    Just to add on from a true Munhumutapa princess. Munhumutapa in Shona literally means "the person who takes by force" = conqueror , which became the title of the rulers . Zimbabwe derives its name from Great Zimbabwe, its original name being "Dzimba Dzemabwe" , literal translation is "great houses of stone" and not court like the explorer said . From me its a thumbs up , loved it and thank you for sharing our stories and heritage . "maita , tinotenda" ~thank you , we are great full from the Munhumutapa Empire , (it still Lives)

      @@bobbye.wright4424 Hi Bobby the term shona actually does not exists untill the end of the 18th century. It came from the Matebeles. The people used to be identified by dialects. The Mutapa Empire was based in the North and the rulers would be present day Korekore people. These are also called Tavara people. In Korekore language the Rulers were known ad Mwene weMutapa. Mwene in korekore means owner or Lord. Mutapa comes from kutapwa thus giving the title to the one who conquers. In general this would translate to Lord of the Conquerer

    This is great, as Africans we fail to tell our own stories in a manner that is sometimes respectful and honoring to ourselves and our history. For those who are asking about information on African history not sure about his sources but if you do have natives Africans in your communities that's a start, books are great but I discovered growing in Zimbabwe that some of our history books were Eurocentric they didn't cover the whole story mainly focusing on the 'savagery' of a people and tearing down what made their fabrics of society aka propaganda so if you travel museums and local excursions and people are also a good source and yea villages still exist in most parts of Africa and I'm sure there are custodians of societies who always have information passed on from generation to generation which you may not come across in books. Thanks again for video, I like this analogy 🙄

    The more I read the more I start to realize that the only reasons the Europeans enslaved us was not because they were stronger militarily but because we started fighting amongst ourselves.

    • @SpoilersAndAll

      +Joe Parrigen Agreed. Plus the gun, and medicine that helped them survive in the interior.

    • @HelloWorld1947
      @HelloWorld1947 9 лет назад +84

      +Joe Parrigen All cultures fight among themselves. There was no reason for Africans to be united just because they share the same continent. Just looked what the Vikings did to their fellow Scandinavians, look at what the British did to the Irish, looked at what East Europeans are doing to their own, rampant sex slavery (selling their own daughters for some cash) and the worse, look at WWI and WWII where Europeans slaughtered more than 100 million people of their own! And let's not even talk about the Asians countries where Mao wiped out 1/3 of his own people!! Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, China, Japan, Iraq, Iran, these people combined have murdered more people in Asian than any place on earth!
      Humans by nature are evil. If other cultures and societies couldn't live amongst each other what makes you think Africans who don't even speak the same languages, should have united as one? Hell, we don't even look like each other. There was no Pan-Africansim, just like there was no Pan-Europeansim, and no Pan-Asiansim. These are recent concepts, that should never be imposed on ancient people, who were well aware of their difference.

    • @joeparrigen4982
      @joeparrigen4982 9 лет назад +20

      Good points though I have to disagree with you on humans being naturally evil. Though I think some are due to being born psychotic I think the enviornment has to due with how a person turns out. And yes, you are right Europeans have been slaughtering each other for centuries but when it's time to unite they are all one. This is how they have been able to conquer Africa, and instill white supremacy. In the modern era if you are from Europe or you are on our side. Through that unfication they have been able to dominate the world. If people of African did the same when they started to take over Africa perhaps things would not have turned out the way they have.

    • @hometeamhistory806
      @hometeamhistory806  9 лет назад +49

      +Joe Parrigen I think the main difference between Europe and Asia or Africa is that 1: Europe is smaller so it was easier for one group of people to dominate (Romans) 2: Because of size the Romans virtually built the infrastructure of Northern Europe and instilled their ideological and cultural "baggage" unto Northern Europeans. Thus Northern Europeans became mobilized into "warring/conquering culture". In Asia and Africa this did not happen mostly because they are way more diverse and a lot bigger (harder to mobilize). Example, the Chinese largely stuck to themselves and the Mongols, though conquerors, were very tolerant of other religions and allowed self rule mostly. In Africa, Egyptians or Nubians largely fought each other and didn't even touch the rest of Africa militarily so as to instill the Nile Valley culture and worldview even though they very clearly had the capacity to do so.

