- The 5th Home Gemmology webinar held during the covid-19 lockdown period with the support of CIBJO - The World Jewellery Confederation, is on a gemmologist's perspective of René Lalique jewellery. The discussion will be essentially around the gem materials used by famed French Art Nouveau artist, illustrated mostly with the vast collection housed at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon, Portugal. His choices from coloured gemstones to biogenic gem materials, diamonds and glass, are related to the available sources at the period when he created his masterpieces in the late 1800s to the early 1900s.

This was super interesting! I love Lalique and Art Nouveau in general, and it was great to hear about it from a gemmological point of view.

A valuable perspective. Thank you for sharing your expertise.
Hey, amazing video.
Can you share the name of the museum to which Lalique donated his material?
Please forgive me the terrible delay. The Museum is Museu Calouste Gulbenkian
Hi thank you! So is the usual information one reads not correct that black opal was discovered 1907 in Lightning Ridge? Thank you
Lightning Ridge opals were reportedly discovered in the 1880s, with production starting in 1903. In Queensland, opals were already known also since the late 19th century.
