This is a very concise and clear explanation of adjustment and settings. I can now measure and set up my bike for my 82kg mass + clothing + Givi Trekker topbox and contents. Thank you for the excellent video! 👍
What mysterious brew is in that cup? Thank you for this interesting video from Spain. We left for morocco with our Vstorm, and I wanted to know the exact functioning of the suspension.
Hi doc, thank you so much for this video. I got this exact model last year and was wondering how this whole process was done. I just have some additional questions: 1 - How do you know where the tape should be put on? Is it always that same location for this model? If so, can't you simply perform the measurement without the X and tape? 2 - I still have all the factory suspension settings and it feels like the bike rides quite stiff when on roads with parallels. Is this normal, even if the damping force is with the correct amount of turns? Gracias y saludo de Portugal.
1. Take can be more or less perpendicular to the axle 2. Just work the suspension a bit if it is a bit stuck and play with the softness from the screw on the bottom
Excellent!!! You explained the concept so clearly and simply, demonstration was easy to follow. Most videos go very technical without really showing how it can be done by normal people. Great. And many thanks. P. S. - Can you pls explain the Damping concept/principle.

Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong...if your spring is bottoming out, more preload will not do anything to prevent that. Preload is only for correcting sag - that's all it can do. It cannot make the spring stronger. Also, I believe the 3rd gen vstrom 650 only has rebound adjustment - this adjustment can only change the speed at which the rear suspension returns to sag after hitting a bump. If the rear pogos (bounces down and up several times) after hitting a bump, increase rebound till it just returns to sag after hitting that bump (doesn't continue bouncing up and down for that one bump). I believe that you're trying to say that the adjustment on your bike is for both rebound and compression damping - I don't believe that is correct. They are typically two different adjustment methods. "REAR SUSPENSION - Link type, rear shock with adjustable rebound damping and spring preload" copied from suzuki's current v-strom 650 specs. This bike doesn't have an adjustment for compression damping. I apologise if I have misunderstood your video.
Messured my sag with me, passenger and the bags, its 110mm, what do you think is it safe? Planning a long trip across the country, can suspension handle it? Rolled it to max preload btw
@@DrVstrom 1st. measurement without load on center stand - 500mm. 2nd. measurement with me passenger and bags 390mm. I want to mention that I exceed GVWR by ~25 kg.
Its funny because today I had a friend asking me the same question of exceeding weight limits for a car. Anyways, please note the following. The limits are there for a reason. Even if you drive slowly and safely lets say, control will not be good especially on turns with bumps and I dont think your rear suspension will end up well after this trip. If you have the 650, its suspension is limited and there are after market solutions for this. Hope that offers more info.
@@DrVstromIts 650 , 2020, got 4000km on it, so its kinda new. Did the test ride with some bumps, suspension seems to take it well and the handling wast that bad at all. I hope everything will be ok.
If you refer to the ohe turned by hand then mine was on the default position but it should not matter as after you take the measurements you adjust accordingly.
Better get a more enhanced suspension. After so many years its time to replace. So why not with a stronger solution. If you also load the bike with luggage and guards not to mention passenger its a one way decision. The 650 has a basic suspension to keep the cost down and its better to upgrade.
@@DrVstrom I just ordered a yss shock. I was looking at replacing just the spring as the service manual says replace the spring if feels too soft. However it also says the rear shock is not serviceable and I can’t find a replacement spring for sale new.
Thanks a lot, This is a very complicated method, how do I balance the rear wheel spring of the bike (there is no indicator) sometimes I may ride with a passenger or with equipment (is there a certain easy way) for V-Strom
What do you mean there is no indicator? The method is the same for all motorcycles. What are you asking exactly? If you mean to find a setting for all, as long as you are not going on a long trip fully loaded with side luggage, its fine.
@@DrVstrom Thanks 😊 I own a Suzuki V-Strom 1050 XT, on my short trips I may ride with a passenger or sometimes with the boxes, according to the bike manuals the rear spring has 12 points to adjust the load but there is no indicator show like the GS from BMW
Hello, I normally do not give such detailed info for non membership members but here you go. To adjust follow the same process exactly as my video. For measurement 1, its bike unloaded & measurement 2 is loaded with your passenger. You do M1-M2 and the result number you need to compare with 30% of your rear suspension travel, which I think for the 1050 is 30% of 160mm so 48mm. if your number (M1-M2) is >48 you turn slowly clockwise. if it is
Sorry, have not given that much though, I tend to listen to the engine not look at the rev meter so much. What are you trying to achieve? It will definitely depend on how well you chain is adjusted and the road it self plus conditions.
@@DrVstrom not stress engine to Máximize engine life. I usually travel at 6500 on highway for long periods of time probably 2hrs. I wonder if 7500 is ok or probably engine is stressed
Hello, The engine is bulletproof so no problems there. However there are other potential issues if you intend to cruise at these revs for 2 hours straight that you might need to consider. Namely the risk of getting tickets for speeding, the excessive tire wear & fuel consumption. I will not lie, I ve done it myself even revving higher for such periods of time and no issue there. In fact the oil and engine gets proper temperature and you can then tell that the engine works better, the gears shift smoother, etc. However do consider the other factors as well. A last thing to remember is that if your tires get hot and you stop suddenly its also not good for tires but you need to gradually bring the temp down and then stop. Hope this helped & Ride safe.
Boa tarde.
For the 530 that you say was the same with the suspension loose and on side stand, some time it sticks so do not worry. Just make sure when you have it on the center stand to pull the wheel down so it fully extends and it unsticks. So ok from 530 you subtract whatever number is measure by a 3rd person when you and your wife are both on the bike without your feet touching the ground. Then that number you bring as close to 48 as possible by turning the adjuster accordingly. That means that after you turn the adjuster, you and your wife repeat and a 3rd person measures again and then you subtract the new number again. If the difference is closer to 48 your are adjusting to the correct direction until you reach 48.
What I did not understand: Do I adjust the preload before taking measurements to the factory setup (2 lines visible) or do i fully turn the button clockwise to 5 lines visible an then start measuring? ...or neither? or did i commit a fallcy?
Forget the 2 lines for preload. Follow the video. Do the 2 measurements and then the calculations and adjust appropriately for your weight and purposes.
I'm 80 but it's not a matter of rings and my weight. It also depends on your gear and any other weight on the motorcycle. Follow the video for best results.
I have one question pls. I have the same bike. Year 2020. When i set my preload to max the sag is more then 60cm. Now, i have 120kg, and the motorcycle luggage cariers, protectors, and top case with everything in it have probebly 20-30kg more for sure. Is it posible that the rear sunspension is too weak for my weight? 😏🤔
He already said that he put preload to max. That means the weight is probably way too much for the shock to be adjusted properly. Stop confusing people or please do that in your own channel.
Hi from Cape Town. My static sag measured at 510mm, with a pillion on the beast measurement I could get was 450mm = 60mm of travel. Preload was turned up all the way hard. So does this mean I need a heavier preload spring?
Well I say that in the video towards the end. If the measurements are correct and the adjustments also but the numbers are off, it means that if there is a big difference it might be tge case. If there is not a big diff its ok.

