I was a junior player for Leeds RLFC, and briefly played for Mr. Francis between 68 and 70.
Made five appearance s against minor tears, like Doncaster , Hunslet, Batley, Dewsbury and York.
To be honest, I was crap, but I was at print college with John Holmes, and introduced him to Mr. Francis who gave him three trial game, again against Bramley, Hunslet and Doncaster.
He was at 17, obviously very talented and was offered a contact.
He went on to play 623 games for the club plus 24 International caps.
My first wife and I were at his wedding, as he was at mine.
A thoroughly nice guy who went on to play 629 games, a world record and I think 25 England caps, again a record which I don't think will ever be beaten.
Sadly he died far too young and I miss him to this day.

Basically all that has changed is the quality of the playing surface, hence the faster, and more entertaining game of today.

Players carry about 25kg more lean mass, and are q far faster, stronger and fitter. It’d be carnage if the semi pro scrawny players from 1972 went up against their 2023 counterparts
