    I love the bike wish I had more time to ride it, it's awesome to have electric start and kick start as well, I paid 2200 for mine 2 years ago- so far it's been a great bike!

      AutoTech, think I may have overpaid for mine. Just bought 1 off ebay for 3300... picking up Sunday in Chicago, only positive is the current owner is 58... so much more responsible than a young buck.
      Why 2 oil filter and how many screens on the 400 exc/r?
      Enjoyed this video... lots to learn

    my brother is a ktm tech and swears by the lay the bike down to fill the oil filter cavity because it shoots directly to the bearings. I have a 2005 400exc and do so every change.. But it seems your doing fine without this step . Nice video!! ride on

    Nice tutorial :) Just bought one myself..
    Tip, instead of manhandling the alublock, use magnet to remove the filter.. You can buy a stack of needy magnet on eBay, they are really strong, and very cheap.. I have a telescope picker, with a magnet glued to it.. works perfect for dropped screws etc ;)

      +Emil Fløche Thanks for watching! I think i will use a magnet next time:)

    To remove these type of oil filters I use needle nose pliers and spread the tips into the filter to grab it from the recessed area of the filter.

    Great video. I might be too anal, but I use magnets to pull the filters out and put a thin coat of oil on the filter seals before I install. I also run the bike for 3 minutes prior to oil change. I torque the rear (magnet bolt) 13 mm bolt at 20 Nm, mid 8 mm hex at 10 Nm, side filter plates with 8 mm w/ socket extension which doesn't require me to pull the chain guard off. I lay the bike on the side and fill 1200 cc of oil. Put the bike up right and run bike for 2 minutes and shut bike off. Add about 50 cc and check oil fill window.

    Maybe a video on changing out various bearings. I'm working on changing the counter shaft bearing right now and it's fighting me pretty hard. I've drilled one hole and put a screw in to try and pull it out but I just rip the screw out each time.

      @@Teachingcasuals i did eventually get it piece by piece. a heat gun really is the way to go with that counter shaft seal.

    I have one of these bikes why does this have two exhaust pipes mine only has one single pipe the bottom drain plug is it still Lefty Lucy righty tighty ? Cuz mine is very tight and I'm not sure

  • @AutoTechMadsen
    @AutoTechMadsen  11 лет назад +1

    I don't believe it is necessary to lay the bike over every time you change the oil. However if I just rebuilt the engine and was starting it for the first time I would lay it down. But first I would fill the crankcase then the filter housings. That way I would be able to pick the bike up and start it right away before the oil in filter housings had a chance to down in to the crankcase.
    Hopefully I answered your questions, if you have any more ideas for videos please let me know.

    Seems like a dumb question but I just did a full filter oil change . Just got the bike , is 1.5 litters going to cause an issue. Cold in the sight glass it shows right at half. Thanks for the help

    thanks for the Vid! I can't figure out why only the short filter comes with a new o-ring. Do you alternate replacing the o-ring, first change the short one, next change the long one?

    • @AutoTechMadsen
      @AutoTechMadsen  10 лет назад +1

      I'm not sure either, I like your plan we just need to make sure they are the same size. However I would always make sure to inspect both o-rings and replace the one that has the most damage.

    i have a 450 exc 2007, do you know if the oil filters are the same on my model??

  • @dereks1357
    @dereks1357 11 лет назад +3

    I have a 2000 KTM 400 EXC and in my KTM manual it says when replacing the two main filters, you should lay the bike on it's side (once emptied and filters out) and fill the the filter housings about halfway with oil. Then put the new filters in and finish everything else exactly as you showed.
    Is it necessary to do this step? Or do you just skip it to save time because it's not extremely important?

    So is the engine oil and gear oil the same when you change and fill? New to the bike. It’s a 450exc. I’m leaking oil from the bottom bolt that i assume is the same as the one taken out in the video. Obvious where to fill engine oil. My question again does that also serve as the gear oil? I am going to pull the bottom screw with the screen to see if there is anything making it leak. Just want to know that when i fill it that it will or will not take care of the gears. Thanks everyone!!!
