- Nick Broomfield's interview by Louis Theroux with Film Clips at Sheffield Doc Fest in June 2017.
In a career spanning more than four decades, Nick Broomfield is one of the most influential documentary makers of our time. Having initially carved his name in hard hitting observational fare, when ‘Driving me Crazy’ went awry in 1988 Nick decided to place himself in the story, going on to make a number of acclaimed films including Biggie and Tupac, Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of A Serial Killer and Kurt & Courtney. Nick returned to Doc/Fest in 2017 with his latest film, Whitney ‘Can I Be Me’.
In the 2017 BBC Interview, Louis Theroux, himself no stranger to being centre of the action, talked to Nick about his career and latest film.
Wow, it's a trip to hear both of their voices have a conversation with one another after hearing them for so long in documentaries. It's like Batman and Superman having a conversation for the first time.
Well not in the slightest....but yeah
I am absolutely obsessed with Nick Broomfield
My two favourite documentary filmmakers.
I love there style....
You took the words out of my mouth.
Never heard of Adam Curtis huh?
Me too
@@jimmypockets2337 and John Pilger, all greats!
Nick Broomfield is legendary
Nick Broomfield is a legend. If you like Louis Theroux's docs then you should definitely check out Nick's. He's excellent!
Love both Nick Broomfield and Louis Theroux's work, love the style of these documentaries, im not a huge fan of sit down interview documentaries that are interjected with footage and photo's....but some are worth watching they do tend to be very formulaic though. What are some of your favourites?
@@wolfman5181 Great it's good to see that he still has fans. I wish Broomfield was more active; I'm looking forward to his latest project being released. I'm a big fan of all his work so it's hard to pick a favorite. The Leader, his Driver, and his Driver's Wife was always one of my best, plus it's sequel. Possibly my favorite moment in his documentaries is in Kurt and Courtney when Nick highjacks the stage at an ACLU event in protest of the fact that Courtney Love was speaking for them. Once I saw that I was his biggest fan. Have you any favorites?
@@wolfman5181 The two Brookfield did on Eugene Terrblanche and the AWB and the one Louis did on white separatists in South Africa could almost work as a trilogy. Great documentary makers.
These two are total heroes. Nick is a legend. His films are compulsive.
2 amazing documentary film makers and journalists
Hey louis! I feel comfortamble with you documents we know many years
Omg a collaboration with these two would be amazing 🤩
Don't really see how that would work, they play the same part in their respective works. They write their documentaries and paint the picture from their personal perspectives of how the story unfolds.
Just a quick note... Nick Broomfield was 69 years old when this was filmed.
DAMN, he’s FINE for Sixty-Nine!
I really wish nick would do a final follow up of juvenile liason. I'd absolutely love to see what happened to all of them since 1990
Aileen never should have been put to death, she clearly was not fit mentally.
Interesting discussion surrounding all capital punishment really, because is any serial killer of sound mind?
Really fascinating, thanks for the upload.
Very interesting conversation with two great minds. Appreciate the work from both of you
two of my favorite trauma merchants.
Nick Bloomfield thank you for the great work that you are done thank you so much
Broom.
Eugene Terreblanche's favourite pair!
Good to know that even someone like Nick, struggled to make a film work. Maybe there's hope for all of us.
Louis should interview Adam Curtis - The Power of Nightmares
Michael Moore - Bowling for Columbine
Asif Kapadia - Maradona Senna Amy
And ANYTHING by DAVID ATTENBOROUGH
John Pilger also makes beautiful documentaries.
Like what?
@@mrtambourineman6107 John Pilger has made documentaries that changed the world. The man is a giant.
My favorite was Eileen Wornous... he nailed that film
Idk if you know this or not but he did 2. One in the early 90s and then again 1o years later
My 2 Favourite Documentarians in 1 video ,Fantastic
That was a wonderful way to whittle away an hour over a leisurely Sunday breakfast on my own .....
Whitney is a great documentary
The passive aggressive dig at his cameraman was great
"Dreaming of some tropical paradise"
What a cool duo
Tales of the Grim Sleeper is my favourite Nick Broomfield doc.
There are so many!
What a treat
From AZ🌵
wish louis had asked about kurt & courtny
Oh yes ! Yes! I loved that little movie, very honest but still a load of shit! Ha loved it ❤🏝
R.i.p eileen carol wournos
N.B. absolutely knows how to put a doc together with intelligent questions that pulls out essential info that makes the film important evidence for those like Eileen Wuornos who became a victim of crooked Florida law enforcement.
