  • When a word ends with a vowel followed by a consonant and then a silent "e," the last letter "e" doesn't make a sound.
    This last letter "e" is called a silent e or magic e.
    In these cases, the vowels before the consonants are long vowels:
    Long "a" makes the sound [ei]
    Long "i" makes the sound [ai]
    Long "o" makes the sound [ou]
    Long "u" makes the sound [u:]