I have manual in English and my language and I can't find 30%from 160...only that come with fix suspension factory 2 level..so you can adjust from 0-5 level..your video is great ,maybe little to long, and I lose info from Frist to second measurement..
Welcome to the world of dealers who want you to go and pay. The 30 % is commonly known in the motorcycle community. Just adjust in this way and you will see how good it will behave. The video has split labeled parts and you can jump from 1 to the next depending on what you are looking. What info do you miss between the 2 measurements? Its simple. Measure on center stand for measurement 1, Measure while you alone or you plus luggage or you plus 2nd passenger, depending on for what weight you want to adjust. That is measurement 2 M1-M2 = result Is the result equal to 30%of 160? If it is great. If not you adjust to make result as close to 30%of 160 as possible. Watch the video more carefully. Hope it helped.
thank you for your quick reply, now I would like you to record how the engine speed indicator is set to zero, I tried according to the manual but I didn't succeed. I figured out everything else because I've only had the motorcycle for two weeks... the motorcycle is 1 year old and they were taken out immediately front and rear springs and high tech purple coil put on I think....I don't know if it affects the rug...thanks for your time...👍
Eric, I have made a statement. I will add subtitles soon. Google auto generated subtitles do not work so I have to add them manually! And as you understand I need to type by hand and it takes some time. Next days they will be available
For goodness sake people. Can someone please tell me what setting should I use for an 80kg, me + a few bits, load? This is way too long and agonizing for me, sorry 😬
If you do it the way doctor describes and note down your settings for one passenger, for two passengers and for two passenger with laguage you will be able to set the bike without doing the whole prosedure every time. There is no easier way than described here.
Well if you dont like it dont watch it. I did not force you to. Nor I m gonna change my style for you especially when most of my viewers like it this way.
Good day to you sir. Thank you for this. But unfortunately this entire video is super confusing. I am not a troll and I am not here to create trouble or to discourage you. I am just being honest that this video confused more than it clarified. Way too much theory. I request that you do another one just demonstrating the concept quickly. You started talking about preload and then that word completely disappeared.
Good day to you my friend. This is not a channel where in 5 min you watch & go. If I did this video in less time there would be many saying the opposite of what you expressed (ie that it was too brief and info is missing). To this day this video is one of my most engaging and successful ones in terms of views and time viewed. You simply skip the theory if you dont want it and jump to these parts for preload. 6:58 1st Measurement Ext Sag 7:08 Measurements-2 Point The Setup 9:05 2nd Measurement Race Sag 14:16 The Calculations 15:20 Adjusting by Increasing Preload 16:32 Repeat the Measurement & Adjust Then if you wanna play also with the damping force you continue to 17:30 Damping Force Adjustment 18:52 Damping Force Adjuster & Indications 20:24 Set Damping Force Adjuster to Default Its that simple. Good evening. I would like to know the ideal setting for my mono, considering a total of 200 kilos, which includes me and the passenger. Thank you
Hello, you would have to follow the video process and make fine adjustments. Hope that helps.

