  • These might even be the "best" Airline Cardless cards yet...the Avianca Cards have reasonable welcome offers and automatic Status; and the Elite card offers a nice bounty of benefits and "free" points. Let's talk about them.

    Only correction is that Red Plus is not equivalent to just basic member status. So you don't get it immediately upon signing up to lifemiles. You do have to earn it. Its benefits are negligible, but just thought I'd put that out in case people think that everyone who signs up for lifemiles automatically gets some form of elite status. Avianca makes you earn miles by flying on its own metal before giving out any status. As a Colombian living in NYC (so I fly Avianca at least once a year), the elite card offers an intriguing proposition. Worth some more consideration before I pull the trigger. Good breakdown

      Thank you for the heads up! I wasn’t aware. I’m contemplating getting an account with Avianca and using it as a way to jump start status with other Star alliance airlines, but still undecided on these cards.

      @@MattClausen I've had great success with lifemiles redemptions in the past, which has made lifemiles my preferred loyalty program (as far as airlines go). But they're still such niche cards that I find it difficult to believe that they'll last long in the American market. But only time will tell. I barely missed qualifying for silver status on my own last year, so as an Avianca flyer it's nice to know that I can get some additional lounge visits when I go to Colombia. Red Plus only grants you one visit a year

      I *think* the Elite card *might* be a strong play. I don’t know if the LifeMiles+ Basic is an incredible value. Then again I haven’t been hit with Avianca Change/Cancel fees

    No fees if changes or cancellations - Does not apply to members with lite plan
    Silver status on the website....
    Additional checked bags in economy fares - Does not apply for basic and light fares
    Only works with classic and flex but you already pay for a checked bag
    So 2 checked bags 1 paid 1 free
    Economy seat selection - Does not apply for basic and light fares

    • @MattClausen
      @MattClausen  5 месяцев назад

      Yeah. Change and Cancel fee avoidance is Lifemiles+ Basic, which will run $360 a year. But one cancellation on a flight for 3 and you’re more than covered. That part is decent.
      Didn’t look too deep into the fare classes. But those sound less Ideal.
      Then again if I got one of these cards I would t necessarily be flying Avianca Metal…

    • @WhatsThePoints1
      @WhatsThePoints1 5 месяцев назад

      @@MattClausenso if you have this card and buy an elevated fare no change fees? Problem with partner awards is they’re only one class, elevated economy only available for avianca metal. So I wonder if this benefit still applies because I definitely try to be sure of my plans when booking thru them which I do about twice a year at least

    • @WhatsThePoints1
      @WhatsThePoints1 5 месяцев назад

      Also status matching doesn’t work within an alliance right? Star silver would give a lower level of benefits on United than actual United silver I’d think

  • @basaindon
    @basaindon 5 месяцев назад +2

    The cards are niche, but the Elite card is interesting with a Basic or Pro plan. In the T&C, the travel category is really, really broad. So, the card would basically be 4x restaurant and all travel (including rival airlines like Delta) for the first $1000 or $2250 each month. The math makes it competitive, but the need to hit that target every month without over or undershooting the spend makes breakage pretty high likelihood. The math gets really wonky, but it becomes like buying a whole lot of Lifemiles at 1.23 to 1.45cpp when you consider the difference in earning/AF vs an Autograph or an Amex Green.

    • @MattClausen
      @MattClausen  5 месяцев назад

      I hadn’t gone that far with the math. Though you have to hit a TON of spend to offset Pro…but if you can, yeah…could work well.

    • @basaindon
      @basaindon 5 месяцев назад

      @@MattClausen yeah, the card is really good for someone fully in the Lifemiles ecosystem and that travels a ton. I mean, I've been thinking about this more and more with the Flying Blue card, which gets 3x on all SkyTeam (including Delta) -- you can make a case that American road warriors that understand the value of miles should just switch to international programs. Why not credit all your United flights to Avianca and go all in on Lifemiles on the company dime? But I don't think these cards make sense for the CC maximizers. You can get 4x Lifemiles with the Amex Gold.

    • @MattClausen
      @MattClausen  4 месяца назад +1

      The double points is up to the spend, but that’s dictated by your LifeMiles+ subscription. The Lite is “free” with the card.

      @@MattClausen Got it, makes sense. Thanks. I was just wondering because I've seen other cards placing a fine print for this type of benefits of up to 12 months, after that you won't earn the benefits anymore.

  • @WhatsThePoints1
    @WhatsThePoints1 2 месяца назад +1

    Crunching some numbers I estimate you can break even each year if you redeem at least 100-125k lifemiles. Definitely doable but a bit of an obligation. And only the more expensive second tier of the lifemiles+ subscription includes free cancellation

    I’m interested… but do you think that this new card launch puts pressure on the transferable partners? Do you think this is a sign perhaps no more transfer points multipliers for lifemiles

    • @MattClausen
      @MattClausen  5 месяцев назад

      I mean it could but Citi and Wells just announced new cards with decent earnings for LifeMiles, it may get them to do more with their top cards. I think Avianca is also AmEx or Capital One. There’s no changing the Venture X. I dunno about the Plat.