    • @joeparrigen4982
      @joeparrigen4982 9 лет назад +11

      Very interesting I hadn't thought about Europe or Asia I wonder what would have happened if the Egyptians had a thirst for conquest such as the Romans what would Africa look like today?.

    I think there is truth to this. But I feel like Wakanda is more directly associated with Uganda and the Baganda people. Not only is the name a direct lift, in my opinion, but according to the Marvel website, Wakanda is between Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia and DRC. Which is Uganda. Also Uganda is named after the Baganda people which is similar to Wakanda and it's people who are the Wakandans. Named after the Baganda people. Uganda is a great country that is mineral and food rich. Landlocked and has a long heritage of great uniting leaders.
    Although, pick any African country and there are a million reasons it could be Wakanda. I am from Kenya btw. We can't wait for Black Panther here in my country. Great job with the vids.

Zimbabwe is the capital state of Africa, by destiny. This won't change. The Western system knows this secret that's why they have concentrated more on Zimbabwe more than other countries or States. But they also know that time will come when the Kingdom of Zimbabwe/Munhumutapa is restored. This is the true Kingdom of God. Africans are the true Israelites.

    There seems to be a connection between the Rozvi and Egypt. The main name of the Rozvi is Moyo, and their praise names are dewa and sai. Both praise names are egyptian words centered around divinity...and the rozvi mambos were worshiped as gods ....the final name the moyo's share is Gono, which reffers to a Bull. The egyptian name for a bull is spelt "Gn" as they never used vowels in their words...what do you think?

      That's really interesting I have always thought that Zimbabweans mutupo is something that they brought from Egypt as they were ways to signify who they were as we do in Zimbabwe today.

    • @chimedza
      @chimedza 7 лет назад +2

      You are very correct because we had a written language that wasn't spoken and when you go deep into your shona words you can find you can write without vowels. My great grandmother told me that the westerners came and made drawings of how they had built in stone and copied the standard and style. They down play the distruction of the Rozvi empire because even the rise of Shaka Zulu was out of the need to fight of the Dutch we the Rozvi people had been destroyed by internal power struggles and the Portuguese efforts who where then joined by the British. Millions were murdered in trying to resist to the point where Zimbabwe was colonised only for 99 years the fighting spirit of the people was taken out from them try as they did the settlers. The war is still on for total freedom economic and political.

    I would have added that in the Marvel Universe Wakanda is also portrayed as pretty isolationist and downright xenophobic. And that is not a recent element (or maybe it is now, since who knows when Marvel editors retcon continuity again), but was portrayed quite strongly in the story of the young Wakandan mutant Nezhno (aka "Gentle") whose own mother in fact didn't want him back and considered him nothing more than an Outsider due to his Russian father.In addition the panther god that they have is actually the Egyptian goddess Bast; two other Egyptian deities they have are Sekhmet and Sobek. No idea why.

The role of the griot is the official person in the African tribe who kept track of the history who taught the other African people in the tribe about their tradition and culture which is a very meaningful and special part of what defines the tried and make them Unique Individuals on the planet we share. From 1692 until 1694, Mwenemutapa Nyakambira rules Mutapa independently. Nyakambira was later killed in battle with the Portuguese who then placed Nyamaende Mhande on the throne as their puppet.Upon his death in 1740, the young Dehwe Mapunzagutu took power. He sought Portuguese support and invited them back to Mutapa along with their garrison of armed men, but Mutapa remained independent.The "winners" ended up governing an even more reduced land from Chidima. They used the title Mambo a Chidima and ruled independently of Portugal until 1917 when Mambo Chioko, the last king of the dynasty, was killed in battle against the Portuguese.The belief that the mines were inside the Mwenemutapa kingdom in southern Africa was one of the factors that led to the Portuguese exploration of the hinterland of Sofala in the 16th century, and this contributed to early development of Mozambique, as the legend was widely used among the less educated populace to recruit colonists.
    All of this was hastened by Portugal retaining a presence on the coast and in the capital.In 1629 the mwenemutapa attempted to throw out the Portuguese. He failed and was overthrown, leading to the Portuguese installation of Mavura Mhande Felipe on the throne.Mutapa signed treaties making it a Portuguese vassal and ceding gold mines.All the while, Portugal increased control over much of southeast Africa with the beginnings of a colonial system.It appears neither the Rozwi nor the Portuguese could maintain control of the Mutapa state for very long, and it moved back and forth between the two throughout the 17th century. Far from a victim of conquest, the Mutapa rulers actually invited in foreign powers to bolster their rule. This included vassalage to Portuguese East Africa from 1629 to 1663 and vassalage to the Rozwi Empire from 1663 until the Portuguese return in 1694. To this day countries such as Angola And Mozambique Still use Portuguese as their officual language.