You can feel her pain by just seeing her. Very tragic.
Nick Broomfield >>>>> Biggie vs 2pac documentary
A wide range of accents in the audience lol
That girl in the back stands very still
Thas racist
for half a second i didnt realise she was signing in the back and i thought she was taking the piss out of him xD
Bahahahahahah! 😂
I want to interview Louis
Ask him why he's friends with padeo's...
The Ants are My friends like who?
Who doesn't?
Nick, how do you stay so youthfull??
I was just about to write 'he looks well but youthful is a bit of a stretch' but then looked up his age....FUCKING HELL THE GUY TURNS 70 NEXT JANUARY..WHAT THE FUCK??
TrainInVain what????? I thought he was like 57
@d aaa Nick doesn't do foreplay, he'd ask 'Why are we here, so we can screw?'
Money.
@@sratus wow he's looks younger
I hope that Sergeant had brushed his teeth well that day! (Hope he hadn't just had mackerel fish paste and garlic baguette!
I would have wanted to know if he thought about his target audience, when making a film. I would love to make a couple of documentaries, to correct some bad documentary histories, but I'm sure there are loads of things I haven't yet realised, about the story telling process, & how to get it right. Pace, or rhythm, is a massive mystery to me!
Soulmate ? Define that?
Soulmate is someone you can open yourself too devote to
Soulmate is someone you can open up and devote to
19th of May 8.50pm.
(British time)
How the fuck are there 1 dislike nevermind the 16 that are there at the time of me putting this?
HOW??
Gods
🤣 talent less jooos
Well now I want them both to take on trump
It would be freaking amazing
Petition anyone?
Michael Moore took TRUMP down....Fahrenheit 11/9 It is on NETFLIX
Yeah,Do a heavily edited 'hatchet job' on Trump containing as Many psycologically 'dirty tricks' as possible - BBC style... :( - They'd make Jesus Christ out to be a mass murderer... :( - Great If your a psycopath... :)
I far prefer Nick Broomfield, than the nepotistic Louis Theroux, who family are steeped in filmmaking. It was much easier to break into filmmaking for Louis than most.
It's really fucking off-putting having that stage-hand in the background trying to give directions whilst Louis and Nick are talking!!
She's not giving directions, she is doing hand language for deaf people.
It’s a sign language interpreter dimb wit
Stupidity at its finest smh
Hello mr. Broomfield - the british have mastered covering american issues- for us its like looking in the mirror.
For us in the UK it's a fucking nightmare.
also the interpreter is nice ;)
I cant concentrate with that lady doing sign language in the background.
Robin Mario burst your ear drums and learn sign language. Problem solved.
Hey before you do burst your eardrums think of the people who can't hear and don't be so heartless you can't concentrate
I agree.
James Greene how does that make me heartless?
Robin Mario Robin thanks for asking me that question in a polite way for that you have my respect the reason I said you were heartless was cause if that woman that is doing the sign language a lot of people around the world my son included wouldn't have any idea what they are talking about that's why I said you were heartless so Robin that's why I said that if you want to have a go at me that's up to you but I honestly hope you don't it's my guess that you are alright and probably just didn't think about what you said deafness is a horrible disability Trust me I know to well I have watched my beautiful son have to live with it all his life complete silence thanks and take care Robin 🇮🇪
ACTORS.
Two rats
OMG Take on Trump now! #visonary
Nick is talented but he’s so dry, not much of a personality lol 😂
Nick Broomfield seems to have some very stupid political opinions, but he does make great films.
Well he is a jew🤣
Nic and Louis are real media creeps.. they got the viewers or most by the balls.. but do and say very little just claim awards put up by their bosses... And most dont even notice they are telling you stuff you already know.
Jewishness is their main identity, something they don't advertise.
Homophobe
Lol seeing as neither of them are jewish... what exactly is 'jewishness'? They have both said many times that are atheists. I was brought up a catholic and went to a catholic school but I identify as being agnostic/atheist, haven't been to church un 15 years and think that christians are total hypocrites and the bible is nonsense... would you say I'm still a catholic?? If not then why do you say they are jewish? :/
there's a lot of bitterness and anti-antisemitism going on from you mighty keyboard warriors
Jews aren't just a religion. They still consider themselves Jews even when they aren't observant or don't believe in God. There's a type of Jew who views the Jewish people as God. Theroux and Broomfield are classic crypto-Jews. If you observe Jews enough it's easy to spot them.
As you get older you'll agree with me.
