thors beats Askeladd in the duel and says "A true warrior doesn't need a sword". The same stance, very similar perspectives, both being interrupted, and even perhaps the motion of how both swung the sword. The symbolism of how both men sacrificed themselves to save others.

    6:31 That’s exactly like the same way this scene astounds me, when I watched this episode on November 26, 2023. I had to watch this scene quite a few times, just to get myself convinced that it actually happened.
    In the end, Askeladd left such an impactful legacy that only few anime character did such in Anime. Indeed, he killed Thorfinn's father, but the transition of him being a murderer to a mentor figure to Thorfinn, giving him advice while immerging on duel and ultimately telling him to be free from the warrior life goes to show how great Askeladd had become throughout this series. Furthermore, he left a great impact on Canute of becoming a rightful king (a ruthless king later on), who used to be so naive. So, at the end of the season 1, I realized one thing that Vinland Saga is not just a transitional story of Thorfinn or Vikings, but is a story of some strong characters who left some contribution to one another.
    Honestly, this might be the best reaction I've seen since I started watching and following your channel.

    Really is just a prologue, establishing the baseline of Thorfinn's life and the world he grew up in. Second season is where the story starts truly maturing into something even greater and makes Thorfinn one of the greatest protagonists you can hope for. Also RIP Askeladd, just a 10 out of 10 character right there.
    Also also, your reaction to this season and this episode has been priceless! Never wanted to give a reactor a big old hug before, but here we are XD. First of all, thanks for sharing this journey with us, it's always beatiful when people reunite and share such feelings. Cannot wait for the second season.
    There are few show that hit as hard, hxh, fma, clannad, just to name a few. But what's great with Askeladd death, is that you suddendly feel the emptiness Thorfinn is going through.

    When King Sweyn tells Askelad: "Wales or Canute, choose one" he fails to realise that the actual offer is: "Wales, Canute, or you life, choose two"
    It is at a time like this when we see what is most important to Askelad.

    What makes this story so mature is it’s choice to use subtlety to convey the complexity of a few simple messages. As opposed to explaining a complex idea in very simple and straightforward manner. It’s a choice to explore depth as opposed to breadth, which I feel is what distinguishes the writing of Vinland Saga from a story like Code Geass or Attack on Titan which focus on making the world complex and interesting before getting to the core their characters and message.