    Makanda kikongo word dealing with race/ community (wakanda) depending on content you use the word in.
    Wa/ma is prefix . So wakanda isn't place but a people or community .
    Wa-kanda deformation of word makanda or makandala (makandala =instructor of spiritual priest, spiritual sciencist and spiritual politicians) makandala is title of bukongo spiritual tradition way life of bakongo people .
    Also today you have spiritual leader of bundu dia kongo who is ne muanda nsemi holds the title of makandala who is also divine king also know as nkua tulendo.
    So black panther = wakanda is about race and messenger of black race and divine king .
    Also black kingdom of kongo dia ntotela

    Very cool vid! You were ahead of all the hype and very perceptive. Stan Lee wrote Black Panther in 60s and that was at a time when globally Rhodesia/Zimbabwe was center stage for the Organization of African Unity and more. I hope you will research Zim more because Zimbabwe's history the Mutapa and Rozvi go further than the 15th century. Zim goes back over 3000 years. The Mwenemutapa (plural of Mhunu Mutapa) were the sons of King Solomon who controlled the military and the gold mines. That's why the Europeans called "Monomotapa" the Eldorado of the ancient world. Eldorado the legendary city of gold. The "Monomotapa" Empire was reputed to have the best gold in the world...that's what got the British to invade in 1891. The Mwenemutapa kings not only controlled the gold in the South but also the gold of Nubia/Egypt. The British archaeologists who looted Great Zimbabwe did an inventory and they found a cartouche of King Tutmoses 3 of Egypts 18th Dynasty. Also it was King Pepi Meryre (Hebrew Merari, modern day Shona Mawire) who was one of the first rulers to invest in the mines of the gold. The best non European sources are Arabic, Ethiopic and Indian writings on the Empire that show its ancient roots. Most of the British writers attributed the archaeology to the Ethiopian kingdom of Axum and Himyarite Empire of Yemen. That's where most people and the Brits didn't correct it that the Asian people in Yemen today were there thousands of years ago. Yemen was ruled by Ethiopia for much of its history and was home to many ancient black civilizations including the ancestors of the Shona. What's interesting is that most Zimbabweans don't even know the Ethiopian kings from the Solomonic kings of Ethiopia who had the title of Mhunu Mutapa. The destruction of the Mwenemutapa Kings was actually due to the Islamic wars in East Africa. "Monomotapa" had the largest standing military in Africa...and backed up Ethiopia in the East. When Ethiopia in the East was being attacked, military was mobilized to fight and it left Great Zim vulnerable. Ethiopian Negus/Emperor Fasiladas is actually the Mhunu Mutapa king that the French painted quite alot. One of the last....really the last strong military king. Then Negus/Emperor Yohanes and the lastly Negus Iyasu. Emperor Fasiladas built Ethiopias long time capital Gondar as a modern update of Great Zimbabwe. Also don't forget that the Portuguese many of them had roots in East Africa and the Middle East. They were ruled by the Moors...and the Moors came from East Africa and Middle East and a substantial population settled in Spain and Portugal. Thanks for a great vid!

    Your videos are always so informative, and I'm so happy you're talking about my country! I must disagree on the Cowhorn formation bit because Mzilikazi's (Zulu military commander) small Khumalo clan was able to take over much of Southern Zimbabwe. If the Shona used those strategies first, why were so many of them easily taken over by the Zulu (now known as the Ndebele tribe in Zimbabwe)?

    • @tofaramoyo2955
      @tofaramoyo2955 8 лет назад +6

      The cow horn formation was first developed by the Rozvi as has been written about in Portuguese records. It may sound odd but in a way even Shaka paid tribute to the Rozvi, or at least a Rozvi faction. The Lobedu. Tshaka used to come there to pay tribute for help in determining seasons from the rain queen Modjadgi. The Lobedu call themselves Lotswi (rozvi) and their praise names are Dewa and Sai, just like the Rozvi and they also call themselves the people of thovela while the Rozvi call themselves the people of thobera.