I'm 80 but it's not a matter of rings and my weight. It also depends on your gear and any other weight on the motorcycle. Follow the video for best results.
Is it the same for front preload and damping too? Mine is 18 DL 1000.
Thanks.
Travelling, I will answer you soon
contact me on FB and I will help you
I have one question pls.
Probably yes and probably you need a more enhanced shock. They do sell some that can handle more weight.
No because max weight for this motorcycle is 210kg,
He already said that he put preload to max. That means the weight is probably way too much for the shock to be adjusted properly. Stop confusing people or please do that in your own channel.
Thanks for the great guidance!
Thank you :)
Hi from Cape Town. My static sag measured at 510mm, with a pillion on the beast measurement I could get was 450mm = 60mm of travel. Preload was turned up
all the way hard. So does this mean I need a heavier preload spring?
Well I say that in the video towards the end. If the measurements are correct and the adjustments also but the numbers are off, it means that if there is a big difference it might be tge case. If there is not a big diff its ok.
Top seu video abraço de Brasil
Obrigado :)
Likeeeeee from Brazil 👍 🇧🇷

Glad you enjoyed
thank you!

Hola amigo podrias activar los subtitulos?gracias
I will add subtitles the following days

Great topic!
Thank you :)
Excelent. Very well detailed.
I want more information
Well if you do, shoot. Ask your question so the others can benefit.
@@DrVstrom I am 171 cm tall and I feel the bike is very high, just bought it
There is a lower seat and a lowering kit you can buy that are shorter links on the suspension

Ομως οι μηχανες αυτες ειναι on off και οχι sport bikes.
Its simple.
Measure on center stand for measurement 1,
Measure while you alone or you plus luggage or you plus 2nd passenger, depending on for what weight you want to adjust. That is measurement 2
M1-M2 = result
Is the result equal to 30%of 160?
If it is great.
If not you adjust to make result as close to 30%of 160 as possible.
Watch the video more carefully.
Hope it helped.
thank you for your quick reply, now I would like you to record how the engine speed indicator is set to zero, I tried according to the manual but I didn't succeed. I figured out everything else because I've only had the motorcycle for two weeks... the motorcycle is 1 year old and they were taken out immediately front and rear springs and high tech purple coil put on I think....I don't know if it affects the rug...thanks for your time...👍

I did not get that. What year model you have and what exactly are you trying to achieve?

Hello I will put subtitles the following days. Google does not do that automatically so give me some time
👏👏👏
🇧🇷😉👍
Thanks
For goodness sake people. Can someone please tell me what setting should I use for an 80kg, me + a few bits, load? This is way too long and agonizing for me, sorry 😬
If you do it the way doctor describes and note down your settings for one passenger, for two passengers and for two passenger with laguage you will be able to set the bike without doing the whole prosedure every time. There is no easier way than described here.
Hello Dr V-strom which is your website?
6:58 1st Measurement Ext Sag
7:08 Measurements-2 Point The Setup
9:05 2nd Measurement Race Sag
14:16 The Calculations
15:20 Adjusting by Increasing Preload
16:32 Repeat the Measurement & Adjust
Then if you wanna play also with the damping force you continue to
17:30 Damping Force Adjustment
18:52 Damping Force Adjuster & Indications
20:24 Set Damping Force Adjuster to Default
Its that simple.
If you still have questions on a particular point, ask them on the comments and I will reply.

@@DrVstrom thank you. Will watch it again following your guidelines.
Good info but far too dragged out.
Noted!
This guy talks so slow. Watch on 1.5X speed.
Better try and find another guy then, but then again, no one cares to make such videos for free.
@DrVstrom I watched the video, I just sped it up..!
You talk way to fricken much bro. There's no need for all that.
Funny but I would say the same for your comment. You either say thanks, or make a video of your own and move on to another channel
