  • As part of my material about the Gaithers, Wes Hampton and David Phelps have a very significant role as they are considered among the most important tenors in the Gospel Music and the longer-term tenors in the Gaither Vocal Band. Enjoy as I analyze some aspects of their voices.

Very interesting, always enjoy your perspective. David and Wes are both fantastic tenors in their own way but of course David is and always will be my favorite. Thank you for your comments 😊

I love both these singers. People overlook how good Wes is because they insist on comparing him to David. Wes can move you to tears in ways that David can't.

Obviously, they are two different voices, David, for me is the best, period, the best singer I ever heard. But I really admire and enjoy Wes Hampton so much, he's a phenomenal singer. I remember in 2005 when it began to be said that David was leaving and finally Wes was announced as his replacement, I lived in Cuba, it was not like now that you can go on the internet and look for something on RUclips about this new person and get an idea of the artist. I had to wait several months, and I will never forget the first time I put the "Give It Away" album that a good friend lent me on my little cd player... just the harmonization on the introduction of "Bread Upon The Water" sold the album to me. Wes was a tremendous addition to the Vocal Band, it really wasn't easy coming to replace David, and Wes did it wonderfully, because as Gaither says "you don't replace anybody, you just do something different". Immediately Wes was demonstrating his skills and vocal abilities and, in my opinion, he was also improving over time and adapting to his role in the group, he strengthened vocally over the years, He Himself said that he was training focused on this purpose. The final prof that he's a fantastic singer, it's that no one can sing for so many years in that range if they don't have the proper vocal technique. I really remember those years of Wes, Guy, and Marshall as fantastic, great times, I feel a little bit nostalgic when I listen to does albums today (Give it away, Loving Life...)

I have enjoyed David for years, hearing him at numerous concert and even meeting him at one of them. However , I have followed Wes’s career since he joined the GVB, and he has developed a very powerful voice that really blends with the GVB. Some songs demand the reverence of Wes’s voice while other numbers require the show stopping voice of David. Personally I love them both!!!

That’s true and that’s bc God gave him different vocal chords and he had the training at Baylor to use them. I wonder if Wes learned from David some of those Baylor techniques since he didn’t major in music, and doesn’t have those special vocal chords, just his tenor chords. I love them both, but David with special chords, definitely has a unique sound. Perhaps if regular chords he would sound like Wes!?

@@peggyallen3948 Wes has commented that he learned a lot from David and watching David when they were in the GVB together.
