you're right. when it comes to POPPY, shes a box of chocolates. just how it goes, you gotta Flux and flow with it. i like Say Cheese and Eat, but prefer this POPPY. natural voice, crazy clothes and stare at the camera. if we're lucky, we get an "oooOOOH"! thx U.R.!
Great reaction- and nice to see you picking on the finer points in this song- there is so much detail to enjoy. And you know she is probably going to blow at some point, but it is never entirely clear when, how or if at all- in this one, she draws it out as long as possible, then goes quiet and sinister, then hits detonate. As you say, there is some great harmony in the chorus counterpoint, and loads of contrast in her vocals- I like the fact she lets rip with her natural voice too, and the fact that the song gets impaled on its own chorus before coming apart at the seams. The singing / screaming counterpoint is also perfect. Some people have been saying this is basic alt-rock, but I don't agree- for instance, not many people would think to start their summer belter with 40 seconds of Noise and then detonate it a third of the way through. There is loads of odd layering going on too (sometimes two pulses going at once, with 3 beats against 4). She manages to hold all this together and make it sound "normal", but actually, it really isn't.
If you like metal Poppy, this song fits the bill perfectly: 花冷え。「我甘党」 (Hanabie: We love sweets). Heavy riffs and a mishmash of styles in one song, all done with great skill.
Poopy just keeps shifting genres, but bringing along elements of each of her previous ones with her.
