  • The event of Karbala is a significant historical incident in Islamic history that took place on October 10, 680 CE (10th of Muharram, 61 AH). Here is a brief description:
After the death of Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) grandson, Husain ibn Ali, refused to pledge allegiance to the Umayyad caliph, Yazid ibn Muawiyah, he embarked on a journey to Kufa with his family and companions. However, they were intercepted by a large army sent by Yazid near Karbala (modern-day Iraq).
Despite being vastly outnumbered, Husain and his companions (around 72 men) refused to surrender, fighting bravely against the army of over 1,000 soldiers. The battle was brutal, and many of Husain's companions, including his brothers and sons, were martyred.
Husain himself was killed, beheaded, and his body was trampled by horses. The women and children, including Husain's sister Zaynab and daughter Sakina, were taken captive and marched to Kufa and later to Damascus.
This tragic event is considered a symbol of resistance against oppression, tyranny, and injustice. It has become a rallying cry for Shi'a Muslims and a powerful symbol of their faith and sacrifice. The annual commemoration of Ashura (the tenth day of Muharram) honors the martyrs of Karbala and serves as a reminder of the importance of standing up against injustice, even in the face of overwhelming odds.
