Personally, I like how reality therapy is straightforward and practical. The client gets out of the session with a very specific plan. This video demonstrates the therapy well. I like how the counselor walks through the conflicts between need for power and belonging and set up plan with the client. Although, I would like to see how "humor" is used in this therapy.

The questions the counselor chooses to ask in this session based on reality therapy, really gets the client to think about her struggles with the need for power and belonging within her life. The questions seem very directive, but allowed the client to come to an understanding about her stance where she is having these issues. At one point in the role play confrontation is used when showing how the client points out negative and positive aspects within the need for power and belonging. Great example!

I liked the direct questions the counselor asked because it seemed that the client was a bit confused with how her own behaviors were influencing the consequences and contributing to her imbalance of needs. She also seemed unsure of how she would feel after decreasing some choices that define her power. The counselor helped to draw these insights out of the client and help her to realize new choices that she could make.

The counselor helped the client draw out behaviors and choices she is making that may be causing an imbalance in needs of power and belonging. The client also said that she was not having fun like she used to, so that could have been another area that the counselor could have approached further. The client was able to see how making adjustments to fulfilling her need for belonging by decreasing her level of power could be more appropriate and beneficial. She gained insight into her need for overall balance in her life and needs. The client could also increase her need for fun by not isolating herself from others.

I liked how the counselor helped her to see the difficulty in balancing out her specific needs due to her position. She understood that its a thin line on how far to go in seeking out friendships.

I especially liked when Dr. Grande said, "So, with these needs, there is a bit of a trade off, sometimes." And then proceeded with a question that invited the client to voice her thoughts about balancing her need for belonging and power so that it can be more rewarding for her without causing harm to others. I also liked how Dr. Grande did not try to control the client's plan for change; instead, he told her if she liked to try the new strategies this week that they could discuss how things went next week. This was a good example of letting the client maintain control. Overall, it was a descent role-play because it demonstrated how conflicting perceptions can impact the need for belonging and power.

Act outs like these are great but these scripts all have patients that are unrealistically agreeable and introspective. This isn't how sessions go and it's not helpful to clinicians for that reason.

So you expect the patient to fight and scream?
Or maybe a more subtle situation with flowers & tulips?
